Camogli's harbor is the stop that distinguishes this route from any standard Italian cities circuit, and it's the one I always fight to keep when schedule pressure builds. The pastel trompe-l'oeil facades, the fishing boats on the pebble beach, and the absence of international tourist infrastructure combine to deliver a Ligurian coastal village that the Cinque Terre's reputation has made structurally impossible to replicate. The Cinque Terre trail from Levanto earns its full value when you reach Monterosso before 10am and walk south through Vernazza; the afternoon boat back from Manarola delivers the coast from the water before returning north. For the Florence cooking class, place it on the second evening after a day of walking the historic center: arriving in the kitchen with market and street food context makes the pasta technique land as a continuation of what you've been observing rather than an isolated activity.

Day 1 - 2
Florence, the beautiful capital of the Italian region Tuscany, lies in the center of the country. A small city with a big heart, and an even bigger offering of artistic and historical treasures. For centuries, travelers have journeyed to the birthplace of the Renaissance era to marvel at the many masterpieces of architecture and art: Michelangelo's iconic David, the impressive works of Botticelli, the Uffizi Gallery (packed with works by Caravaggio and Da Vinci), and of course, Brunelleschi's remarkable dome — the religious centerpiece of Florence that dominates the skyline. All are absolute must-sees on any itinerary. Once you've ticked off these renowned attractions, you can take a stroll through the vast Boboli Gardens or climb the hill to the church of San Miniato al Monte for a breathtaking view of this beautiful, enchanting city.

This is a Small group course for food lovers that is held in the ancient city centre. This is how one can find out about Tuscan and Florentine culture by being taught some of its celebrated food & wine traditions. On this course you can learn to cook aclassic Tuscan meal, prepared with seasonal and organic ingredients. In a top class cookery school you will be able to make a four-course meal (starter, first course, second course and dessert) under the expert guidance of a multilingual chef. The course will be followed by dinner with the dishes you have prepared, accompanied by a good Tuscan wine and a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Day 3 - 4
Venice is a small, unique city in Italy’s Veneto region, a historic center made up of 118 small islands in a lagoon of the Adriatic Sea, connected by a complex network of canals and footbridges. The stately palaces and ancient churches remain as fascinating reminders of what was once a major trading hub between Europe and the Orient. From the famous Gothic Doge’s Palace and the breathtaking St. Mark’s Basilica to the awe-inspiring brilliance of Titian’s Assumption altarpiece lighting up an entire cathedral, Venice has remained virtually unchanged for the past 600 years. Other must-see attractions include the Bridge of Sighs, the spectacular Peggy Guggenheim Collection (art gallery), the captivating Gallerie dell’Accademia (museum), and of course, gondola rides along the canals.

An unforgettable tour not to be missed! Discover Venice aboard a gondola! The best way to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of a city built on water is on board a gondola. As you glide through the canals of Venice, you will discover the magnificent palaces, churches, bridges, gardens and warehouses that line the city's fluid streets as the sun sets and bathes all the sights in a magical light. Embarking is possible from one of the following gondola stations: Danieli, Dogana, or Vallaresso, Bauer. Ideal for photographers.
MEETING POINT BETWEEN THE TWO COLUMNS IN PIAZZA SAN MARCO Only for Tours after 6pm (from Nov - Mar) and after 7pm (from Apr - Oct) - For earlier tours please check other tour in system "Venice - Gondola Ride & Venetian Lagoon (Daytime)"
Day 5 - 6
Situated in the Veneto region of northern Italy, the city of Verona is a romantic gem that lives up to its literary fame. It’s no wonder Shakespeare chose this enchanting place as the backdrop for Romeo and Juliet. Travelers come to see Juliet’s iconic balcony and experience the city’s dreamy, timeless atmosphere. Unlike its more crowded neighbor Venice, Verona maintains a calm, relaxed pace. The city’s architectural treasures include the incredible 2,000-year-old Roman Arena, which hosts an acclaimed summer opera festival. Baroque façades, stately palazzos, and cobblestone alleys are home to museums packed with historical and artistic treasures. Verona also boasts stylish boutiques and outstanding restaurants serving some of Italy’s finest cuisine.

Day 7 - 8
The vibrant metropolis of Milan is the capital of Italy’s Lombardy region in northern Italy. Always at the forefront of international fashion, Milan’s sleek, glamorous facade has earned it a reputation for superficiality and excessive consumerism. However, beneath the surface lies a treasure trove of historical and architectural wonders—from its magnificent Gothic churches, Baroque mansions, and Art Nouveau palazzos to the striking modern skyscrapers of the Porta Nuova financial district. Must-see landmarks include the spectacular Milan Cathedral (Duomo), the glass-vaulted Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and of course, La Scala—one of the world’s most renowned opera houses. Milan offers something for everyone: those in search of high-end designer shopping will be more than satisfied, as will visitors interested in fascinating historical sites and extraordinary architectural achievements.

