A one-week trip to Zurich starts at about $2,600 per person, excluding flights. Zurich is usually the most expensive stop on a Swiss itinerary, mainly because of hotel rates. For costs across the rest of the country, see our Switzerland travel cost guide. This mid-range estimate works out to roughly $375 per person per day. It covers a 4* hotel in the Old Town or Seefeld, a lunch special and a restaurant dinner, a 24-hour transport ticket, and entry to the Kunsthaus and the Swiss National Museum.
On a tighter budget, plan on about $190 per day. That covers a 2–3* hotel in Zurich West, bakery breakfasts, street food, a day ticket for the trams, and free swims in the lake or the city’s river baths. For a luxury stay, plan on $900+ per person per day. That includes a 5* lakeside hotel, tasting menus, a private guide, and first-class train travel to the Alps.

Round-trip economy fares from New York (JFK) to Zurich (ZRH) typically start at $650–$1,050, including one checked bag up to 50 lb (23 kg) and a carry-on. The eastbound flight takes about seven and a half hours, and several US and Swiss airlines fly the route nonstop.
Fares peak in July and August, around Christmas, and during the February ski season. Late spring and early fall usually bring better prices. Zurich is also a natural starting point for a rail journey through the country. Our 7-day Switzerland itinerary by train continues to the Alps and Lake Geneva.
| Round-Trip Flight from JFK to ZRH | Average Price per Person |
|---|---|
| Economy Class | Starting at $650 |
| Premium Economy | Starting at $1400 |
| Business Class | Starting at $3500 |
The above fares are taken from major US airline websites and refer to 2-week trips with a maximum departure date of one year in advance.
Prices for a 4* hotel in Zurich start at about $250 per person per night. You can also stay in a 2–3* hotel from around $130. Rates rise during major trade fairs and conferences, in the week of the World Economic Forum in January, and in summer. Weekends are often cheaper than weekdays, since much of the demand comes from business travelers.
At the top end, the Baur au Lac, The Dolder Grand, and La Réserve Eden au Lac regularly charge $1,200+ per night for a standard room. Entry-level 5* hotels start at around $550 per person.
Location shapes your stay as much as star rating does. The Old Town (Niederdorf) puts most sights within walking distance. Seefeld is quieter and close to the lake. Zurich West, the former industrial district, usually offers the best value, with a lively bar and restaurant scene. If you’re still deciding how long to stay, read how many days to spend in Zurich.
| Hotel Category | Average Price per Person/Day |
|---|---|
| 2-3* | Starting at $130 |
| 4* | Starting at $250 |
| 5* + Luxury Hotels | Starting at $550 |
Please note that the costs quoted are average prices for overnight stays in a single or double room for one person. All prices come from one of the leading booking platforms and refer to accommodation with a good rating (at least 8/10).

Guided tours in Zurich typically cost $40–$100 per person. That covers an Old Town walking tour, a chocolate tasting, or a guided visit to the Kunsthaus.
Tickets to the main sights cost $6–$30. The Kunsthaus, home to one of Switzerland’s leading art collections, costs about $30. The Swiss National Museum is about $16, and the Lindt Home of Chocolate is about $20. Climbing the Grossmünster’s tower costs about $6 and gives you a clear view over the rooftops and the lake.
The Zurich Card costs about $36 for 24 hours. It covers public transport, including trips to and from the airport, plus free or reduced entry to many museums. It pays off if you visit two museums in a day.
Many of Zurich’s best experiences are free or close to it. Walk up to the Lindenhof for the view over the Limmat, ride the train up the Uetliberg for about $12, or take a short lake cruise from Bürkliplatz. For a fully private day, a three-hour guide starts at around $350 per group.

Zurich’s public transport is famously punctual, and trams reach almost every corner of the city. A one-hour ticket for the city zone costs about $6, and a 24-hour ticket costs about $12. The airport sits outside the city zone, so the train to Zürich HB requires a three-zone ticket for about $9. The ride takes around 10 minutes.
Taxis are expensive. Expect $60–$85 from the airport and $30–$50 for a short ride across town. For day trips, trains to Lucerne cost $40–$70 round trip, depending on how early you book.
You won’t need a car in Zurich, where parking is scarce and costly. A rental only makes sense for remote mountain regions, at $80–$125 per day for a small car in peak season.

Expect to pay $45–$60 for Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, veal in a creamy mushroom sauce served with rösti. A cheese fondue costs $35–$50 per person, and a three-course dinner with wine costs $100–$160. Weekday lunch specials (Mittagsmenü) cost $25–$35 and are the best value in town.
Quick bites are where Zurich gets more affordable. A bratwurst with bread from a grill stand costs $9–$12. A small box of Luxemburgerli, the city’s bite-size macarons, costs $12–$15. Coffee runs $6–$7, a draft beer $9–$11, and a glass of Swiss wine $10–$14.
Service is included in Swiss restaurant prices, so tipping is optional. Most locals round up or leave 5–10% for good service. Tasting menus at Michelin-starred restaurants start at around $250. Dinner usually starts from 6:30pm, earlier than in southern Europe.
