The Wachau excursion works best placed early in the Vienna stay because the vineyard terraces and Melk Monastery rising above the Danube provide a rural Austrian context that sets the rest of the journey apart from a purely urban experience. Three nights for the Salzburg and Hallstatt combination is the right call: Hallstatt is a full-day commitment, and having Salzburg's Old Town and the Sound of Music countryside on adjacent days means neither stop feels rushed. The Sound of Music tour covers Salzkammergut locations unreachable on foot from the Old Town, and the morning light on the lake reflections at Fuschlsee and Wolfgangsee is at its clearest before midday traffic picks up.

Day 1 - 3
Resting over the banks of the Danube River in northeastern Austria, Vienna, the country’s capital city, is famous for its classical music heritage and reflects an enticing blend of old and new. The historical centre is skyscraper-free and dotted with immaculate, charming little parks. It is also pedestrian friendly and extremely compact, which is convenient as this area contains the bulk of the city’s major tourist highlights. Chief among these are the famous Burgtheater and Opera House and an array of opulent baroque palaces lining the warren of narrow, medieval alleyways which wind their way around the magnificent St Stephen’s Cathedral. Add to this a slew of grand coffee houses and a rich history of classical music (residents included Mozart and Beethoven) and it becomes difficult to imagine a more livable city than the sophisticated metropolis of Vienna.

Vienna for three nights and Salzburg with the Hallstatt excursion for the remaining days — a week that covers Austria's two most distinctive cities and one of its most iconic landscapes in a sequence that makes cultural and geographic sense. The shift from Vienna's imperial formality to Salzburg's baroque compactness to the vertical drama of Hallstatt above its lake is one of the more satisfying transitions of any European itinerary.
Hallstatt tends to exceed expectations. The village is small — genuinely small, not tourist-small — and the lakeside setting, with the Dachstein glacier visible above and the prehistoric salt mines in the mountain behind, produces a combination of beauty and historical depth that photographs only partially capture. What I always tell people: arrive early in the morning before the day coaches from Salzburg and Bad Ischl arrive. The village at 8 a.m. belongs to the people who live there.

Three nights with the Imperial Palace walking tour, the Piaristenkeller dinner, and the Wachau Valley excursion spread across the days. The traditional dinner at Piaristenkeller — vaulted cellar, Viennese classics, house wine from the Wachau — is worth protecting in the schedule rather than leaving to chance. The Wachau Valley excursion earns its own full day: the Grüner Veltliner from the terraced vineyards above the Danube is almost entirely consumed within Austria, and tasting it on the riverbank makes the context obvious.

Three nights gives the Sound of Music tour, the Hallstatt day excursion, and the Old Town exploration at a pace that allows each to breathe. The Sound of Music tour is more engaging than its reputation suggests — the filming locations are genuinely distributed through the city and the surrounding countryside, and the historical context of the Trapp family's story gives the places additional weight. The Old Town itself rewards any evening spent without a reservation: the Getreidegasse, the Mirabell Gardens, and the riverfront promenade at dusk are the strongest version of Salzburg's character.
