Travel Itinerary

Highlights you can experience

Destination 1: Windhoek

The journey begins at the capital of Namibia, Windhoek. A vibrant, multicultural city, Windhoek manages to merge African and European cultures rather well. The country’s cultural hub, Windhoek offers wonderful opportunities to learn more about the country’s unique history. Visit Katutura, originally a segregated township, now bustling with life and offering insight into African culture. Educate yourself in one of the many museums in the city, such as the Railway or Natural Earth Science Museum. Take yourself to the city outskirts to see Heroes’ Acre, a giant monument dedicated to those who fought for an independent Namibia. You can even encounter wildlife at The Okapuka Game Ranch or Naankuse lodge, a short distance from town, where you’ll see giraffes, white rhinos and various carnivores while letting you get back to your accommodation before dinner.

Destination 2: Fish River Canyon

Nowhere else in the world is quite like The Fish River Canyon. The world’s second largest canyon and part of the Ais-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, Fish River Canyon is an amazing geologic feature of Namibia. For shorter stays, there are excellent viewpoints around the canyon that should be visited, the most popular is found at Hell’s Bend. Travellers with more time will want to get down and maybe a little dirty on a multi-day hike through the canyon. Entering the canyon is only available to those you have registered for a hike. These hikes can range from 2 to 5 days and are only available between April and September due to winter’s milder climate. Guided 4x4 canyon and wildebeest drives are also excellent opportunities to explore the area.

Destination 3: Aus

Aus is a small desert town tucked into the hills just on the outskirts of the Namib desert and a great base to explore this unique region. The congruence of three geographic regions (granite mountains, plains and riverbeds) make the area a beautiful destination - best explored on foot or mountain bike. For animal lovers, a unique highlight is the wild desert horses that call the area home. The only desert-dwelling horses in the world can be found bear Aus. Where they came from originally is a bit of a mystery but be sure to visit the Garub waterhole for the best chance of seeing these distinct animals. A prisoner of war camp also called Aus home after World War One. The camp, as well as a graveyard for fallen soldiers, are historical highlights that can be visited.

Destination 4: Naukluft Mountains

The Naukluft Mountains are a beautiful and often overlooked geological formation in Namibia. Very popular for its abundance of hiking and 4x4 trails, the area is an outdoor playground for more adventurous travellers. Hikes here range from just a few hours to up to 8 days. Freshwater springs and pools abound in this mountainous area due to underground reservoirs that seep out of the dolomite and limestone rocks. The rivers and pools attract not only human travellers but also a large amount of wildlife. Various animals that can be observed here include zebra, antelope and even leopard. Guided bird walks are also a rewarding endeavour when visiting the area with over 100 species calling the region home. A little further afield a trip to the giant sand dunes at Sossusvlei can be experienced as well as even a wine tour at a nearby farm.
