Resting over the banks of the Danube River in northeastern Austria, Vienna, the country’s capital city, is famous for its classical music heritage and reflects an enticing blend of old and new. The historical centre is skyscraper-free and dotted with immaculate, charming little parks. It is also pedestrian friendly and extremely compact, which is convenient as this area contains the bulk of the city’s major tourist highlights. Chief among these are the famous Burgtheater and Opera House and an array of opulent baroque palaces lining the warren of narrow, medieval alleyways which wind their way around the magnificent St Stephen’s Cathedral. Add to this a slew of grand coffee houses and a rich history of classical music (residents included Mozart and Beethoven) and it becomes difficult to imagine a more livable city than the sophisticated metropolis of Vienna.

Four nights at the Rosewood Vienna gives the city the time it actually deserves. Vienna works best when the days are not fully committed to organized visits — the coffeehouses, the Ring boulevard at dusk, and the Naschmarkt on a Saturday morning are each as characterful as any palace or concert hall, and the itinerary here leaves room for all of them.

The private dinner at the Vienna Ferris Wheel — the Riesenrad in the Prater — is one of those experiences that sounds theatrical and turns out to be truly memorable. The gondola car converted to a private dining room, rotating slowly above the city while the lights come on below, gives Vienna's evening a completely different dimension from a restaurant table.
The Haus der Musik's interactive approach to the city's musical heritage — the floors dedicated to Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, and Mahler — is more engaging than a standard museum because it lets you conduct the Vienna Philharmonic on a virtual podium and hear what happens. Worth an afternoon on its own. The strudel baking course adds a hands-on dimension to the culinary tradition, and the Wachau Valley excursion gives the fourth day its outdoor counterbalance — the terraced Grüner Veltliner vineyards above the Danube are almost entirely consumed within Austria, and tasting the wine at source makes that obvious.
