Our expert tips for your Cordoba tour

Córdoba is the historic city of the caliphs on the Guadalquivir River. Once the center of the Moorish Empire, it remains one of Spain’s most culturally rich destinations. Its greatest landmark is the Mezquita — a fascinating blend of mosque and cathedral architecture that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. As you explore the city, take time to wander through the Jewish Quarter, the Judería, and visit Córdoba’s iconic flower-filled patios. With Tourlane, you can plan every part of your trip in one place — flights, transfers, accommodations, and private guides. Our travel experts design a tailor-made itinerary built around your travel style and preferences.

What to see during your Cordoba tour?

1. Mezquita

The Mezquita, Córdoba’s world-famous mosque-cathedral, is one of Spain’s most extraordinary architectural sites. Originally built in the 8th century as a mosque under Moorish rule, it was converted into a Catholic cathedral after the Christian reconquest in 1236. Its forest of red-and-white arches, serene prayer halls, and later Christian additions create a striking blend of cultures. Since 1882 it has been a national monument, and since 1984, a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Córdoba’s Old Town and the nearby Medina Azahara.More...

2. Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos

This 14th-century fortress-palace, also a UNESCO site, was built in 1328 by King Alfonso XI on the foundations of an earlier caliph’s residence. The Alcázar served as a royal seat and later welcomed Christopher Columbus as he presented his plans for sailing west to reach India. Inside, you’ll find Roman mosaics, an ancient marble sarcophagus, and beautifully preserved Arab baths. The gardens — with pools, fountains, citrus trees, and sculpted hedges — are among the most peaceful in the city.

3. Puente Romano

Spanning the Guadalquivir with sixteen stone arches, the Roman Bridge leads directly into Córdoba’s Old Town. Likely built under Emperor Augustus around 45 BC, it formed part of the ancient Vía Augusta that connected Rome with Cádiz. Rebuilt and restored many times, the bridge remains a masterpiece of Roman and Moorish engineering. From the Calahorra Tower at the far end, enjoy some of the best panoramic views of the Mezquita — especially beautiful at sunset.

4. Judería

Córdoba’s Jewish Quarter, a UNESCO-listed district, stretches back to Roman times and flourished during the Moorish era. This maze of narrow alleys, whitewashed façades, and flower-lined patios reflects the city’s golden age of scholarship, trade, and cultural coexistence. Landmarks include the small 14th-century Synagogue, one of only three medieval synagogues left in Spain. A walk through the Judería is a journey through centuries of Andalusian history.

5. Viana Palace

The 15th-century Palacio de Viana is one of Córdoba’s most elegant noble homes. Best known for its twelve patios — each with its own style, fountains, tiles, and lush Mediterranean plants — the palace showcases Córdoba’s famous courtyard tradition. Built on Roman foundations and expanded over centuries, Viana is now owned by a cultural foundation and used for exhibitions. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in Andalusian architecture and garden design.

6. Medina Azahara

Just outside Córdoba lies Medina Azahara, the ruins of a grand 10th-century palace city built by the Caliph Abd al-Rahman III. Once a symbol of power in Al-Andalus, it featured palaces, gardens, ceremonial halls, and residential quarters. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site where visitors can explore archaeological remains and learn about Córdoba’s golden age.

7. Calleja de las Flores

One of Córdoba’s most photographed corners, Calleja de las Flores is a narrow alley lined with flower-filled balconies and framed by a perfect view of the Mezquita’s bell tower. It’s a charming stop for travelers looking to capture the essence of the Old Town.

8. Patios de Córdoba

Córdoba’s patios — the city’s iconic interior courtyards — are a defining feature of local culture. Many belong to private homes, but several are open year-round, and even more can be visited during the annual Patio Festival in May. Expect vibrant flowers, hand-painted tiles, and traditional Andalusian architecture.

9. Plaza de la Corredera

This large, rectangular square has a distinct Castilian style, making it unique in Andalusia. Once the site of markets and public events, today it’s a lively spot for cafés, terraces, and people-watching. It’s a welcoming place to enjoy a drink before continuing your exploration of the Old Town.

10. Torre de la Calahorra

Guarding the southern end of the Roman Bridge, the Calahorra Tower was originally built by the Moors and later expanded by Christian rulers. Today it houses a small museum about the city’s multicultural past. The rooftop terrace offers excellent views of the river and the Mezquita.Less
