The Ria Formosa boat tour from Faro is one of the most distinct natural experiences in southern Portugal, and it's consistently the one clients say they almost skipped, but didn't. Schedule it on the first Faro morning and leave the afternoon free for the walled old town and the bone chapel at the Igreja do Carmo. The Lake Como excursion from Milan works best with a Bellagio arrival by ferry from Varenna rather than from Como town; the approach by water shows the lakefront gardens of Villa Melzi stepping directly to the shore in a way the road version misses entirely. For Lisbon, build the Sintra day trip on day two rather than day one: a walking morning in Alfama and Belém on arrival anchors the city properly before the palace and cliffside context of Sintra fully makes sense.

Day 1 - 2
The beautiful city of Lisbon lies draped across a string of seven hills on the western Iberian Peninsula and is the westernmost and oldest city in western Europe. Its long and tumultuous history has resulted in an aesthetic characterised by a haphazard combination of old and new; however, the aesthetic chaos of Lisbon only adds to its appeal and its undeniable charm. Bright yellow centenarian trams rattle their way up steep, tree-lined, cobbled streets; ornate ironwork balconies overrun with bougainvillaea sit above elegant outdoor cafes housed in ancient whitewashed, red-roofed stone houses; and a flurry of detailed mosaics decorate the sidewalks. Ancient statues adorn grand squares and hidden gardens. A diverse culinary scene, a plethora of fascinating museums, and numerous castles make it easy to see why Lisbon is one of Europe’s most misunderstood and underrated cities.

Discover the charming town of Sintra, where the royal family once had their summer residence, with an experienced guide. Enjoy typical local pastries and immerse yourself in the historic atmosphere of this unique region.
The tour continues to the spectacular Cabo da Roca viewpoint, the westernmost point of Europe, and the impressive Boca do Inferno rock cliff. Afterward, explore the sophisticated town of Cascais and the elegant gardens surrounding the famous Estoril Casino.
An unforgettable trip along Portugal's most beautiful coastal towns – rich in nature, culture, and history.
Highlights
Day 3 - 4
Set on Portugal’s coast in the southern Algarve region, the once-sleepy fishing village of Albufeira has evolved into one of the area’s most alluring and vibrant holiday destinations, thanks to its outstanding beaches and dramatic scenery and lively social scene. There are over 20 beaches to choose from in Albufeira, including the main beach’s vast, crescent-shaped expanse of fine, pink-gold sand fringing a turquoise bay and sheltered by rugged cliffs. The streets of the old town behind it are frequented by street performers and scattered liberally with shops, bars and restaurants. On the glittering Albufeira strip, you will find some of Portugal’s wildest nightlife venues, including the renowned Kiss club, which usually opens after midnight and pulsates till after dawn.

Day 5 - 6
The Algarve’s southernmost city, Faro, has an elegant marina backed by a historical quarter dotted with white-washed Portuguese buildings, stately Catholic churches and age-old Moorish architecture. Its atmospheric squares and boulevards are paved with white and grey stone and lined with boutiques, designer stores, cafes and bars. There is no shortage of entertainment in this university town - it has a lively nightlife and a thriving arts and culture scene that caters to a wide array of audiences. There is plenty of opportunity for swimming and sunbathing on the area’s golden coast, and nature lovers will be in their element in the nearby Ria Formosa Reserve, with its incredibly biodiverse lagoon and coastal zone.

Day 7 - 8
The vibrant metropolis of Milan is the capital of Italy’s Lombardy region in northern Italy. Always at the forefront of international fashion, Milan’s sleek, glamorous facade has earned it a reputation for superficiality and excessive consumerism. However, beneath the surface lies a treasure trove of historical and architectural wonders—from its magnificent Gothic churches, Baroque mansions, and Art Nouveau palazzos to the striking modern skyscrapers of the Porta Nuova financial district. Must-see landmarks include the spectacular Milan Cathedral (Duomo), the glass-vaulted Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and of course, La Scala—one of the world’s most renowned opera houses. Milan offers something for everyone: those in search of high-end designer shopping will be more than satisfied, as will visitors interested in fascinating historical sites and extraordinary architectural achievements.

