What I appreciate most about this itinerary is the single night in Interlaken: not a full stay but a dedicated Bernese Oberland immersion that would be impossible to absorb as a day trip from Lucerne, and the Grand Beau Rivage puts you directly between the two lakes at the foot of the Jungfrau massif. The Golden Round Trip to Mount Pilatus is one of the few Swiss alpine experiences that genuinely earns its reputation; circling the mountain by cogwheel railway up and lake boat down gives you a complete perspective that a simple cable car return simply doesn't approach. Book the Neuschwanstein excursion as early in the day as possible: the Marienbrücke bridge access trail fills before 9am in summer, and the morning light on the castle face is noticeably different from the midday version.

Day 3 - 4
Munich, the lively capital of Bavaria and the third-largest city in Germany, lies on the banks of the River Isar. A modern hub complete with state-of-the-art skyscrapers and an exciting nightlife scene, the city revels simultaneously in its traditional customs and its sense of innovation. Some of the phenomenal historical attractions include spectacular Schloss Nymphenburg and the grand Residenz Museum, along with countless others. Nicknamed ‘city of art and beer’, Munich is strewn with impressive and diverse galleries (top choices include the Kunstareal Art Quarter and other-worldly Pinakothek der Moderne) and offers sublime beer-tasting opportunities in a variety of wonderful beer houses and gardens. Locals claim this is the culinary capital of the country - make sure to visit the Viktualienmarkt and dedicate some time to the metropolis’ restaurants. Gorgeous parks, jaw-dropping sports venues, and world-famous festivals (including legendary Octoberfest) complete the package.

Bavaria is famous around the world for its beer, and Munich sits right at the heart of this rich brewing tradition — far beyond Oktoberfest alone. On this guided shared tour, you’ll dive into the city’s beer culture by visiting traditional breweries, lively beer gardens, historic beer halls, and authentic beer cellars. Along the way, you’ll sample some of Bavaria’s finest brews while discovering the stories, traditions, and craftsmanship behind them.
Day 5
Zurich, or 'Zuri' as it is fondly known by its multicultural inhabitants, lies in northern Switzerland at the meeting point of a beautiful lake and river, with the magnificent snow-capped Swiss Alps standing guard high above it. This fairy tale city is renowned for its beauty, cleanliness, efficiency, and heritage. Explore medieval alleyways peppered with quirky corner cafes, steepled churches, trendy taprooms, and world-class galleries and restaurants. A day in Zurich can include browsing the unrivalled selection of luxury stores on it’s famous shopping strip, the Bahnhofstrasse; riding the Polybahn, the 19th-century funicular up a steep hill to admire the spectacular view; or ‘renting’ a free bike or skateboard to meander along the banks of picturesque Lake Zurich. The venerable palace of art at the Kunsthaus is also a major drawcard, containing numerous world-famous masterpieces.

Day 6 - 7
Located in central Switzerland in the German-speaking part of the country, Lucerne is undeniably one of Europe's most enchanting cities. With its magnificent lakeside and mountain scenery, its remarkable variety of tourist attractions and its idyllic location at the northwest end of Lake Lucerne, the city is thought by many to be the epitome of 'true' Switzerland as well as the gateway to Central Switzerland. The landscape is a wonderland of snow-capped mountains, glistening lakes, cowbells, alpine villages and meadows full of Edelweiss. The pedestrianised centre of the city is a maze of cobblestone streets lined with medieval-style buildings adorned with wonderful displays of colourful flowers. Presiding over the old town, the original city wall provides stunning views. One of the main attractions is crossing the Reuss River on the famous Chapel Bridge.

