Structuring the route so Strasbourg follows Freiburg is the decision that makes this crossing work, and it's why I always sequence the itinerary in this direction. You arrive in Alsace through a corridor where German and French cultures have been trading and cooking together for centuries, and the shift feels earned rather than abrupt. The vineyard tour through Riquewihr and Colmar is the excursion I would never cut; those half-timbered wine villages are best absorbed as a dedicated day from Strasbourg rather than a rushed afternoon stop. The skip-the-line Versailles access saves closer to an hour at the gate than most people budget for, and it's the detail that makes or breaks the day.

Day 1
Frankfurt is a city of bizarre contrasts and contradictions. As the economic powerhouse of Germany, its famously futuristic skyline glistens with massive, ultramodern skyscrapers, and its street are abuzz with large herds of suits scurrying around the avant-garde superstructures of its central business district. But Frankfurt is by no means all work and no play. At its heart lies an unexpectedly traditional, medieval Alstadt (old city) complete with half-timbered buildings housing apple-wine taverns which serve hearty local dishes, and village-like neighbourhoods brimming with quirky boutiques, trendy galleries and cutting-edge street art. Add to this melting pot a slew of museums, theatres and opera houses, as well as an unbeatable 24-hour party scene, and you’ll find that this sophisticated, cosmopolitan city has much more to offer than initially meets the eye.

Frankfurt’s history comes alive in the striking contrast between its historic Old Town and its modern skyline. First mentioned by the Romans in 794, the city has long been a center of commerce and culture, serving as the coronation site for kings and emperors. Over the centuries, Frankfurt has been home to many internationally renowned poets and thinkers, including Goethe, Johann Senckenberg, and Heinrich Hoffmann.
Take the time to enjoy this guided tour through Frankfurt and discover highlights such as:
Day 2 - 3
Heidelberg offers romance and historical intrigue in equally large measure as it rests on the banks of the Neckar River in southwestern Germany. As the home of countless lively beer gardens, Germany’s oldest university, and, of course, the world’s most famous castle ruins, this remarkable city offers a virtually unrivalled variety of culture and entertainment. The highlight is undoubtedly the magnificent Heidelberg Castle, which towers majestically above the Neckar Valley, offering panoramic views of the exquisite baroque Old Town and the surrounding forested hills. Venture beyond the tourist hotspots, and discover an array of beautiful old monuments and churches interspersed with exclusive boutiques, cosy student pubs, breweries and wine bars at every turn. This lively metropolis, with its picturesque scenery and pleasant climate, appeals to various tastes and satisfies almost any interest.

The vibrant city of Heidelberg is full of history and charm, best discovered with a private guide. This combined Old Town and castle tour brings the city’s past to life. Wander through the winding streets of the Old Town, uncovering Heidelberg’s many facets—from picturesque squares and the Church of the Holy Spirit to Germany’s oldest university and the historic Jewish Quarter.
Then, ascend to the castle via the funicular railway. Explore the inner courtyard and gardens, admire the ruins of the former electoral residence, and visit the famous giant wine barrel, a symbol of Heidelberg’s storied past.
Day 4 - 5
Known officially as ‘Freiburg im Breisgau’, this cheerful university town is located in Germany’s sunny southwest, on the western edge of the Black Forest. The city is centred around an impressive old Münster and a charming medieval Altstadt complete with gabled townhouses, cobblestone lanes and cafe-lined plazas. This central area forms one huge pedestrian mall and, aside from trams and bicycles, it is entirely free of traffic. While the city’s relatively small size makes it easy to explore on foot, the sizeable university adds to the vibrant, upbeat atmosphere. Don’t miss the trip up to the Schlossberg or Rosskopf via the funicular railway, or better still, take the cable car up Schauinsland peak and walk or bike back to town. With its impressive museums, fascinating history, excellent shopping, lively nightlife and fabulous food, Freiburg makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding mountains and the magnificent Black Forest.

Discover the historic heart of Freiburg on this guided walking tour through its vibrant city center. Marvel at the striking Gothic Freiburg Minster, meander along charming cobblestone streets, and soak in the lively atmosphere of bustling squares. Learn about the city’s history, culture, and hidden gems as you explore the unique “Bächle” canals and quaint alleys. With your guide bringing Freiburg’s stories to life, this tour offers the perfect introduction to the city’s architecture, charm, and lively spirit.
Day 6 - 7
The seat of European Parliament, Strasbourg presents an interesting fusion of cultures, from ancient to uber-modern. The medieval district contrasts sharply with the space-age architecture of its swanky EU quarter, while its rich traditions have not been diminished by its vibrant student population. Take some time to explore the city’s fairytale old town, with its cobbled lanes, exquisite stone cathedral and half-timbered medieval houses; visit the charming ‘Petite France’ neighbourhood on the Grand Isle; take an evening river cruise to see the city illuminated at night. To experience Strasbourg’s gastronomic delights, do a wine-tasting tour in the surrounding countryside and end the day sampling authentic Alsatian cuisine in a traditional ‘winstubs’.

