Which sights to explore in San Sebastian?

1. Playa de la Concha

La Concha is one of San Sebastián’s iconic city beaches. Stretching nearly one and a half kilometers, it takes its name from its shell-shaped bay framed by Monte Igueldo and Monte Urgull. In the center sits the small Santa Clara Island. With its elegant promenade and close proximity to the Old Town, La Concha is perfect for a scenic stroll, a relaxing afternoon in the sun, or a refreshing swim in the Atlantic.More...

2. Plaza de la Constitución

Once the site of San Sebastián’s bullfighting arena, Plaza de la Constitución is now the lively heart of the Old Town. You can still see the arena’s numbered spectator boxes above the balconies. Today, cafés and restaurants line the square, making it a welcoming place to enjoy a coffee, a light snack, and the steady rhythm of local life.

3. La Parte Vieja

La Parte Vieja, the city’s Old Town, is San Sebastián at its most atmospheric. Much of it was rebuilt after the fire of 1813, creating a charming maze of narrow streets. Explore historic highlights like Plaza de la Constitución, the Church of San Vicente, and the Basilica of Santa María del Coro. In the evening, step into one of the many pintxo bars to try the Basque version of tapas.

4. Monte Igueldo

Monte Igueldo offers some of the best views in San Sebastián. You can hike up or take the historic funicular railway from 1912. From the top, enjoy sweeping panoramas of the city and La Concha Bay. There’s also a nostalgic amusement park, adding a unique vintage charm to the experience.

5. Urgull

Urgull, crowned by its 12.5-meter statue of Christ, rises right above the Old Town and harbor. The wooded hill is a favorite place for both visitors and locals. A walk to the summit rewards you with wide-ranging views of the city and the sea. A castle once stood here as early as the 12th century, reflecting the hill’s strategic importance.

6. Playa de Zurriola

Zurriola is San Sebastián’s surf beach. Unlike La Concha, it’s not sheltered by an island, which means consistently good waves. It’s a great place to watch local surfers, soak up the sun, or try surfing yourself — rental shops and surf schools are right on the beach.

7. Santa Clara Island

Located in the middle of La Concha Bay, this small green island is a beloved summer retreat. You can reach it by boat or, on very calm days at low tide, partly by foot. Enjoy a tiny beach, scenic viewpoints, and a lighthouse perched above the cliffs.

8. Miramar Palace

Built in the late 19th century for the Spanish royal family, Miramar Palace sits between La Concha and Ondarreta beaches. Its gardens offer peaceful seaside views and plenty of space to relax. It’s one of the most scenic walkways along the coast.

9. Ondarreta Beach

Neighboring La Concha, Ondarreta is a quieter stretch of sand ideal for swimming and sunbathing. It’s a favorite among families and locals, and it offers easy access to the promenade leading toward Monte Igueldo.

10. Peine del Viento (Wind Comb)

Located at the western end of Ondarreta Beach, this iconic sculpture by Eduardo Chillida blends art and nature. Three steel sculptures are anchored into the rocks where waves crash against the cliffs. It’s one of San Sebastián’s most striking viewpoints, especially at sunset.Less

Practical information for your trip

There are several airports in the Basque Country. The most important ones in the region are Bilbao Airport (BIO), San Sebastián Airport (EAS) and Vitoria Airport (VIT).

The best time to visit the Basque Country is between May and October, when the weather is warm and dry. This season is perfect for exploring coastal cities like San Sebastian and Bilbao and enjoying cultural highlights without the colder weather of the off-season.
