Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal)

Famously described by Mark Twain as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world," this poignant monument is carved directly into a sheer sandstone cliff face. It depicts a dying lion resting over a shattered shield, created in memory of the heroic Swiss Guards who lost their lives defending the Tuileries Palace during the French Revolution.
