Coimbra is best known as the home of Portugal's oldest university, which is also one of the city's main attractions with its impressive library. Moorish fortifications and Gothic churches such as the Igreja de Santa Cruz also contribute to Coimbra's charm, while modern Coimbra is characterized by student life. Other great sights include the Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro with its impressive collection of historical art, the Portugal dos Pequenitos theme park, which presents Portugal in miniature, and the magnificent botanical gardens.

Opulent baroque architecture and rare works
Founded in 1290, the Universidade de Coimbra is Portugal's oldest university and has stood on its current site at the highest point of Coimbra since 1537. In the 18th century, a few special highlights were added to the building complex with the impressive tower, which you can also climb, and the beautifully decorated Biblioteca Joanina.
The Gothic monastery church Igreja de Santa Cruz is located in the heart of Coimbra. Its Manueline-style vaults were added in the 16th century. Inside, you’ll find striking blue azulejos and the tombs of Portugal’s first two kings, which rise more than 33 feet high. The intricate wood carvings and peaceful cloisters are also remarkable.
In the Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro, you can admire Portugal's largest collection of historical sculptures, paintings, textiles, jewelry, furniture and ceramics. You can also visit a vaulted passageway from Roman times beneath the building.
Portugal dos Pequenitos is Portugal in miniature. Here you can marvel at small models of some of Portugal's most iconic buildings and monuments, as well as the former overseas territories. This not only provides you with a unique backdrop for a walk, but also gives you an overview of the characteristic features of Portuguese architecture.
The University of Coimbra is home to Portugal’s oldest and largest botanical garden. Established in 1772, the 50-acre garden features more than 1,500 plant species from around the world, with charming fountains and ponds adding to its appeal.
The nearest airport is Porto Airport (OPO), located about 75 miles away. There are regular bus and train connections from Porto to Coimbra.
In general, the months from April to June and September to October are the best months to visit Coimbra, as the weather is mild and pleasant and the crowds are not as large as in the summer months.
