Albufeira in Portugal is a classic among the Algarve's seaside resorts. Beaches such as Praia de Falésia, Praia Sao Rafael and Praia da Galé promise unforgettable vacation experiences with their golden sand, bright blue water and fascinating rock formations, caves and grottos. Albufeira is considered a party stronghold, but away from the big clubs, a different side awaits you in the old town - there is nightlife here too, but it is much quieter and more family-friendly. Take a stroll through the narrow, Moorish-influenced streets. The Museu Municipal de Arquelogia provides information about the history of Albufeira in Roman and Moorish times.

Rocky orange cliffs

White houses and narrow alleyways

Caves and golden sand
The striking orange cliffs rise above Praia da Falésia, which stretches for about 5 miles. As part of a protected nature park, the beach has preserved its natural charm. It is divided into three sections: the scenic area of Olhos de Água, where you’ll find the “Miradouro de Falésia” viewpoint with breathtaking views; the quiet and exclusive eastern end in Vilamoura; and the central Acoteias section, ideal for a relaxed day of swimming.
Praia Sao Rafael is one of the most popular beaches in Albufeira. Between fascinating rock formations, you can swim, snorkel and kayak in the calm waters, or simply relax on the golden sand. Take a walk to the surrounding caves and grottos or enjoy a delicious meal in one of the beach restaurants.
The gently sloping Praia da Galé with its unspoiled landscape is located just outside the tourist centers. The most interesting part of the beach is its eastern side, where there are many caves and grottos that are great fun to explore. Otherwise, you can of course also enjoy classic beach activities such as sunbathing, swimming or water sports.
With its whitewashed houses and narrow alleyways, Albufeira’s old town is one of the most charming spots in the Algarve. Soak up the lively atmosphere in the bars and restaurants—many with stunning views of Praia dos Pescadores and the sea—and explore landmarks like the Igreja de Sant’Ana and the Igreja Matriz de Albufeira, which features a 92-foot bell tower.
The Museu Municipal de Arquelogia in the former town hall building takes you back to Albufeira's past. The archaeological museum revolves around the period between prehistory and the Middle Ages, with a focus on the Roman and Moorish eras. For example, there are some finds from a Roman villa on display here. Informative audio guides are also available in various languages.
You can reach Albufeira from the U.S. by flying from New York (JFK) to Faro Airport (FAO), usually with one stop in Lisbon. From Faro, it’s about a 40-minute drive to Albufeira by rental car. Alternatively, you can take a shuttle bus from the airport or a train from Faro to Albufeira, both of which take around an hour.
Albufeira has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. For sun worshippers, the best time to visit Albufeira is between June and August.
