São Miguel

São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores, is known for its lush landscapes, crater lakes, and natural hot springs. Outdoor enthusiasts will find countless hiking trails, while natural pools, thermal baths, and the Atlantic Ocean invite visitors to take a refreshing dip. In the capital city of Ponta Delgada, stroll along the waterfront promenade, explore charming alleyways, and browse local boutiques. Don't miss a visit to Europe’s only tea plantation and the island’s unique pineapple farms, where the tropical fruit is grown in greenhouses.More...

Faial

Known as the "Blue Island" for its abundance of summer-blooming hydrangeas, Faial offers both natural beauty and maritime charm. The harbor town of Horta is a favorite stop for international sailors and offers a laid-back atmosphere. On the island’s western tip, the Capelinhos volcano, which erupted in 1957, created a lunar-like landscape now featuring hiking trails, a visitor center, and a lighthouse. In the island’s center lies the Faial Caldeira, a protected nature reserve offering scenic hikes and opportunities to observe local wildlife.

Pico

Pico Island is dominated by its namesake volcano, standing 7,713 feet tall — the highest peak in Portugal. In addition to climbing Pico, visitors can explore the island’s historic lava vineyards, established in the 15th century. The unique volcanic soil produces rich, full-bodied wines that have earned UNESCO World Heritage status. Pico is also one of the best spots in the Azores for whale watching, with over 20 species of whales and dolphins frequently spotted in the surrounding waters.Less

Practical information for your trip

The best time to visit the Azores is between June and October. During this time, the archipelago boasts optimal weather conditions and pleasant temperatures, which are ideal for hiking, swimming and active vacations.

The Azores archipelago with its nine islands lies in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between Europe and North America.

Each of the nine islands has its own advantages. São Miguel, the main island, offers the lively capital Ponta Delgada and many opportunities for city strolls and activities. The island of Faial, including the town of Horta, is a meeting point for the yachting scene. Flores and Santa Maria are rather quiet islands with secluded nature.

An ideal duration for a trip to the Azores would be around 10 to 14 days. This gives you enough time to explore the breathtaking nature, the volcanic landscapes, the unique wildlife and the relaxed atmosphere of the islands. You can go on hikes, go whale watching and enjoy the local specialties without rushing.

The official language in the Azores is Portuguese, although the language is spoken in very different dialects.

US travelers do not need a visa to visit the Azores for stays up to 90 days. A valid passport is required for entry.

No special vaccinations are required to visit the Azores. Routine vaccinations should be up to date, and travelers may consider vaccinations for hepatitis A and B depending on personal health circumstances and travel plans. Always consult your healthcare provider before traveling.

The Azores combine beach vacations, hikes and city strolls. Pack appropriate clothing for all program points, including hiking boots, sun protection and light jackets.
