Windsor Castle

Explore the rich history of Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest continuously occupied castle in the world. The beloved family home of Britain's monarchs for nearly a millennium, this iconic fortress has a royal legacy and cultural significance.

Today, Windsor Castle is one of the official residences of His Majesty the King and offers a captivating insight into the centuries-old royal heritage. Immerse yourself in the timeless charm and historic appeal of this extraordinary landmark, within whose majestic walls the pages of history unfold.

Windsor Castle and the State Apartments

The 10.5-hectare castle offers visitors a varied day trip, including a visit to the magnificent State Apartments and St. George's Chapel. The castle's state apartments feature some of the finest works from the royal collection, reflecting the changing tastes of the castle's royal residents, particularly those of Charles II and George IV.

The masterpieces on display include paintings by Holbein, Rubens and Van Dyck, Sèvres porcelain and fine English and French furniture. Many of the works of art are still in the historic locations for which they were originally collected or commissioned by the kings and queens who lived in Windsor.

Visitors can tour the castle on their own with a free multimedia tour. During the winter months, visitors can also tour the magnificent Semi-State Apartments*, which served as George IV's private apartments in the 19th century.

St. St. George's Chapel

Situated within the grounds of Windsor Castle, St. George's Chapel is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England. Construction of the current chapel began in 1475 during the reign of Edward IV. When visiting, be sure to look up and admire the stone ceiling added by Henry VII.

The chapel has been the venue for many royal weddings, including TRH The Earl and Countess of Wessex, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and HRH Princess Eugenie and Mr. Jack Brooksbank.

The chapel is the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter, Britain's highest order of chivalry, founded by Edward in 1348 III.

The chapel contains the tombs of 11 monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth II, George VI, Henry VIII and Charles I.

Changing of the Guard Ceremony

The Changing of the Guard Ceremony, a colorful spectacle that takes place on certain mornings, is a typically British spectacle with pomp and pageantry. At this ceremonial handover, guard duties are exchanged between two groups of the Household Division, one of Britain's finest military units.

The guards resplendent in their distinctive red tunics and bearskin hats in a spectacle that should definitely be on the agenda when visiting Windsor Castle.

Shakespeare's Birthplace

Visit Shakespeare's Birthplace - William Shakespeare's childhood home in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon. Hear stories from Shakespeare's family life and get up close to objects from the Trust's world-class collections as you discover how the extraordinary playwright continues to shape our lives today.John Shakespeare - William's father - lived and worked in the house now known as Shakespeare's birthplace. John married Mary Arden in about 1557 and William was born in 1564, the third of their eight children.

In 1568, John became mayor of Stratford, the city's highest elected office. Due to his father's status as mayor, William was privileged to attend the local high school to begin his education. In 1582, at the age of 18, William married Anne Hathaway. The young couple continued to live with their parents in their birthplace. Her own children Susanna, Judith and Hamnet were born here.

John Shakespeare died in 1601 and William inherited the house as the eldest surviving son. William leased the small two-room cottage next to the main house to his sister Joan Hart. The remainder of the family home was also leased out and converted into an inn called the Maidenhead.

It was later renamed the Swan and Maidenhead Inn, which remained in operation until 1847. When Shakespeare died in 1616, he left the estate to his elder daughter Susanna, and when she died, she left it to her only child, Elizabeth. Although she married twice, Elizabeth had no children. When she died in 1670, the house passed to a descendant of Joan Hart.

The Hart family owned the property until 1806, when it was sold to Thomas Court, a butcher. After the death of Court's widow, the entire property was put up for sale in 1846.

To save the building where William Shakespeare was born, a public campaign was launched, supported by Charles Dickens. The property was auctioned off by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in 1847 for £3,000. We've been taking care of it ever since.

Really very good from start to finish. I was a little skeptical at first, but I immediately felt that I was in very good hands. The consultants take a lot of time, respond to individual wishes and implement the desired goal excellently. All documents are available and can be viewed at any time, so there is always transparency from the outset. If there are any challenges, there is always someone available and working on a solution. I couldn't have planned it any better or cheaper myself. In the event of small mishaps that can happen on the trip, the local circumstances are responsible and not the travel planners, who themselves then provide support.

The professionalism, friendliness and helpfulness of our consultant as well as the appealing form of presentation never fails to impress, especially because it is so easy to share all the planning steps with the whole family. Since I've known Tourlane, I honestly wouldn't set foot in a local travel agency again. It's not only a huge time saver, it's simply timely. Thank you!
