Geneva as a three-night base with Chamonix and Annecy as day excursions is what makes this route work logistically. The full alpine chapter without any accommodation changes in the mountains. Lyon's single night is precisely calibrated; the traboules and a proper Lyonnaise bouchon dinner are both achievable without the pace stalling before Nice. On the Eze and Monaco excursion, time Eze for late afternoon. The day-trip crowds thin, and the light on the Mediterranean from that clifftop is the strongest image of the entire Riviera leg.

Geneva to Lyon to Nice — three cities, seven days, and a route that moves from the Swiss Alps to the Côte d'Azur in a sequence that shifts both the light and the temperature with every leg. The Chamonix and Mont Blanc excursion sets the alpine scale early, which makes the Mediterranean arrival in Nice feel like a genuine change of world.
The Monaco, Monte Carlo, and Èze excursion from Nice is the strongest day on the coast. What I always tell people about Èze: take the Chemin de Nietzsche footpath down from the village to Èze-sur-Mer rather than the road. The path takes about an hour, the views over the Mediterranean the entire way down are exceptional, and arriving at the seaside at the end of it is one of the more satisfying moments of the whole trip.
Hotel: Hôtel Bristol Genève
Three nights gives you the Chamonix and Mont Blanc day, the Annecy excursion, and time to walk Geneva's Old Town and waterfront at an unhurried pace. Annecy is one of the most photogenic towns in the French Alps — the canals through the old town, the château above, and the lake at the foot of the mountains give it a setting that consistently surprises first-time visitors.
Hotel: Globe and Cecil Hotel
One night covers the UNESCO-listed old town, the traboules cutting through the Renaissance buildings of the Presqu'île, and a dinner in a bouchon lyonnais. The food at a proper bouchon — quenelles, tablier de sapeur, tarte aux pralines — tells you more about Lyon's character than any museum would.
Hotel: Hôtel Suisse Nice
Two nights on the Riviera with the Monaco, Monte Carlo, and Èze excursion on one day and the old town, the Promenade des Anglais, and the Cours Saleya market on the other. The Hôtel Suisse sits above the waterfront with the sea directly below, and the terrace view on the first morning is the right introduction to the coast.