Set out on an unforgettable journey along the legendary Alsace Wine Route, where rolling vineyards, charming villages, and centuries-old traditions come together to create one of France’s most distinctive wine regions.
Travel through picturesque landscapes dotted with colorful half-timbered houses as you visit carefully selected local wineries renowned for their craftsmanship and character. Enjoy intimate, guided tastings of Alsace’s exceptional white wines, including elegant Riesling, aromatic Gewurztraminer, and fresh, floral Muscat.
At each stop, learn about the region’s unique winemaking methods, the importance of terroir, and the stories behind its most iconic varietals. Meet passionate local experts who will share their knowledge, traditions, and love for their craft in a warm and welcoming setting.
Perfect for wine enthusiasts and curious travelers alike, this tour offers an authentic and enriching introduction to Alsace’s celebrated wine culture.
Day 8 - 11
The Parisian suburb of Issy-les-Moulineaux lies on the western bank of the River Seine, about six and a half kilometres from the Notre-Dame Church. Boasting a wealth of heritage, a dazzling array of public parks and several other interesting attractions, the town of Issy-les-Moulineaux offers a fantastic base from which to explore the city while being filled with plenty to offer of its own. Must-see historical sights include the curious curvilinear Flag of the Conti building, housing a gallery; the grand City Hall, with origins in the 19th century; and numerous exquisite churches and squares. Nature lovers will delight in the gorgeous, pristine and colourful gardens scattered throughout the city, while sports enthusiasts will be pleased to see numerous centres and facilities here. Other highlights include the house of literary master Victor Hugo and the wonderful Museum of Playing Cards.

Frankfurt opens the trip as a transit point that earns more than a transit stop. The Römer and the cathedral give the old city its proper introduction, and the modern skyline above the Main River tells a second, more recent story about Germany that the medieval towns ahead don't. From there, the journey moves south and west through Heidelberg, the Black Forest, Alsace, and finally Paris — a sequence that shifts from Germanic romanticism through Franco-German ambiguity to the unmistakable clarity of the French capital.
The Alsace vineyard tour from Strasbourg through Colmar and Riquewihr is the day I'd always highlight first when talking through this itinerary. The Alsatian wine route is one of the most visually concentrated stretches of European viticulture — half-timbered villages in full flower, the Vosges rising behind, and Riesling and Gewürztraminer tasted at source in cellars that have been producing wine in this exact corridor since the Roman period.
Hotel: Sofitel Frankfurt Opera Hotel
One night with the Römer walking tour covering the old city's main squares, the cathedral, and the riverfront Sachsenhausen district. Frankfurt is a city most visitors pass through — the walking tour earns it a genuine first impression rather than a transit experience.
Hotel: NH Collection Heidelberg
Two nights with the Heidelberg walking tour and castle visit, and the Rhine Valley excursion with Oberwesel and wine tasting. Der Europäischer Hof has anchored Heidelberg's main boulevard since 1865 — a fitting address for a city that takes its romantic reputation seriously.
Hotel: Hotel Victoria, BW Signature Collection
Two nights with the Black Forest excursion on one day and the Freiburg walking tour and culinary farmers market experience on the other. The market in the Münsterplatz on a weekday morning is the most straightforward way to understand what makes Freiburg different from any other German city.
Hotel: Mercure Strasbourg Centre Petite France Hotel
Two nights in the Petite France district — the most photographed corner of a city that earns the attention — with the Alsace vineyard tour and the Colmar and Riquewihr excursion as the main day. The Gothic cathedral's astronomical clock and the canal views from the Ponts Couverts fill the remaining time without effort.
Hotel: Aparthotel Adagio Paris Centre Tour Eiffel
Three nights near the Eiffel Tower with the Seine sightseeing cruise, the Louvre and city walk, and the Versailles trip with skip-the-line access spread across the stay. Versailles earns a weekday placement — the gardens and the palace both read better without the weekend crowds, and the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon on the estate are frequently missed by visitors who don't allow enough time.
