What convinces me about this self-drive structure is treating Freiburg as a full stop rather than a transit point. The culinary farmers market experience there is one of the sharpest introductions to Black Forest regional cooking you'll find, landing at exactly the right moment: midway through the journey, before the pace shifts into Bavaria. Plan the Neuschwanstein excursion for an early start, before the tour buses reach the access road, and the alpine approach becomes a completely different experience.

Day 1 - 3
Heidelberg offers romance and historical intrigue in equally large measure as it rests on the banks of the Neckar River in southwestern Germany. As the home of countless lively beer gardens, Germany’s oldest university, and, of course, the world’s most famous castle ruins, this remarkable city offers a virtually unrivalled variety of culture and entertainment. The highlight is undoubtedly the magnificent Heidelberg Castle, which towers majestically above the Neckar Valley, offering panoramic views of the exquisite baroque Old Town and the surrounding forested hills. Venture beyond the tourist hotspots, and discover an array of beautiful old monuments and churches interspersed with exclusive boutiques, cosy student pubs, breweries and wine bars at every turn. This lively metropolis, with its picturesque scenery and pleasant climate, appeals to various tastes and satisfies almost any interest.

Glide along the Neckar River aboard a solar-powered vessel and enjoy peaceful views of Heidelberg from the water. During the 50-minute cruise, you’ll learn about the innovative solar shuttle while taking in highlights of the city and its surrounding areas. Refreshing drinks, snacks, coffee, and cake are available on board for purchase, making this a relaxing and scenic way to experience Heidelberg.
Day 4 - 5
Known officially as ‘Freiburg im Breisgau’, this cheerful university town is located in Germany’s sunny southwest, on the western edge of the Black Forest. The city is centred around an impressive old Münster and a charming medieval Altstadt complete with gabled townhouses, cobblestone lanes and cafe-lined plazas. This central area forms one huge pedestrian mall and, aside from trams and bicycles, it is entirely free of traffic. While the city’s relatively small size makes it easy to explore on foot, the sizeable university adds to the vibrant, upbeat atmosphere. Don’t miss the trip up to the Schlossberg or Rosskopf via the funicular railway, or better still, take the cable car up Schauinsland peak and walk or bike back to town. With its impressive museums, fascinating history, excellent shopping, lively nightlife and fabulous food, Freiburg makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding mountains and the magnificent Black Forest.

Discover the historic heart of Freiburg on this guided walking tour through its vibrant city center. Marvel at the striking Gothic Freiburg Minster, meander along charming cobblestone streets, and soak in the lively atmosphere of bustling squares. Learn about the city’s history, culture, and hidden gems as you explore the unique “Bächle” canals and quaint alleys. With your guide bringing Freiburg’s stories to life, this tour offers the perfect introduction to the city’s architecture, charm, and lively spirit.
Day 6 - 8
Munich, the lively capital of Bavaria and the third-largest city in Germany, lies on the banks of the River Isar. A modern hub complete with state-of-the-art skyscrapers and an exciting nightlife scene, the city revels simultaneously in its traditional customs and its sense of innovation. Some of the phenomenal historical attractions include spectacular Schloss Nymphenburg and the grand Residenz Museum, along with countless others. Nicknamed ‘city of art and beer’, Munich is strewn with impressive and diverse galleries (top choices include the Kunstareal Art Quarter and other-worldly Pinakothek der Moderne) and offers sublime beer-tasting opportunities in a variety of wonderful beer houses and gardens. Locals claim this is the culinary capital of the country - make sure to visit the Viktualienmarkt and dedicate some time to the metropolis’ restaurants. Gorgeous parks, jaw-dropping sports venues, and world-famous festivals (including legendary Octoberfest) complete the package.

Bavaria is famous around the world for its beer, and Munich sits right at the heart of this rich brewing tradition — far beyond Oktoberfest alone. On this guided shared tour, you’ll dive into the city’s beer culture by visiting traditional breweries, lively beer gardens, historic beer halls, and authentic beer cellars. Along the way, you’ll sample some of Bavaria’s finest brews while discovering the stories, traditions, and craftsmanship behind them.

Heidelberg to Freiburg to Munich — the road moves south through the Neckar Valley, into the Black Forest, and then across Bavaria toward the Alps. Each stop has its own distinct character, and the drive between them is part of the experience rather than just transit. Picking up the rental car in Heidelberg and returning it in Munich is the right format: the route is coherent, the distances are manageable, and the landscape shifts visibly with each leg.
The Neuschwanstein and Linderhof excursion from Munich consistently earns the strongest single impression of the Bavarian section. Linderhof, as I always tell people, tends to be treated as secondary to Neuschwanstein and it shouldn't be — the palace is more intimately scaled and more lavishly finished, the grotto below the terrace is extraordinary, and the crowds are a fraction of those next door.
Hotel: Hotel Holländer Hof
Three nights with the walking tour and castle visit, the Neckarsonne boat ride, and time in the Old Town and on the Philosopher's Walk. The boat ride on the Neckar gives you the castle ruins, the wooded hillside, and the baroque skyline from the water — a perspective that the famous hill views don't provide.
Hotel: Hotel Victoria, BW Signature Collection
Two nights with the Freiburg walking tour, the culinary farmers market, and the scenic Black Forest drives. The market in the Münsterplatz on a weekday morning — the cheese, the forest honey, the regional wines — is the most direct introduction to what makes Freiburg's food culture distinct. The Black Forest drives reward a slow pace: the Feldberg summit road, the Titisee, and the Kinzig Valley each open up differently.
Hotel: King's Hotel First Class
Two nights with the beer and food tour, the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof premium excursion, and the historic center across the stay. The Viktualienmarkt, close to the hotel, is worth a morning visit — it has been operating continuously since 1807 and gives you Munich's daily food culture at its most unperformed.
