Guimarães, also known as the "cradle of Portugal" due to its age, impresses with its well-preserved historic city center. No wonder it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the imposing Castelo de Guimarães from the 10th century, the Palácio dos Duques de Bragança and in the city's representative squares, you can experience the historical significance at first hand. From the city hill Monte da Penha you can enjoy the best view of Guimarães and the surrounding area.
Évora in the Alentejo region is rich in historical sites. These include the Roman temple, also known as the Templo de Diana, the cathedral and university as well as the eerily beautiful Capela dos Ossos bone chapel.
The city and the region are also famous for cork production. So stock up on a special souvenir. In the restaurants you can sample the simple but delicious cuisine of the Alentejo and, above all, the famous regional wines.
The well-preserved city wall, which you can explore from above, the medieval center and the castle, which towers over the city, bear witness to an important past.
The castle also offers a beautiful view over the Alqueva reservoir. Typical of Monsaraz are the Casas Pintadas with their colorfully decorated walls. Incidentally, the town is known for its low air pollution, perfect for a night-time view of the sky.
It is advisable to plan at least three to five days for a city trip to Portugal. This allows you to fully experience the cultural highlights, culinary delights and unique flair of the city without feeling rushed. For larger cities such as Lisbon or Porto, a week can also be a good idea.
In Portugal, the most efficient way to travel between cities is by train or bus. The train offers fast connections, especially between large cities such as Lisbon and Porto. Buses are a good alternative for more remote areas. Rental cars offer flexibility, but are more expensive and require navigation in unfamiliar areas.
For a city trip to Portugal, you should pack light, comfortable clothing, ideally in layers for changeable weather. Don't forget good sun protection, comfortable shoes for sightseeing, sunglasses and a small rucksack for day trips. A charger for your electronic devices is also essential.
In Portugal's cities, you can visit historical sights such as the Torre de Belém in Lisbon, stroll through the charming alleyways of Porto, enjoy pastéis de nata in local cafés and experience the vibrant culture in the old towns. For the more adventurous, surfing or diving on the breathtaking coasts is a must. In some Portuguese cities, you can also play excellent golf.
In Portugal, cities are generally considered safe, especially in comparison to other major European cities. Crime rates are relatively low and the police presence is effective. However, as in any city, tourists should watch out for pickpockets and petty scams, especially in busy tourist areas.
Lisbon and Porto often top the list of the most expensive cities in Portugal. Both offer a wealth of cultural attractions and culinary delights, which is reflected in higher prices for accommodation, restaurants and leisure activities. The cities in the Algarve, known for their stunning beaches, can also be quite expensive in high season.
