The terrace arches offer an unbeatable, picture-perfect view looking straight down into the bustling Residenzplatz.

Augustiner Bräustübl

For a truly authentic, convivial local experience, head to Austria’s largest beer tavern, founded by Augustinian monks in 1621. Grab a heavy stone mug from the rack, rinse it in the fountain, and hand it to the brewer to be filled straight from wooden barrels. Find a seat under the sprawling chestnut trees in the massive beer garden or in the cavernous, vaulted halls, and pair your frosty beer with giant pretzels and roast pork from the bustling food stalls.

Museum der Moderne & Mönchsberg

Strikingly perched on the edge of the Mönchsberg cliff, this sleek, minimalist museum is a brilliant contemporary contrast to the historic city below. It houses an impressive collection of 20th- and 21st-century art within its spacious, light-filled galleries. Even if you aren't an art aficionado, taking the Mönchsberg elevator up to the museum's terrace restaurant, M32, is worth it simply for the spectacular, panoramic views over Salzburg.

Schloss Leopoldskron

Located just a short walk south of the historic center, this exquisite Rococo palace sits serenely on the edge of a glassy, swan-filled lake. While the interior is a private hotel, the public walking path around the water offers stunning views of the palace with the Hohensalzburg Fortress rising dramatically in the background. It is a tranquil, romantic spot, widely recognized as the outdoor film location for the von Trapp family home in The Sound of Music.
