The Warner Bros. Studio Tour needs its own full day, no competition from other London sightseeing. The Diagon Alley section, the Great Hall, and the Hogwarts castle model each require genuine attention rather than a rushed circuit at the end of a monument-heavy afternoon, and this is one of those experiences that genuinely earns its reputation when you give it time. Christ Church in Oxford is both a filming location and one of the most beautiful medieval dining halls in England; the visitor access windows around student mealtimes are narrow, so plan for them. The Jacobite Steam Train crossing at Glenfinnan is what the entire itinerary builds toward: right-hand seats facing forward, full afternoon in Mallaig before the return rather than rushing back.

The world famous "Jacobite Express" is quite possibly the most beautiful and scenic train ride anywhere!
This 84-mile round trip, dubbed the most beautiful rail ride in the world, takes you past a series of awe-inspiring extremes. The journey begins near Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, and travels to Britain's westernmost train station, Arisaig, past Britain's deepest freshwater lake, Loch Morar, and Britain's shortest river, River Morar, until finally arriving at Europe's deepest seawater lake, Loch Nevis!
We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct (a site made famous by the Harry Potter films), the Loch Shiel and the Jacobite Memorial. If time permits, the train will stop on the viaduct to give you the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent views. If time permits we will stop at Glenfinnan station. After the stop in Glenfinnan, you'll have time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum in the restored station building. The Jacobite can also stop at Arisaig if you request this from the conductor.
Behind Glenfinnan lie the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You can get off at Arisaig if you ask the security guard to do so. From here on a clear summer day you can see the "Small Islands" of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye.

London to Cheltenham via Oxford, then York, Edinburgh, and the Scottish Highlands — the route follows the geography of filming locations and genuine historical atmosphere in equal measure. The Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London is the essential set piece: the Great Hall, the Forbidden Forest, and the original sets and props are presented at a scale and level of detail that rewards more time than most visitors allocate. Book the first entry slot of the day.
The Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig across the Glenfinnan Viaduct closes the trip on a strong note. This is one of the most dramatic rail journeys in Britain regardless of any film connection — the viaduct spans a Highland glen with mountains on three sides, and the crossing is as good as advertised.
Hotel: H10 London Waterloo Hotel
The Harry Potter walking tour, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, the London Eye, Westminster Abbey, and the Thames river cruise fill three nights without any of it feeling compressed. The walking tour covers the real London locations — the Reptile House at London Zoo, the phone box on St. James's Square, the Claremont Square building in Islington — and it changes how you read the city afterward.
Hotel: The Greenway Hotel & Spa
The drive from London via Oxford — with a stop at Christ Church College, whose Great Hall inspired Hogwarts — and through the Cotswolds covers some of the most cinematic English countryside on the route. The Greenway Hotel and Spa is a Cotswold manor house set in its own grounds, and an evening there after the cities is a well-placed change of pace.
Hotel: B+B York
York's medieval streets, the Shambles, and the Gothic cathedral give the city its atmosphere. The Jorvik Viking Centre is a genuinely well-done underground museum that runs counter-clockwise through the archaeology of a Viking settlement — worth an hour on the second morning. The Shambles in the early morning, before the cafés open, is the most honest version of the lane that inspired Diagon Alley.
Hotel: Market Street Hotel
Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile walking tour, and the ghost tour through the historic closes fill two nights well. The Alnwick Castle excursion — where the broomstick flying lessons were filmed — takes you across the border into Northumberland for a day that earns the drive south.
Hotel: Corriegour Lodge Hotel
The Jacobite Steam Train and the Glenfinnan Viaduct on one day, the surrounding Highland landscapes on the other. The Corriegour Lodge sits on the shore of Loch Lochy, and the surrounding mountains and lochs give the final days a scale that London and the English cities make you genuinely ready for by the time you arrive.
May through September is ideal, with long days and milder weather for exploring filming locations and historic sites. Winter offers fewer crowds and a magical atmosphere, especially in Edinburgh and the Highlands, but travel times can be slower.
➔ Best time to travel England | Best time to travel Scotland
Expect to budget $1,800–$3,000 per person for a 9–12 day trip, depending on hotels, car rental, and special experiences like studio tours. Costs are higher in London, while the Scottish Highlands are more budget-friendly.
The journey combines filming locations with iconic English and Scottish landmarks. Travelers can visit the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London, Christ Church College in Oxford, the Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland, and explore Edinburgh’s magical Old Town.
Guided walking tours in London and Edinburgh, steam train rides across the Highlands, visits to castles, and museum stops enrich the journey. Fans can also join themed experiences such as potion-making classes or trivia tours.
Book Warner Bros. Studio tickets well in advance, allow extra time for driving in rural Scotland, and pack layers for unpredictable weather. Combining guided tours with self-drive makes the trip both efficient and flexible.
