The Joanine Library in Coimbra is what makes this itinerary worth the detour: gilded baroque interior, bat colony, timed entry that books out early. Book it before anything else. For fado in Porto, go to Miragaia rather than the tourist-facing waterfront houses; the music is rawer, the venues smaller, and the connection to the city's working character is actually audible. On the Sintra day: Pena Palace before 9am, Quinta da Regaleira in the late afternoon when the initiatic wells and tunnel garden are atmospheric rather than crowded. Together they cover the full range without fighting for the same hour.

Day 1 - 2
The beautiful city of Lisbon lies draped across a string of seven hills on the western Iberian Peninsula and is the westernmost and oldest city in western Europe. Its long and tumultuous history has resulted in an aesthetic characterised by a haphazard combination of old and new; however, the aesthetic chaos of Lisbon only adds to its appeal and its undeniable charm. Bright yellow centenarian trams rattle their way up steep, tree-lined, cobbled streets; ornate ironwork balconies overrun with bougainvillaea sit above elegant outdoor cafes housed in ancient whitewashed, red-roofed stone houses; and a flurry of detailed mosaics decorate the sidewalks. Ancient statues adorn grand squares and hidden gardens. A diverse culinary scene, a plethora of fascinating museums, and numerous castles make it easy to see why Lisbon is one of Europe’s most misunderstood and underrated cities.

Day 3 - 4
Located in northern Portugal along the Douro River estuary, the old sailing port of Porto is a World Heritage Site and the second-largest city in the country. While retaining the timeless charm of a small town, Porto also has many of the modern advantages of a metropolis. Browse the expansive art collection at the Soares dos Reis National Museum, view the ornate interior of the Church of Sao Francisco, and explore the medieval maze of stairways and terraces in the old quarter of Ribeira. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Vila Nova de Gaia area to sample some of Porto’s famous Port wine. Other popular attractions include the 12th-century Porto Cathedral, Clerigos Tower and the Harry-Potteresque Livraria Lello bookshop, showcasing some magnificent neo-gothic architecture.

Experience the melancholic sounds of traditional fado in an atmospheric venue in the heart of Porto. Let yourself be enchanted by the emotional music and enjoy a selection of exquisite Portuguese wines at an exclusive wine tasting. A perfect combination of culture and enjoyment!
Day 5
Set roughly halfway between Lisbon and Porto, Coimbra is a vibrant, historical university town that flanks both sides of the Mondego River, with the old quarter on one side and the modern district on the other. A walk down the ancient town’s main street will take you past shops and cafes, culminating in an atmospheric plaza. The square is crowned by the 12th-century Santa Cruz Monastery, a majestic building of ivory-coloured stone with an elaborate arched entrance and an exquisitely detailed interior decorated with blue tiles. The University of Coimbra, dating to 1537, is Europe’s oldest university and the town’s main architectural attraction, while the Quinta das Lagrimas estate, with its forests, bamboo groves, poppy fields, and manicured gardens, provides a tranquil oasis just outside the city.

Day 6 - 7
The beautiful city of Lisbon lies draped across a string of seven hills on the western Iberian Peninsula and is the westernmost and oldest city in western Europe. Its long and tumultuous history has resulted in an aesthetic characterised by a haphazard combination of old and new; however, the aesthetic chaos of Lisbon only adds to its appeal and its undeniable charm. Ancient statues adorn grand squares and hidden gardens. A diverse culinary scene, a plethora of fascinating museums, and numerous castles make it easy to see why Lisbon is one of Europe’s most misunderstood and underrated cities.

Fado In Chiado offers an atmospheric 50-minute fado show in the heart of Lisbon. A female and a male voice perform stirring fado pieces, accompanied by traditional Portuguese and acoustic guitar. The performance impressively conveys the melancholic soul of Portugal in an authentic atmosphere. A cultural experience that music lovers should not miss.

What sets this week apart from most one-week Portugal trips is the inclusion of Coimbra between Porto and Lisbon. Most travelers move directly between the two main cities, and that single night in Portugal's historic university town adds genuine depth without adding any complexity to the overall journey.
A detail a lot of travelers miss about the Douro Valley day from Porto: the scale of the valley reads far better from a miradouro than from river level alone. Ask your driver to stop at the Casal de Loivos viewpoint on the way up — it reframes everything you see in the valley below.
Hotel: Portugal Boutique City Hotel
Two nights allows for a focused city day across Alfama, Belém, and the viewpoints, followed by a full day out at Sintra, Cabo da Roca, and Cascais. The Portugal Boutique City Hotel is a comfortable central base that keeps both days easy to organize.
Hotel: NEYA Porto
The Six Bridges boat trip on the Douro gives you a clear sense of how Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia relate to each other before you explore on foot. The port wine tasting in a lodge cellar is best done in the afternoon when the cellars are cooler — a short walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge from the NEYA.
Hotel: Sapientia Boutique Hotel
The train from Porto to Coimbra takes about an hour, and the old town is walkable from the station. The University of Coimbra's Joanina Library is one of the most remarkable baroque interiors in Portugal — timed entry is required and capacity is limited, so securing a spot in advance is worth the effort. The Sapientia Boutique is a well-chosen stay in the historic upper town, close to the main university buildings.
Hotel: Portugal Boutique City Hotel
A final night back in Lisbon before departure. The evening is best spent in a neighborhood you haven't had time for yet — Príncipe Real or Mouraria both offer a quieter, less-visited side of the capital that rewards an unhurried final dinner.
The best time to visit Portugal is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April–June) and fall (September–October). These seasons offer a perfect balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds, making it ideal for exploring cities like Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra.
On average, a week-long trip to Portugal, excluding flights, starts at about $1,000 per person. This mid-range budget is a good estimate, covering a stay in a 4-star hotel and popular activities. A budget-friendly trip starts at approximately $55 per day.
A trip to Portugal is a blend of history, culture, and coastal charm. Highlights include a ride on Lisbon's historic streetcars, a visit to the UNESCO-listed University of Coimbra, and a boat trip on the Douro River in Porto. For activities, you can go on a culinary walk in Lisbon or a kayak tour on the Mondego River.

Outstanding travel company—would book again anytime

Very friendly and knowledgeable advisor
Top travel company—we’d book again anytime. My travel consultant was very friendly: I shared what we had in mind, and she planned the trip for us. She was also able to make adjustments when something didn’t quite fit—everything went perfectly. Afterwards, customer service took care of us and was quick to help. The trip itself was a dream. It’s also worth mentioning that we had a local guide we could message with any questions. Excellent support, and the Tourlane app was perfect—everything we needed right at hand on our phone. Many thanks to everyone who supported us on this trip.
She listened carefully to all my wishes and ideas, gave me excellent advice, and made everything happen. All my questions were answered, and I feel very well taken care of. Thank you so much!
