Staying one night in Amalfi itself rather than basing the coastal chapter entirely in Sant'Agnello is the decision that changes how the coast reads, and it's a call I always make when the budget allows. The NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi is a converted 13th-century cliff convent, and having the harbor and the cathedral square after the day-trip boats leave gives you a version of Amalfi that no commuter visit can replicate. For Pompeii, Porta Marina entrance before 9am and straight toward the residential Regio VI district and the Villa of the Mysteries before the midday heat fills the civic monuments. For Rethymno, four nights means the Venetian harbor, the jeep safari, and the beaches each get their own day rather than competing for the same two afternoons.

Narrow streets wind their way up the hillside, showcasing clusters of distinctive white houses connected by covered alleys and stairways. At the heart of the town is Piazza del Duomo, where you'll find sidewalk cafés, stylish shops, and the beautiful Cathedral of St. Andrew, with its grand staircase, Arab-Norman-style bell tower, and the enchanting Cloister of Paradise. London and Edinburgh open the trip in Britain before the flight south into Italy shifts everything. The jump from Edinburgh's medieval castle to the Bay of Naples, with Vesuvius rising above it, is one of the sharper cultural transitions of any multi-country itinerary, and arriving on the Amalfi Coast after that gives the Italian section a sense of revelation that a direct flight from home could never produce.
The NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi — a converted 13th-century convent on the clifftop above the town — is the address I'd always mention first for the Amalfi section. Staying in a medieval monastery above the Mediterranean, with the coast dropping away on all sides, changes the experience of the Amalfi stay from a base to a destination in its own right.
Hotel: H10 London Waterloo Hotel
Three nights with the London Eye, the Oxford and Cotswolds day trip, and the central landmarks and neighborhoods. The Oxford and Cotswolds excursion works best on the second day, when the city is familiar enough to leave and return to with genuine pleasure.
Hotel: Virgin Hotels Edinburgh
Two nights with Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile exploration, and the West Highlands nature and castles tour. The Highlands tour follows the road through the Trossachs and past Loch Lomond, and Glencoe — the valley that tends to stay with people longest — is the scenic centerpiece of the day.
Hotel: De Bonart Naples Curio Collection by Hilton
Two nights with the city tour and the Pompeii and Vesuvius excursion. Pompeii with a guide — the forum, the baths, the Villa of the Mysteries — gives the site a narrative coherence that solo exploration can't provide. The Spaccanapoli and the street food fill the Naples evenings honestly.
Hotel: NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi
One night in the converted convent above the town. The position — clifftop terrace, coast stretching in both directions, the sea below — makes this the most atmospheric single address of the whole trip.
Hotel: Hotel Gardenia Sorrento
Two nights near Sorrento with the nearby coastal towns and the Bay of Naples views across to Vesuvius. The ferry from Sorrento to Capri takes about twenty-five minutes and is the right approach to the island — arriving at the Marina Grande from the water, with the Faraglioni visible to the south, is the correct introduction.
Hotel: Grecotel Plaza Beach House
Four nights with the beaches, the Venetian harbor and old town, and time to let the pace settle. The jeep safari into the Cretan interior — the mountain villages, the olive groves, the local wine and olive oil traditions — earns its own full day and reveals the island at its most honest.
The best time to visit these countries depends on your preferences and what you plan to do. The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are generally recommended for pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Summer is ideal for beaches, but expect more visitors and higher prices.
