The wonderful cities of Bilbao and San Sebastián are at the top of the classic program of a Basque Country trip. Bilbao is now considered one of Europe's most important centers of art and culture. San Sebastián, with its beautiful bay surrounded by green hills, has been one of the most popular destinations for a beach vacation among Spaniards since the 19th century. What both towns have in common is the beautiful old town feel, where you can enjoy traditional pinxos in the bars. Many smaller towns in the region, such as Vitorio-Gasteiz or Balmaseda, are well worth a visit, while nature lovers should also take a trip to the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.

A highlight of any Basque Country trip, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a masterpiece of modern architecture. Designed by Frank Gehry in the 1990s, its flowing, reflective titanium curves have made it one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary buildings. Inside, you’ll find an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, making it a must-visit for art lovers.
Bilbao’s historic old town, known as Casco Viejo, dates back to the Middle Ages and features seven narrow streets full of local charm. Explore traditional pintxos bars, browse unique shops, and visit the Mercado de la Ribera — Europe’s largest covered market. Don’t miss the 600-year-old Santiago Cathedral, a stunning example of Gothic architecture.
San Sebastián’s Parte Vieja, or Old Town, offers a captivating blend of medieval charm and vibrant culture. Stroll through its winding alleys to discover the Plaza Mayor, bustling pintxos bars, the lively fish market, and historic landmarks like San Vicente Church and the Basilica of Santa Maria. It’s the perfect place to experience the city’s culinary and cultural heritage.
Framing San Sebastián’s picturesque bay, Monte Igueldo offers one of the best panoramic views of the city and coastline. Ride the vintage funicular to the summit, where you’ll find a nostalgic amusement park and the historic El Torreón lighthouse, which features exhibits on Basque maritime life. The views from the top are simply breathtaking.
Playa de la Concha is San Sebastián’s most famous beach, beloved since the 19th century when Spanish aristocrats first visited its shores. Today, its calm, clear waters and scenic backdrop of rolling green hills make it a favorite spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing by the sea.
There are several airports in the Basque Country. The most important ones in the region are Bilbao Airport (BIO), San Sebastián Airport (EAS) and Vitoria Airport (VIT).
If you want to visit the Basque Country to enjoy the beaches and the sea, the best time is from June to September. However, if you want to experience the Basque culture and landscape, the months from April to June and September to November are ideal.
