St Patrick's Cathedral Dublin

St Patrick's Cathedral Dublin

St Patrick's Cathedral

Built in honor of Ireland's patron saint, Saint Patrick, Saint Patrick's Cathedral is located right next to the well-known spring where, according to tradition, Saint Patrick baptized converts during his visit to Dublin. The parish church of Saint Patrick was made a collegiate church in 1191 and a cathedral in 1224. The current building has existed since 1220 and is the state cathedral of the Church of Ireland (a church of the Anglican Church). St. Patrick's Cathedral is built in the Gothic style and its magnificent interior is decorated with funerary monuments such as that of the Boyle family and the tomb of the dean Jonathan Swift (author of Gulliver's Travels). Swift was dean of St Patrick's Cathedral until his death in 1745. The chancel is decorated with ornate windows and spectacular choir stalls, once used by the Knights of St Patrick. In the huge west towers there are large bells, whose sound is part of the cityscape of Dublin.

Kilkenny

Day 3

In the southeast of Ireland, north of Waterford in the province of Leinster, lies the exquisite medieval city of Kilkenny, often celebrated as ‘the Oasis of Ireland’ for its abundance of country pubs, vibrant arts scene, and rich collection of historical sites. The city's primary attractions are conveniently located along its famously beautiful "Medieval Mile," a stretch of historic buildings connecting the extravagantly turreted Kilkenny Castle and the impressive cathedral, all nestled along the scenic banks of the River Nore. For a relaxing day, explore the city's several immaculate parks and gardens, or indulge in the luxurious offerings of its world-class spas. If you're looking for outdoor activity, numerous scenic walking routes, the beautiful surrounds of picturesque wheatlands and stud farms, and world-renowned golf courses await. And don't miss the opportunity to visit the famous Dunmore Cave, home to fascinating relics from the tenth century.

Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle is one of the most easily recognized buildings in Ireland and has been an important site since it was built by the Anglo-Normans in the 12th century. This 12th-century castle was rebuilt in Victorian times and is surrounded by extensive parklands; the complex was once the main seat of the Butler family, the Marquesses and Dukes of Ormonde. After extensive restoration work, the central block now houses a library, a drawing room, and bedrooms that shine in the elegance of the 1830s; the beautiful Long Gallery can also be found here. Guided and self-guided tours are available. The Butler Gallery for contemporary art is housed in a suite of rooms that formerly housed the servants; regularly changing exhibitions are offered here.

Cork

Day 4 - 5

Welcome to Cork, a captivating Irish city nestled in the province of Munster in southwest Ireland! You'll find the city's compact center uniquely situated on an island in the River Lee, surrounded by an intricate network of waterways and reclaimed marshland islands. Explore the charming connections provided by limestone bridges, grand Georgian avenues, and quaint 17th-century alleyways adorned with gorgeous Georgian facades. Cork offers a diverse and vibrant arts and culture scene, alongside a tempting array of atmospheric tapas bars and exotic restaurants for you to discover. Popular attractions await, including the Crawford Art Gallery, showcasing a fine collection from the 18th to the 20th centuries, and the fascinating hi-tech cosmological displays at Blackrock Castle Observatory. However, a true highlight of your visit will undoubtedly be the chance to relax in one of Cork's cozy traditional pubs, order a locally brewed Murphy’s or a Beamish stout, and engage in some lively conversation with the city’s famously friendly locals.

The Rock of Cashel - The King of Irish Monuments

Set on a dramatic limestone cliff in the Golden Vale, the Rock of Cashel is an icon of historical significance and is home to the most impressive collection of medieval buildings in Ireland. Monuments include a round tower, a high cross, a Romanesque chapel, a Gothic cathedral, an abbey, the Hall of the Vicars Choral and a fifteenth-century Tower House.

Originally the seat of the Kings of Munster, legend has it that St Patrick himself came here to convert King Aenghus to Christianity. Brian Boru was crowned High King at Cashel in 978 and made the town his capital.

In 1101 the site was given over to the church, and Cashel quickly rose to become one of the most important centers of ecclesiastical power in the country.

The surviving buildings are remarkable. Cormac's Chapel, for example, contains the only surviving Romanesque frescoes in Ireland.

The Rock of Cashel is one of Ireland's most spectacular and - rightly - most visited tourist attractions.

Tralee

Day 6

Southwestern Ireland's County Kerry is home to Tralee, its vibrant capital and largest town, where a bustling yet down-to-earth coastal atmosphere awaits. Immerse yourself in centuries of history at the Kerry County Museum, which houses a remarkable collection of priceless archaeological artifacts. As you wander the ancient streets of the Old Town, you'll be greeted by beautiful 18th-century Georgian buildings and a charming array of local pubs, restaurants, bookshops, and antique stores lining the main streets and old lanes. Nature lovers should not miss a visit to the picturesque Banna Beach or a relaxing boat ride through the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre. An annual highlight you won't want to miss is the Rose of Tralee festival, a lively celebration of Irish culture complete with street performances, bustling markets, captivating theatre, and spectacular fireworks.
