Travel Itinerary

Highlights you can experience

Destination 1 & 3: Nairobi

Due to its central location, Nairobi is an excellent starting point for many safaris in Kenya. Numerous game reserves, national parks and conservancies are only a few hours drive from this city of 3 million. Those looking to add some city flair to their trip can hardly do better. You are spoilt for choice in this wonderful, vibrant metropolis. The National Museum is one such highlight. Its most notable exhibition may be a collection of early human fossils - considered among the most important collections in the world. Another unique highlight of Nairobi is the Bomas of Kenya - a tourist village, showcasing traditional Kenyan villages from numerous regional ethnic groups. This is a great destination for gaining some insight into the cultures and ethnic groups of Kenya - often overlooked by tourists heading straight to their safari.

Destination 2: Amboseli National Park

One of Kenya’s most popular parks, Amboseli National Park features spectacular landscapes, most notably offering the superb views Mt. Kilimanjaro, a unique, equatorial, snow-capped mountain which will loom in the background of many of your photos! There are several different habitats within the park, which feature different wildlife, from dry lake beds to wetlands and savannah. The park is well-known for its large herd of elephants and is often referred to as the “home of the African Elephant”. During a safari in the park, you’ll see the park’s famous elephants herds as well as the Big 5 safari animals, hippos, pelicans and much more. Wonderful opportunities to meet the Masai people abound here and is a highlight of any trip.

Destination 4: Masai Mara

Kenya’s most popular game reserve, the Masai Mara has recorded over 95 species of mammals, including the Big 5, as well as over 570 species of birds. The Masai Mara is perhaps best known for being part of the Great Migration route. Every year nearly 2 million animals (mostly Wildebeests but also zebras, Thomson’s Gazelle and others) make the migration from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara (and back again). This sheer number of animals attracts many predators as well - stalking the pack along with their migration route (lions) or waiting for them to come to them as they cross rivers (crocodiles). Surely some of the most exciting animal encounters you’ll see will occur in the Masai Mara!

Destination 5: Lake Elmenteita

Lake Elmenteita is a soda lake, which is a lake high in alkaline (salt) and attracts numerous flamingos and other birds who feed on the algae and bacteria produced in the lake. The lake offers some of the best bird watching opportunities in Kenya but is also home to animals such as zebras, warthogs and the rare Rothschild giraffe. Walking along the lakeshore or even going on horeseback allows visitors the best chance for viewing the animals and birds (the lake is extremely shallow) as well as experiencing the volcanic history of the region by walking along its ancient lava flows and craters.

Destination 6: Lake Baringo National Park

The Lake Baringo National Park is home to Lake Baringo a freshwater lake that attracts huge numbers of birds to the area. Nearly 500 bird species have been recorded around the lake - in fact, hundreds have been recorded in a single day - bird-watchers may never want to leave! The lake is well stocked with fish as well as hippos and crocodiles. Boat trips are available for amateur ornithologists as well we those looking to get a closer look at the marine life here. Nearby Lake Borgia offers a unique experience in Kenya as it is situated in a geothermal region. The has created a wonderland of hot springs and geysers throughout the area.

Destination 7: Aberdare

Aberdare National Park welcomes visitors with wonderful lush, green landscapes - often a nice change from the arid landscapes you often come across on many Kenyan safaris. The park features a variety of wildlife, including forest elephants, black rhinos, leopards, hyenas, colobus monkeys, buffaloes and warthogs. A little harder to find here are the smaller cats, such as the African wild cat, golden cat and more - a unique treat to see if you find them! With over 250 different bird species, Aberdare National Park is also a wonderful destination for bird-watchers. With relatively low numbers of predators in the park, a nice feature is the ability to have picnics, go on wildlife walks and camp within the park. A natural highlight of the park is the Karuru waterfall, whose water plunges down in 3 “steps”, totalling nearly 900 feet!

Destination 8: Samburu National Reserve

The spectacular Kenyan landscape in this reserve is spread over more than 60 square miles and features rugged hills, dense scrubland and rich wildlife. A huge attraction at the park (both in numbers and size) are the 900 plus elephants that call this region home. Furthermore, many distinct species can be found here, such as the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich and Beisa Oryx. You will also be able to see the Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) here as well. Rather uniquely, a local lion has adopted a baby oryx and with some luck, you could see them during your visit! Bird lovers will also be entranced here, as there are over 450 different bird species to be discovered within the reserve.
