The fado experience in Porto is worth booking at a small house in Miragaia rather than a tourist-facing restaurant near the waterfront, and it's the recommendation I make without exception. The acoustic intimacy and the proximity to the performers are categorically different from a stage setup, and Porto's melancholic tradition has a rawer, less theatrical quality than Lisbon's Chiado circuit. For the Sintra day trip from Lisbon, Pena Palace before 9am means the polychrome facade and the terraced gardens before the coach wave from the capital arrives; the forest approach and the Cruz Alta viewpoint above the palace in that first hour are the version the afternoon itinerary can't deliver. For the Douro Valley excursion, take the south bank N108 road through Peso da Régua to Pinhão rather than the motorway: the terraced vineyard panorama unrolls continuously for thirty kilometers in a way the faster route simply bypasses.

Day 1 - 4
The beautiful city of Lisbon lies draped across a string of seven hills on the western Iberian Peninsula and is the westernmost and oldest city in western Europe. Its long and tumultuous history has resulted in an aesthetic characterised by a haphazard combination of old and new; however, the aesthetic chaos of Lisbon only adds to its appeal and its undeniable charm. Bright yellow centenarian trams rattle their way up steep, tree-lined, cobbled streets; ornate ironwork balconies overrun with bougainvillaea sit above elegant outdoor cafes housed in ancient whitewashed, red-roofed stone houses; and a flurry of detailed mosaics decorate the sidewalks. Ancient statues adorn grand squares and hidden gardens. A diverse culinary scene, a plethora of fascinating museums, and numerous castles make it easy to see why Lisbon is one of Europe’s most misunderstood and underrated cities.

The Hop-on Hop-off 48-hour river cruise offers a flexible way to discover the city from the water. You can hop on and off at various stops and explore the sights at your own pace. Ideal for anyone who wants to experience a relaxed and varied tour.
Day 5 - 7
Located in northern Portugal along the Douro River estuary, the old sailing port of Porto is a World Heritage Site and the second-largest city in the country. While retaining the timeless charm of a small town, Porto also has many of the modern advantages of a metropolis. Browse the expansive art collection at the Soares dos Reis National Museum, view the ornate interior of the Church of Sao Francisco, and explore the medieval maze of stairways and terraces in the old quarter of Ribeira. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Vila Nova de Gaia area to sample some of Porto’s famous Port wine. Other popular attractions include the 12th-century Porto Cathedral, Clerigos Tower and the Harry-Potteresque Livraria Lello bookshop, showcasing some magnificent neo-gothic architecture.

Experience the melancholic sounds of traditional fado in an atmospheric venue in the heart of Porto. Let yourself be enchanted by the emotional music and enjoy a selection of exquisite Portuguese wines at an exclusive wine tasting. A perfect combination of culture and enjoyment!

Four nights in Lisbon and two in Porto — the allocation gives Lisbon room to include both the city and the Sintra, Cabo da Roca, and Cascais day trip without compressing either, and two nights in Porto covers the Ribeira district, the Douro River cruise, and the port wine cellars at a proper pace. The fado experience in Porto is a worthwhile addition that most visitors to the city miss — it is less well-known than Lisbon's fado tradition, but the venues in the Ribeira and the Foz neighborhood are genuinely good.
One tip I always pass along about the Douro River cruise from Porto: the six bridges tour from the waterfront at Cais da Ribeira gives you the full relationship between Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, and the river in an hour. It is the right introduction to the city before the lodge cellar visits, not a separate afternoon activity.
Hotel: Portugal Boutique City Hotel
Four nights with the Alfama and Belém exploration, the hop-on hop-off river cruise, the Sintra, Cabo da Roca, and Cascais day trip, and the fado in Chiado experience. The fado in the Chiado is best booked before you travel — the intimate Alfama houses fill up on weekends, and the performance lands differently when you've walked the neighborhood during the day.
Hotel: NEYA Porto
Two nights with the Ribeira district, the Douro River cruise, the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, and the fado experience. The lodge cellars across the Dom Luís I Bridge are best visited in the afternoon when they're cooler and less crowded. The NEYA's proximity to the Ribeira makes the evenings on the waterfront straightforward and uncomplicated.
The best time to travel to Lisbon and Porto for a city break is during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. From April to June and September to October, you can enjoy pleasant temperatures and sunny days, perfect for exploring both cities without the intense heat and crowds of the peak summer months.
The average cost for a week-long trip to Portugal, excluding flights, is about $1,000 per person. A mid-range budget of around $140 per day covers a stay in a 4-star hotel and popular activities. A budget-friendly trip starts at approximately $55 per day, covering a simple hotel and public transportation.
A trip to Lisbon and Porto is a mix of culture, history, and vibrant city life. Highlights include a ride on Lisbon's historic streetcars and a visit to the medieval Ribeira district in Porto. For activities, you can take a culinary walk in Lisbon or a 6-bridge river cruise on the Douro River in Porto.

Outstanding travel company—would book again anytime

Very friendly and knowledgeable advisor
Top travel company—we’d book again anytime. My travel consultant was very friendly: I shared what we had in mind, and she planned the trip for us. She was also able to make adjustments when something didn’t quite fit—everything went perfectly. Afterwards, customer service took care of us and was quick to help. The trip itself was a dream. It’s also worth mentioning that we had a local guide we could message with any questions. Excellent support, and the Tourlane app was perfect—everything we needed right at hand on our phone. Many thanks to everyone who supported us on this trip.
She listened carefully to all my wishes and ideas, gave me excellent advice, and made everything happen. All my questions were answered, and I feel very well taken care of. Thank you so much!
