The Jacobite Steam Train crossing at Glenfinnan needs careful preparation, and it's the moment I design this entire itinerary toward: right-hand forward-facing seats, reservation confirmed at the station before departure, and the full afternoon in Mallaig rather than rushing back. Moving through Glamis, Drum, and Crathes on consecutive days from the Aberdeen base gives each estate the attention it deserves; the three properties span different architectural periods, and the sequence reads as a coherent argument about how Scottish aristocratic culture evolved rather than a checklist. For the Loch Ness cruise, pair it directly with Urquhart Castle: the ruined tower house from the water is the view most photographs of the site are taken from, and the boat gives you that angle instead of the car park perspective from the shore road.

The world famous "Jacobite Express" is quite possibly the most beautiful and scenic train ride anywhere!
This 84-mile round trip, dubbed the most beautiful rail ride in the world, takes you past a series of awe-inspiring extremes. The journey begins near Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, and travels to Britain's westernmost train station, Arisaig, past Britain's deepest freshwater lake, Loch Morar, and Britain's shortest river, River Morar, until finally arriving at Europe's deepest seawater lake, Loch Nevis!
We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct (a site made famous by the Harry Potter films), the Loch Shiel and the Jacobite Memorial. If time permits, the train will stop on the viaduct to give you the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent views. If time permits we will stop at Glenfinnan station. After the stop in Glenfinnan, you'll have time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum in the restored station building. The Jacobite can also stop at Arisaig if you request this from the conductor.
Behind Glenfinnan lie the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You can get off at Arisaig if you ask the security guard to do so. From here on a clear summer day you can see the "Small Islands" of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye.
Day 8 - 9
Scotland's largest city, Glasgow, presents a captivating blend of art, culture, and history. Prepare to be impressed by its magnificent Victorian architecture, exemplified by landmarks such as the Glasgow City Chambers and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. A thriving art scene flourishes throughout Glasgow, with numerous galleries, vibrant theaters, and diverse music events awaiting discovery. The University of Glasgow stands as one of the oldest and most prestigious in the United Kingdom, adding to the city's intellectual vibrancy. Furthermore, the natural beauty surrounding Glasgow is easily accessible, with the stunning Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park just a short distance away.

Glengoyne Distillery - Tour & Tasting
Visit one of Scotland's most beautiful whisky distilleries....
Glengoyne is a distillery like no other. With its whitewashed walls and pagoda roof, it is picture-perfect and nestles at the foot of Dumgoyne Hill, the famous volcanic rock that shimmers like a mirage for the inhabitants of Glasgow. It is a happy, thriving community where tenth-generation distillers live, who make no compromises and never deviate from the methods they have adopted from their forefathers. The distillery is also at the forefront when it comes to offering entertaining and detailed tours for whisky experts and beginners alike. There is something for everyone here, and as Richard Grindall writes in The Spirit Of Whisky, "there can be no better place in the world to drink a glass of malt whisky".

Edinburgh, then northeast to Aberdeen's castle country, north through the Highlands to Inverness, west to Glencoe, and south to Glasgow — the route follows the grain of Scottish geography, and the landscape shifts perceptibly with each leg. By the time the Jacobite Steam Train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct, the cities feel very far away, which is precisely the point.
Glengoyne Distillery on the road between Glencoe and Glasgow is worth the stop. It sits directly on the Highland Line, with one side of the building technically in the Highlands and the other in the Lowlands — a detail that tells you something about how seriously Scotland takes these distinctions.
Hotel: Market Street Hotel
Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and the Scotch Whisky Experience give the opening two days a strong cultural foundation before the driving begins. The hidden closes running off the Mile reward exploration at dusk when the tourist traffic has thinned.
Hotel: Aberdeen Ardoe House Hotel & Spa
Glamis, Drum, and Crathes tell three different chapters of Scottish estate history and together make the northeast section genuinely substantial. Crathes' walled gardens are among the finest in Scotland and are worth the afternoon visit in their own right.
Hotel: Kingsmills Hotel
The Loch Ness cruise and Urquhart Castle fill a productive half-day. The whisky tasting at a local distillery fills the other well. The surrounding Highland roads reward an afternoon drive without a fixed destination — the Black Isle and the Moray Firth coast are straightforward from Inverness and consistently undervisited.
Hotel: Glencoe House
The Jacobite Steam Train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct in a way that earns its reputation regardless of any film connection — the viaduct spans a Highland glen with mountains on three sides, and the view from the carriage window as it crosses is as good as advertised. Book as early as possible; seats fill months in advance in summer.
Hotel: Dakota Hotel Glasgow
Glengoyne Distillery on the drive south, then the city's architecture, galleries, and cultural scene across the final evening and morning. The Dakota Hotel's contemporary tone makes a pointed contrast to the historic manor properties earlier in the trip.
May to September is the best period, with long days, mild weather, and reliable driving conditions. Spring and autumn also offer beautiful scenery and fewer crowds, though weather can be more changeable.
Your budget will depend on accommodation and car rental choices. Expect mid-range pricing for comfortable hotels and higher costs for premium stays or private driver services.
Classic stops include Edinburgh, the Highlands, and Loch Ness. Many travelers also add the Isle of Skye, known for its dramatic landscapes, and scenic drives through Glencoe.
Along the way, you can enjoy whisky tastings, hiking in the Highlands, and exploring castles. Boat tours on lochs and guided city walks add variety to the journey.
Book rental cars early, especially in summer, and get comfortable with driving on the left. Allow extra time for narrow country roads and frequent photo stops.

Lara was the perfect travel planner for…

My car trip to Scotland

Fast and spot-on

14 days through Scotland. It was great!
Lara was the perfect travel planner for our trip to Scotland 🏴 — competent, customer-oriented, and with super quick implementation. The anticipation for the vacation is very high thanks to the personalized website, and we are excited to see how it will be on site!
Dear Lara, thank you very much for your support in booking the graduation trip with my daughter to Scotland. At first, I was very unsure how I should manage everything. You took away this uncertainty by calmly explaining everything to me in your very pleasant and friendly way and giving great tips. I felt that you really empathized with our needs, which ultimately led to us getting a trip that suits us exactly. I was a bit confused at first because I suddenly received so many emails about scheduling, etc. But that’s totally fine — in hindsight even good. Because to keep your offer, you of course need to book in time. So, everything is in order. Now I’ve gotten through most of it and can...
Fast and spot-on: Ms. Schmidt always responded very quickly to our (change) requests for the trip through Scotland and found accommodations that matched our needs exactly. Completely uncomplicated and with a lot of charm. Thank you, A. S. B.
We had a two-week trip to Scotland planned by Tourlane. The planned route was great. It was just as we had imagined. Everything worked out perfectly with the car and everything else on the trip. Thank you Tourlane for the great planning. Questions were always answered quickly and helpfully. Many thanks for everything!
