The escalation from Innsbruck to Zurich to St. Moritz to Zermatt is the structural backbone I find most convincing about this route: each leg moves deeper into the alpine core, and by the time the Matterhorn appears above Zermatt, the visual buildup across three previous mountain destinations gives it a weight it simply wouldn't carry as a first alpine stop. The Hallstatt excursion from Salzburg and the Annecy day trip from Geneva are the two I would never let clients skip; both operate on a different atmospheric register from their base cities and deliver the journey's most visually surprising moments. Book the panoramic car on the Glacier Express well in advance: summer availability is limited, and the Rhine Gorge and Oberalp Pass crossing in a standard car is a significant downgrade from the full panoramic experience.

Resting over the banks of the Danube River in northeastern Austria, Vienna, the country’s capital city, is famous for its classical music heritage and reflects an enticing blend of old and new. The historical centre is skyscraper-free and dotted with immaculate, charming little parks. It is also pedestrian friendly and extremely compact, which is convenient as this area contains the bulk of the city’s major tourist highlights. Chief among these are the famous Burgtheater and Opera House and an array of opulent baroque palaces lining the warren of narrow, medieval alleyways which wind their way around the magnificent St Stephen’s Cathedral. Add to this a slew of grand coffee houses and a rich history of classical music (residents included Mozart and Beethoven) and it becomes difficult to imagine a more livable city than the sophisticated metropolis of Vienna.

The internationally renowned Salzburg Festival, which takes place every summer, provides the ultimate way to enjoy this scene. Fans of the Sound of Music can retrace the characters’ steps backed by stunning scenes and vistas. Make sure to stroll along the beautiful Salzach River, climb up to the spectacular Hohensalzburg fortress, and try the famous, delicious beer brewed at the Augustiner Braustubl, a monastery-run brewery operating since 1621.

Relive the true story of the Von Trapp family, which was filmed as the 'Sound of Music' in the Salzburg area. This popular tour is a combination of historical Salzburg and the beautiful lakes and mountain areas surrounding the city.

Day 6 - 7
Innsbruck, the capital of the Tyrol state in Austria, lies within the Alps. With its relatively mild Alpine climate and outdoor sports facilities impressive enough to thrill even the most adventurous extreme-sports enthusiast, this spectacular historic city is the perfect springboard for making the leap between the urban and the outdoors. See Emperor Maximilian’s glorious fifteenth-century influences in the Gothic Hofkerche Cathedral, the city’s landmark Goldenes Dachl (golden roof), and the remarkable Gothic and Baroque buildings strewn along the winding cobbled streets of its charming historic Altstadt (Old Town). Every year thousands of tourists are drawn to this delightful picture-perfect city presided over by the imposing jagged peaks of the Nordkette mountain range and the majestic Habsburg palace.

The Nordkette Mountain is easily accessible from the heart of Innsbruck via the Nordkette Cable Car. Visitors are treated to a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the stunning surrounding Alpine mountain range.
The journey from the city center to the mountain peak is divided into three stages. Firstly, the Hungerburgbahn funicular railway takes you from the valley up to the Hungerburg in just 8 minutes. During this part of the journey, you have the option to disembark and visit the Alpen zoo, which is a popular destination for families with children (entrance fee included).
The second stage of the journey involves the Seegrubenbahn cable car, which takes you from the Hungerburg up to the Seegrube mountain peak at an elevation of 1,905 meters (6,250 ft). This is a perfect spot to relax and immerse yourself in the beauty of the Austrian nature.
The third and final part of the journey entails taking the Hafelekarbahn cable car from the Seegrube to Hafelekar, also known as the "Top of Innsbruck," located at an elevation of 2,300 meters (7,545 ft) Here, you will be greeted by some of the most magnificent views and also find a delightful restaurant where you can take a break and relax.
Starting Time:
Day 8 - 9
Zurich, or 'Zuri' as it is fondly known by its multicultural inhabitants, lies in northern Switzerland at the meeting point of a beautiful lake and river, with the magnificent snow-capped Swiss Alps standing guard high above it. This fairy tale city is renowned for its beauty, cleanliness, efficiency, and heritage. Explore medieval alleyways peppered with quirky corner cafes, steepled churches, trendy taprooms, and world-class galleries and restaurants. A day in Zurich can include browsing the unrivalled selection of luxury stores on it’s famous shopping strip, the Bahnhofstrasse; riding the Polybahn, the 19th-century funicular up a steep hill to admire the spectacular view; or ‘renting’ a free bike or skateboard to meander along the banks of picturesque Lake Zurich. The venerable palace of art at the Kunsthaus is also a major drawcard, containing numerous world-famous masterpieces.

Explore Zurich on a comfortable coach tour, passing landmarks such as the Swiss National Museum, the famous Bahnhofstrasse, and the bustling financial district. Pause at Enge Harbour for photo-worthy views of Lake Zurich, then continue along the lakeside past the Zurich Opera House to the elegant Zürichberg neighborhood. Take in panoramic views of the city, the lake, and the distant Alps before arriving in the historic Old Town for a guided walk through its medieval streets, featuring historic guild houses, the Town Hall, and renowned churches.
After the city tour, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Limmat River and board a relaxing 30-minute boat cruise on Lake Zurich. A short walk along the shore brings you to the Lindt Home of Chocolate, where you can explore the interactive museum, marvel at the world’s tallest chocolate fountain, and enjoy unlimited chocolate tastings. Stop by the Lindt Café and browse the extensive chocolate shop for souvenirs.
Your guide will accompany you back to Zurich Main Station using public transport, completing a full day of sightseeing and chocolate delights.
Day 10
Located in the southern Alps of Switzerland alongside an aquamarine lake, and surrounded by magnificent emerald forests and towering snow-capped peaks, St. Moritz is the star-studded epitome of exclusive, luxurious, ski resort towns. The quality and diversity of outdoor sports facilities are virtually unrivalled. Snow lovers flock here in winter for excellent skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, horse riding, curling, ice skating, ice cricket, and the world’s only Cresta run. This same crowd returns in summer to indulge in swimming, sailing, windsurfing, mountain biking, hiking, polo, tennis, and luxury shopping followed by a relaxing soak in the famously fizzy mineral springs. Whiskey lovers will enjoy a visit to Devil’s Place Bar, the most extensive whiskey bar in the world (listed in the Guinness Book of Records) - with 2500 varieties.

