Romantic Road Castles Itinerary: Heidelberg to Munich

Heidelberg offers romance and historical intrigue in equally large measure as it rests on the banks of the Neckar River in southwestern Germany. This central area forms one huge pedestrian mall and, aside from trams and bicycles, it is entirely free of traffic. While the city’s relatively small size makes it easy to explore on foot, the sizeable university adds to the vibrant, upbeat atmosphere. Don’t miss the trip up to the Schlossberg or Rosskopf via the funicular railway, or better still, take the cable car up Schauinsland peak and walk or bike back to town. Munich, the lively capital of Bavaria and the third-largest city in Germany, lies on the banks of the River Isar. A modern hub complete with state-of-the-art skyscrapers and an exciting nightlife scene, the city revels simultaneously in its traditional customs and its sense of innovation. Some of the phenomenal historical attractions include spectacular Schloss Nymphenburg and the grand Residenz Museum, along with countless others.
