What should you do in Syracuse?

With its ancient ruins, baroque squares, and medieval alleyways, Syracuse embodies the charm of Sicily past and present. The cathedral and the Neapolis archaeological park, home to the largest Greek amphitheater on the island, are at the top of the list of places to visit. In Ortygia, the old town on the peninsula where the city was founded almost 3 millennia ago, trendy wine bars and chic craft boutiques compete with lively markets.

What attractions are there in Syracuse?

Ortygia

Ortygia is the ancient heart of Syracuse, set on a small island connected to the mainland by two bridges. This historic center is a mosaic of Greek, Roman, and Baroque influences. Stroll through its narrow lanes to discover gems like the Temple of Apollo, the majestic Cathedral of Syracuse, and the mythic Arethusa Fountain. By day, it buzzes with café culture and lively markets; by night, it glows under soft lighting and sea breezes.More...

Greek Theater of Syracuse

One of the largest theaters of the ancient world, the Greek Theater in the Neapolis Archaeological Park could once seat up to 16,000 spectators. Carved directly into the limestone hillside, this open-air marvel overlooks the surrounding countryside and still hosts performances today. It’s a place where you can literally walk in the footsteps of ancient Greeks and imagine the epic dramas once staged here.

The Ear of Dionysius

Perhaps the most curious attraction in Syracuse is the Ear of Dionysius, a towering limestone cave with an acoustically perfect interior. Legend has it that the tyrant Dionysius used it to eavesdrop on prisoners held within, thanks to its sound-enhancing shape. The cave is both eerie and impressive, and it’s one of the most memorable stops in the Neapolis Archaeological Park.

Tecnoparco Archimede

This open-air museum is a tribute to Syracuse’s most famous resident: Archimedes. At Tecnoparco Archimede, you can explore large-scale replicas of the mathematician’s inventions, from war machines to water systems. Ideal for families and curious travelers alike, it offers an engaging way to understand the genius of one of history’s greatest minds.

Cathedral of Syracuse

Set in the heart of Ortygia’s Piazza Duomo, this cathedral is a striking example of Baroque architecture with a twist—it was built directly into the remains of an ancient Greek temple dedicated to Athena. You can still see the original Doric columns along the side walls. The building’s layered history, ornate façade, and peaceful interior make it a symbol of Syracuse’s cultural richness.

Maniace Fortress

Located at the tip of Ortygia, the Castello Maniace is a sea-facing fortress built in the 13th century by Emperor Frederick II. Originally a royal residence, it later became a prison during the reign of Ferdinand II of Aragon. Today, visitors can explore its vast stone halls, admire the dramatic coastal views, and browse the small archaeological museum housed inside.

Piazza del Duomo

Often cited as one of the most beautiful squares in all of Sicily, Piazza del Duomo is a showcase of Syracuse’s layered history and architectural grandeur. Lined with elegant palaces, the bishop’s residence, and the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia, this square is a perfect place to relax with a coffee or soak in the golden light that bathes the Baroque façades in the late afternoon.

Fountain of Arethusa

Nestled near the western edge of Ortygia, this freshwater spring is steeped in Greek mythology. According to legend, the nymph Arethusa fled here from Arcadia and was transformed into a spring by the goddess Artemis. Today, the Fountain of Arethusa is a tranquil spot with papyrus plants growing along its edges, offering a peaceful break from sightseeing.

Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia

This lovely Baroque church is located on Piazza del Duomo and is best known for housing Caravaggio’s The Burial of Saint Lucy. The building itself is modest compared to the nearby cathedral but offers an intimate setting to view one of the master’s most emotionally charged works, as well as insight into local devotion to the city’s patron saint.

Porto Piccolo Waterfront

For a scenic end to your Syracuse experience, head toward the Porto Piccolo waterfront. It’s a charming harbor area lined with fishing boats, small trattorias, and breezy walkways. Enjoy sunset views with a glass of Sicilian wine or take a boat tour along the coastline to see Ortygia from the water—a view that ties together the layers of this unforgettable city.Less