Day 11
Set in southern Switzerland’s Valais canton, at the foot of the mighty and jagged Matterhorn, one of the most recognizable mountains in the world, lies the quaint town of Zermatt. This popular tourist resort plays host to a combination of extreme sports enthusiasts, tour groups, backpackers and fur-clad socialites who use it’s ramshackle mazots and gorgeous wooden chalets as a base for exploring. Enjoy skiing, snowboarding, hiking and climbing the peaks of the surrounding snow-capped mountains, or explore the depths of the ancient geological marvel that is the Gorner Gorge. Indulge in Zermatt’s delicious cheese fondue served with a refreshing glass of Valais wine while floating past the Matterhorn on one of the city’s famous gondolas. History lovers will delight in the multimedia displays and artefacts at the Matterhorn Museum.

Day 12 - 14
Fringed by the Alps and Jura Mountains, and set at the southern end of the magnificent Lake Geneva, Geneva is a French-speaking Swiss city with plenty to offer every type of traveller. The City’s postcard-perfect old town, lined with a maze of cobbled alleys and sprinkled with historical monuments, charming antique stores and quaint cafes, appeals to history buffs, eager shoppers and foodies alike. A slick, modern cosmopolitan city surrounds this old-world charm, housing a thriving community of international expatriates, world-class restaurants, famous luxury jewellers and enough chocolate shops to satisfy even the most avid chocoholics. Geneva specialises in the finer things in life. The selection is overwhelming and makes for some great window shopping, which is practically a national sport in Switzerland.

After a comfortable coach ride across the border, enjoy a guided stroll through Annecy’s postcard-perfect old town—past pastel façades, lively squares, and canals fed by the River Thiou—then make the most of your free time to browse local markets, visit the château area, or simply relax with lunch by the lake. In the afternoon, return to Geneva for a panoramic city tour to discover the city’s essential landmarks and lakeside atmosphere. Complete the day with a boat cruise on Lake Geneva, a beautiful way to admire the shoreline and iconic Jet d’Eau from the water before the tour ends.

Vienna to Salzburg to Innsbruck, then Zurich, St. Moritz, Zermatt, and Geneva — fourteen days that cover the full alpine arc from the imperial east to the lakeside west, with the high mountain resorts in the Swiss middle giving the journey its most dramatic moments. Zermatt beneath the Matterhorn and St. Moritz in the Engadin Valley are each settings that earn a night on their own terms, regardless of season.
What I always tell people about Zermatt: the car-free village center produces a silence and a pace that you notice immediately after any other Swiss town. The Matterhorn is visible from almost every street. The Gornergrat cogwheel railway from the village center takes you to 3,089 meters in under 35 minutes, and the view from the observation terrace — the Matterhorn, the Monte Rosa group, and the Gorner Glacier spread below — earns every Swiss franc.
Hotel: SO/Vienna Hotel
Three nights with the Imperial Palace walking tour, the Piaristenkeller dinner, and the Wachau Valley excursion. The SO/Vienna's position near the Belvedere puts one of Vienna's finest palaces and gardens within easy walking distance for any afternoon between organized visits.
Hotel: Hotel Goldener Hirsch, a Luxury Collection Hotel
Two nights with the Sound of Music tour, the Lake District and Hallstatt excursion, and the Old Town. The Sound of Music tour is more engaging than its reputation suggests when approached with genuine curiosity — the filming locations are distributed through the city and the surrounding countryside, and the Trapp family's historical story adds weight to the places.
Hotel: Hotel Schwarzer Adler Innsbruck
Two nights with the Nordkette cable car and the historic center. The cable car from the Hungerburg station in the old town takes you from medieval streets to 2,256 meters in fifteen minutes — the Hafelekar ridge view over the Inn Valley is the most immediately dramatic alpine panorama of the whole journey.
Hotel: Central Plaza Hotel Zurich
Two nights with the guided walking tour, the lake cruise, and the museum visit. Arriving in Zurich after Innsbruck's mountain intensity gives the city a different quality — the cosmopolitan elegance and the lakeside calm feel like a transition rather than an arrival.
Hotel: Hotel Nolda
One night in the Engadin, reached by the Glacier Express or the Bernina Express from Zurich. The Engadin Valley's light — higher, clearer, and more crystalline than anywhere lower — is the first thing you notice on arrival.
Hotel: Hotel Butterfly BW Signature Collection
One night at the foot of the Matterhorn. The car-free village, the mountain light, and the Gornergrat excursion fill the day and the evening without any additional organization required.
Hotel: Eastwest Hotel
Two nights with the walking tour, the lake cruise, and the Annecy excursion. The Annecy day — the most photogenic town in the French Alps, with its canals, its château, and the turquoise lake below — is a strong final excursion before departure.
