Alhambra

The Alhambra in Granada on the Sabikah hill is probably the most famous sight in the whole of Andalusia. And with good reason! The monumental and beautiful fortress is breathtaking! The Alhambra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 and is the most visited monument in the whole of Spain. The "red castle" is considered the pinnacle of Islamic architecture and served as the residence of the Nasrid kings for 250 years. Construction began in the 9th century and the fortress was mainly used as a guard point, but large parts of the complex were not built until the 14th century and the castle was converted into a palace. It was handed over to the Catholic Monarchs in the course of the Christian reconquest. A visit to the Alhambra takes you back to a bygone era. The entire complex includes the citadel called Alcazaba, the palaces of the Nasrids and the gardens. Admire the splendor and richness of detail of this special building, you will be overwhelmed.More...

Granada Cathedral

The cathedral is the heart of the city and yet it is somewhat overshadowed by the Alhambra, which towers above it all. But the cathedral is also worth a visit! Like many other buildings in Andalusia, the Cathedral of Santa María de la Encarnación de Granada was built on the remains of a mosque. Historically, the cathedral also stands for the triumph of the Reconquista, which came to an end here in Granada. The church was built according to the Gothic principle as a five-nave church with a transept, but with the change of architect and fashion, a building in the Italian Renaissance style was built on the ground plan. The church was consecrated in 1561. Although the final work was not completed until 1704.

Monasterio de San Jerónimo

The Monasterio de San Jerónimo in Granada, located in the western part of the city center, was founded by the Catholic Monarchs. Construction of the monastery began in 1504. The monastery, which belongs to the Augustinian order, is dedicated to Saint Jerome and was built in the Renaissance style. Visit the monastery and stroll through the gardens with the orange trees, the cloisters and admire the richly decorated coffered ceiling, the huge sculptures and the altarpiece in the main chapel by Pablo de Rojas, which is populated with numerous mythical creatures and angels.

Alcaicería

The Alcaicería is a maze of streets and alleyways around the cathedral and the city's bazaar. There are countless stores here selling leather goods, fabrics, spices and much more. Arab traders have been selling their wares here in the shopping street for a long time, but Andalusian stores have now also joined them. Let yourself drift, browse through the products and let yourself be carried away into the world of Arab markets, with all their colors and smells.

Albaicín

The old Arab quarter of Granada lies at the foot of the Alhambra hill. In this quarter you will find the Moorish palace "Dar Al-Horra" and the oldest and best-preserved Arab baths in Andalusia, El Bañuelo. Stroll through the quarter and let yourself drift through the labyrinth of narrow alleyways and small squares. Don't miss the view of the Alhambra from the "Mirador de San Nicolas".Less