Enjoy a private guided tour of Milan, led by your expert guide, and explore the city’s most iconic landmarks. Your experience begins with hotel pickup if your accommodation is located in the central area; otherwise, a convenient meeting point will be communicated. Start your adventure with a visit to the magnificent Duomo di Milano, where you will not only admire the stunning interior of this Gothic masterpiece but also have the chance to ascend to the terraces. With a ride in the elevator, you will reach the top for panoramic views of Milan, offering an unforgettable perspective of the city and the cathedral itself. The tour continues with external visits to the Sforza Castle, Colonne di San Lorenzo, and the famous Scala Opera House, among other important landmarks. Explore Milan’s rich history and culture as your guide shares fascinating insights along the way.
Starting time: 9:30 am approx.
Day 9
Genoa is the capital of Italy’s scenic, crescent-shaped Liguria region and sits on the Mediterranean coast known as the “Italian Riviera.” This vibrant port city is quintessential Italy, offering candy-colored seaside villas, sweeping coastal views, and a deep maritime history. Grab a gelato and stroll along the waterfront, watch fishing boats bob in the marina, and explore the maze of cobblestoned alleyways. The city is dotted with medieval treasures and brimming with flavorful local seafood. Don’t miss historic highlights like the ancient 12th-century Porta Soprana gate—said to be near the birthplace of Christopher Columbus—the striking Piazza de Ferrari with its grand bronze fountain, and the majestic black-and-white-striped Cathedral of Saint Lawrence.

Day 10
Favourably situated on the western side of a wonderful nature reserve on the picturesque peninsula of Portofino on the Italian Riviera, rests the lovely little Italian fishing village of Camogli. Charles Dickens once famously referred to the town as “the saltiest, roughest, most piratical little place”! While the town is certainly still predominantly a salty-aired fishing village, it has managed to smooth out its rough edges to reveal its underlying potential as one of the most charming and attractive little resort towns in the area. With its quaint, highly-stacked and vivaciously-painted houses, numerous harbourside bars and its refreshingly laidback locals, this tranquil sunbathed fishing village is an ideal spot for travellers seeking a perfect combination of relaxation, culture, seaside fun and some sumptuous Italian culinary delights.

Day 11 - 12
Sestri Levante is situated on the northwest coast of Italy in Liguria. This lovely seaside town, with roots that stretch back to ancient times, offers travellers a range of outdoor attractions and historic sights. A long coastline made up of two bays, the Bay of Silence and the Bay of Tales, which both offer sandy-pebble beaches with amenities for sunbathers, shallow waters for swimmers and promenades lined by cafes, ice-cream parlours and shops. The old town, lies between the two bays, where history enthusiasts will relish religious attractions such as the 17th-century Basilica of Saint Mary of Nazareth (home to numerous Baroque paintings), the remains of the 1500s Church of St. Catherine and the 12th-century Chiesa di San Nicolo Dell’isola; and heritage monuments like the 17th-century Sestri Town Hall; and the Palazzo Durazzo-Pallavicini.

Day 13 - 16
Levanto is located on the northwest coast of Italy in Liguria. This town, on the Ligurian Sea, draws outdoor enthusiasts and also has historic charm. Known as a fantastic base from which to explore the Cinque Terre National park (and its ensconced villages), Levanto draws nature lovers who will relish the eco-tourism in this UNESCO listed cultural landscape. Active travellers will enjoy hiking and cycling tracks in the forested hills behind the town, swimming, surfing and diving in the ocean, as well as a number of local sports amenities including tennis courts. Levanto has retained its historical charm, with sights like a 13th-century castle, a well-preserved bell tower and city wall; numerous religious sites such as the Ligurian Gothic Church of Sant’Andrea and the 11th-century San Siro Church; and the UNESCO listed Piazza della Loggia.