Day 9 - 11
Venice is a small, unique city in Italy’s Veneto region, a historic center made up of 118 small islands in a lagoon of the Adriatic Sea, connected by a complex network of canals and footbridges. The stately palaces and ancient churches remain as fascinating reminders of what was once a major trading hub between Europe and the Orient. From the famous Gothic Doge’s Palace and the breathtaking St. Mark’s Basilica to the awe-inspiring brilliance of Titian’s Assumption altarpiece lighting up an entire cathedral, Venice has remained virtually unchanged for the past 600 years. Other must-see attractions include the Bridge of Sighs, the spectacular Peggy Guggenheim Collection (art gallery), the captivating Gallerie dell’Accademia (museum), and of course, gondola rides along the canals.

Portugal's Atlantic coast followed by northern Italy's lakes and canals — the contrast between the two halves is the experience, not just the geography. Faro's quiet lagoon, Albufeira's golden cliffs, and the laid-back southern Portuguese pace make the arrival in Milan feel like a shift into a different world, and Venice, arriving last, closes the trip on a note of architectural improbability that nothing else in Europe quite matches.
What I appreciate most about the Faro section is the Ria Formosa. Most Algarve visitors stay on the ocean side of the barrier islands, but the lagoon behind them — shallow, warm, and full of wading birds — is a completely different environment. The boat trip to the nearby islands earns an afternoon and changes how the southern coast reads.
Hotel: Hotel Convento do Salvador
Two nights with the Sintra, Cabo da Roca, and Cascais day trip filling one full day and the Alfama and Belém neighborhoods the other. The Hotel Convento do Salvador is a converted convent in Alfama — an address with genuine architectural character that rewards an unhurried evening in its courtyard.
Hotel: Rocamar Exclusive Hotel & Spa
The Algarve's western cliff scenery — Praia da Marinha, the sea caves south of Carvoeiro — is the most dramatic stretch of coastline in Portugal and rewards a half-day drive. The Rocamar sits away from the main strip, which makes the base considerably more pleasant than the busier hotel zone.
Hotel: Opus One Luxury Guest House & Wine
Faro's old town is compact and consistently undervisited — the cathedral, the city walls, and the marina are all within a short walk, and the ambience is entirely different from the resort coast further west. The Ria Formosa boat excursion to the nearby islands fills an afternoon with something genuinely distinctive.
Hotel: NH Collection Milano President
The Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II on one day, the Lake Como excursion filling the other completely. Arriving in Bellagio by ferry in the early afternoon and staying until the day-trippers have left gives you the lake in its best light — the late afternoon on the water, with the mountains above and the reflections below, earns every bit of the drive north.
Hotel: Ca' dei Proverbi Suites
The Ca' dei Proverbi is an apartment-style property in a residential part of Venice, which gives daily life a different quality from staying near San Marco. St. Mark's Square, the canals, and the historic districts fill the first day; the second belongs to the alleyways and bridges of Dorsoduro and Castello, which most visitors never reach. Venice is best seen from both.
Spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) offer the best balance of mild weather and fewer crowds. You’ll enjoy sunny beaches in Albufeira, cultural walks in Lisbon, and pleasant conditions for exploring Milan and Venice.
Hotels range $90–$150 per night for mid-range and $180–$250+ for boutique stays. Meals cost $15–$25 in traditional restaurants and $50–$90 in fine dining. Entrance fees include Pena Palace (~$15), Milan Cathedral (~$15), and Venice gondola rides (~$80). A 10-day multi-country trip typically starts around $2,000 per person.
Lisbon offers Alfama, Belém, and a Sintra day trip. The Algarve features Albufeira’s beaches and Faro’s old town. Milan showcases Gothic architecture and luxury shopping, while Lake Como adds alpine scenery. Venice rounds out the trip with canals, St. Mark’s Square, and gondola rides.

Outstanding travel company—would book again anytime

Very friendly and knowledgeable advisor
Top travel company—we’d book again anytime. My travel consultant was very friendly: I shared what we had in mind, and she planned the trip for us. She was also able to make adjustments when something didn’t quite fit—everything went perfectly. Afterwards, customer service took care of us and was quick to help. The trip itself was a dream. It’s also worth mentioning that we had a local guide we could message with any questions. Excellent support, and the Tourlane app was perfect—everything we needed right at hand on our phone. Many thanks to everyone who supported us on this trip.
She listened carefully to all my wishes and ideas, gave me excellent advice, and made everything happen. All my questions were answered, and I feel very well taken care of. Thank you so much!