Travel from Lucerne to Kriens and ride the panoramic gondolas up to Fräkmüntegg, where you transfer to the Dragon Ride cable car. Enjoy spectacular views through the large windows as you ascend to the summit of Mount Pilatus at 2,132 meters. At the top, explore the interactive Dragon World, take a walk along the scenic Dragon Trail, or enjoy a short hike if weather allows. Relaxon the terrace and admire breathtaking views of the Alps and the lakes below. Enjoy a traditional Swiss meal at one of the mountain restaurants before experiencing the highlight of the day – an exciting descent on the world’s steepest cogwheel railway to Alpnachstad. Finish with a relaxing one-hour boat cruise on Lake Lucerne, taking in the beautiful scenery from a whole new perspective.
Day 8
Few towns can boast a position as privileged as the Victorian resort town of Interlaken. As the name implies, this small Swiss gem lies on an alluvial plain between two of Switzerland’s loveliest lakes in the mountainous Bernese Oberland region. Surrounded by crystal-clear streams, incredible waterfalls and extraordinary mountain scenery (including the icy peaks of the Eiger, the Monch and the Jungfrau) Interlaken is an ideal home base for travellers wanting to explore the area. There are plenty of adrenaline-filled activities to thrill adventure-sports enthusiasts, with climbing, hiking and paragliding available in summer and 200km of prime pistes on offer for skiers and snowboarders in winter. Historic paddle steamers cruise the two lakes and a classic funicular will transport you to a high lookout point where you can marvel at the awesome beauty of this picturesque holiday destination.

Day 9 - 10
Zurich, or 'Zuri' as it is fondly known by its multicultural inhabitants, lies in northern Switzerland at the meeting point of a beautiful lake and river, with the magnificent snow-capped Swiss Alps standing guard high above it. This fairy tale city is renowned for its beauty, cleanliness, efficiency, and heritage. Explore medieval alleyways peppered with quirky corner cafes, steepled churches, trendy taprooms, and world-class galleries and restaurants. Berlin and Munich anchor the German section, the train crosses into Switzerland at Zurich, and the journey deepens into the alpine interior at Lucerne and Interlaken before returning to Zurich for departure. It moves from the urban and historical toward the increasingly dramatic and vertical, and each transition feels earned.
The Golden Round Trip up Mount Pilatus from Lucerne is one of the more significant single days of the whole ten. What I always tell people: check the forecast the evening before and rearrange the day if cloud is expected above 1,500 meters. A clear morning at the summit, with the Swiss plateau spread below and the alpine chain stretching east, is worth waiting for.
Hotel: Hotel AMANO Berlin-Mitte
Two nights with the half-day city tour, the hop-on hop-off with the boat, and the evening food walking tour. The food tour tells a different story from the monuments and is worth placing after the historical circuit rather than before it. The Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, and the East Side Gallery cover the political geography of the city efficiently on the first day.
Hotel: CORTIINA Hotel
The beer and food tour on one day and the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof excursion on the other is the right allocation for two Munich nights. Linderhof tends to be rushed through because Neuschwanstein draws all the attention — don't let that happen. The palace is smaller but more lavishly finished, the grotto and the cascade gardens are extraordinary, and the crowds are a fraction of those next door.
Hotel: Townhouse Boutique Hotel
One night in Zurich with the Old Town, the Bahnhofstrasse, and the lakefront at leisure. The city at this point in the journey is primarily a transition, but the evening walk along the lake rewards the time.
Hotel: Grand Hotel National Luzern
Two nights with the Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip on one full day and the Old Town, the Chapel Bridge, and the lakeside promenades on the other. The Chapel Bridge is best walked early in the morning before the day trips from Zurich arrive — at that hour the painted panels above your head and the lake on either side have a quality of calm that the midday version never provides.
Hotel: Grand Beau Rivage Interlaken
One night between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz with the Jungfrau above. Even without taking the train to the Jungfraujoch, the landscape around Interlaken — the alpine meadows, the two lakes, and the Eiger and Mönch filling the southern horizon — is among the most immediately impressive in Central Europe.
Hotel: Townhouse Boutique Hotel
A final night before departure. The return to Zurich after the alpine interior gives the city a different quality from the transit stop it was on day five. The lakeside promenade in the evening, with the Alps on the southern horizon, is the right close.