Florence, Venice, Verona, and Milan occupy the first eight days, and then the pickup of the rental car in Genoa shifts the trip into a completely different register. The Ligurian coast between Camogli and Levanto is the part of this itinerary that most surprises people. By the time you reach the Cinque Terre from Levanto, you've moved through the full range of what Northern Italy offers in two weeks — and the final days feel genuinely earned.
Levanto as the base for Cinque Terre rather than one of the five villages themselves is the right editorial choice. The town has a real beach, working restaurants, and a local life that runs independently of the tourist circuit next door. The Cinque Terre is an eight-minute train ride from the station — close enough to visit, far enough to escape.
Hotel: B&B Hotel Firenze Pitti Palace al Ponte Vecchio
Two nights with the museums, the cooking class with dinner, and time in the historic center. The B&B Hotel Firenze Pitti Palace al Ponte Vecchio sits on the Oltrarno side of the Arno, which gives the evening walks a residential quality that the streets nearest the Uffizi don't provide.
Hotel: Hotel Ca' D'Oro
The Ca' D'Oro is a historic palazzo on the Grand Canal, and the guided walking tour, gondola ride, and Murano and Burano excursion cover the city's main ground across two days. For the gondola, request the back canals east of the Rialto rather than the Grand Canal — the experience is more intimate and the pace genuinely unhurried.
Hotel: Hotel Indigo Verona Grand Hotel Des Arts
Two nights in Verona rewards the city properly. The Roman Arena fills a morning, Juliet's House and the surrounding piazzas an afternoon, and the backstreets behind the Piazza Bra an evening. The Piazza Bra with a table outside and the arena in front of you is one of those Italian outdoor experiences that earns the detour from any angle.
Hotel: Hotel nhow Milano
The Hotel nhow Milano sits on the Navigli canal — a neighborhood that shows you a side of the city the Duomo and the Galleria don't. Two nights with the guided city tour on one day and the canal district, the Brera neighborhood, and the Sant'Ambrogio basilica on the other.
Hotel: NH Genova Centro Hotel
Genoa is where the trip changes character. The historic center — the caruggi, the old port, the Palazzo dei Rolli — is genuinely compelling and significantly less visited than it deserves. One night is enough to eat well and orient yourself: the Genoese pesto, focaccia, and farinata are things the city does better than anywhere else, and the rental car is ready for the coastal drive the following morning.
Hotel: Sublimis Boutique Hotel
Camogli holds its character without performing it. The harbor, the stacked pastel buildings, the fishing boats — a slow afternoon walking the waterfront and climbing the headland above for views back along the coast is the right introduction to the Ligurian pace.
Hotel: Hotel Miramare
Sestri Levante sits on a narrow peninsula with a bay on each side — the Baia del Silenzio to the west is the one worth your time: a small, arced beach with a handful of fishing boats and almost no commerce. Two nights at the Hotel Miramare gives you the coast at its most considered pace.
Hotel: Affittacamere Sapore di Mare Levanto
Three nights with the Cinque Terre accessible by train and the beach and the town streets filling the days in between. My go-to recommendation: take the train into Vernazza or Corniglia on a weekday morning and walk the coastal path back toward Levanto in the afternoon, when the light is coming from the west. The villages are genuinely beautiful — considerably more so without the summer crowd around them.
The best time for a Northern Italy road trip is during the spring (April–June) and fall (September–October). These seasons offer pleasant weather, making them ideal for driving and exploring cities like Milan and Venice without the intense heat and heavy crowds of summer.
The average cost for a week-long trip to Italy, excluding flights, is about $1,700 per person. A mid-range budget, which covers a 4-star hotel and a rental car, is approximately $240 per day. For a budget trip, you can expect to spend about $115 per day, covering 2-3 star hotels and public transportation.
A road trip through Northern Italy is a blend of cultural exploration and scenic beauty. Highlights include the canals of Venice, the Milan Cathedral, and the Cinque Terre coastline. For activities, you can go on a Vespa tour through Tuscany, visit the famous opera house in Verona, or take a cooking class in Bologna.
Since this is a road trip, having a rental car is the best way to explore the diverse regions at your own pace. While in the cities, you can visit local markets like Milan’s Mercato Isola for an authentic experience. For a truly unique moment, consider a Bacaro tour in Venice to mingle with the locals.

Italy trip
We are once again very satisfied with Tourlane and the collaboration with Ms. Calabrese. She provided me with detailed information and prepared and organized the Italy trip excellently. Happy to book again 😊
It was a very nice trip and overall we are very satisfied. The Tourlane navigation could be a bit more precise. All the hotels were very good 👍 It was a wonderful time that we would happily repeat again and again.
We were interested in a round trip through Italy and shortly after our inquiry we already received an appointment for a consultation. The conversation with our Italy expert, Lara Schmidt, was simply great. She not only took all our wishes into account, but also rightly advised against one or two locations because of the weather/season. Shortly afterwards we received our offer (route, hotels, rental car), and what can we say — we got a perfectly arranged trip that really included and even exceeded all our wishes. That’s why we confirmed the trip with Lara directly in the next call and are super excited. @Lara: A BIG THANK YOU for the great exchange — you do this with so much heart and en...
Lara has organized my IT Trip for summer with my family. She had some many great ideas and provided so much information about the different regions. I´m really looking forward! Thank you Lara :-)
