The Shetland Islands have an oceanic climate with mild temperatures and frequent rainfall. Winters stay relatively mild, while summers are cool. Spring runs from March through May, bringing gradually longer days. In summer, from June to August, temperatures rarely rise above 59°F (15°C), but daylight lasts well into the evening. From September to November, the weather turns cooler and daylight hours shorten. Winter offers the best chance to see the Northern Lights, although conditions can be unpredictable throughout the year.

The main travel season in Shetland is usually from around June to August, the summer months when the weather is at its mildest and the days are longest. This is the best time to make the most of the days on Shetland to explore the island on road trips and hikes. The best time to go hiking in Shetland is from May to September - especially June, July and August, when the weather is mildest and the days are longest. In July and August, however, it can get a little crowded on the island due to the summer vacations. As a general rule, the weather can change quickly on the Shetland Islands, even in summer. It is advisable to keep an eye on the forecast and bring a rain jacket.
