Don’t miss the trip up to the Schlossberg or Rosskopf via the funicular railway, or better still, take the cable car up Schauinsland peak and walk or bike back to town. The Römerberg market in Frankfurt sits among half-timbered houses in the heart of a modern financial city. In Heidelberg, the stalls are spread across several squares in the historic center, right at the foot of the castle. Freiburg's market fills the square in front of the red sandstone Old Town Hall, with the hills of the Black Forest rising at the edge of the city. The journey ends in Strasbourg with the largest of the four markets, shaped by the blend of French and German traditions typical of Alsace.
Before leaving Frankfurt, order a heißer Äppler, the city's signature hot apple wine, instead of the usual Glühwein (mulled wine). It's a local specialty you won't find at the other markets on this route. Pair it with Bethmännchen, the small marzipan treats Frankfurt bakers make during Advent.
Day 1: Frankfurt

Days 2–3: Heidelberg

Two nights, including a walking tour of Heidelberg, a visit to the castle, and a day trip to the Rhine Valley. The walking tour and castle visit fit easily into the first day. On the second day, head north to Oberwesel for a tasting of local Riesling. This medieval wine town on the Middle Rhine is still encircled by its old walls and towers.
Days 4–5: Freiburg im Breisgau

Two nights, including a walking tour of Freiburg and a culinary tour of the farmers market. A private transfer takes you south from Heidelberg along the edge of the Black Forest. In the historic center, keep an eye out for the Bächle, the little water channels that run along the streets. According to local legend, anyone who steps into one will marry someone from Freiburg.
Days 6–8: Strasbourg

Two nights, including the Christmas Market Magic Tour and the Alsace Christmas Markets Tour. The train from Freiburg takes about an hour, and the hotel is near the canals of Petite France, within easy walking distance of the main markets. The Alsace tour takes you through the wine villages south of the city, where towns like Colmar and Riquewihr decorate their half-timbered streets for Advent. The markets there are smaller and more intimate than Strasbourg's.
