Staying at the Parador de Toledo above the Tagus gorge rather than inside the city walls is the decision that defines this itinerary: the terrace at dusk, old city lit across the river bend, cathedral tower above the roofline. That view is unavailable from any hotel within the medieval perimeter. Sequence the Cathedral, the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, and the Mosque del Cristo de la Luz on the same morning; all three buildings occupy the same compact grid, and moving between them on foot makes the city's layered occupation tangible rather than abstract. Salamanca's Plaza Mayor at 7pm when the evening light turns the sandstone from gold to amber is the image the city holds back until that hour.

Day 1 - 2
Spain’s enormous central capital, Madrid, lies on the River Manzanares and is a city of contrasts. Historical monuments like the impressive Royal Palace stand in stark contrast to state-of-the-art skyscrapers; masterpieces by Picasso, Dali and Velazquez adorn the walls of the city’s world-class galleries alongside contemporary modern works; local chefs display a passion for Spanish food at traditional eateries while chic fusion restaurants operate next door. Madrid’s real attraction lies in the seductive lifestyle of its hedonistic inhabitants; indulging in tapas, hunting for treasures at the El Rastro flea market or partying the night away in one of the many lively nightclubs. Make sure to soak up the vibrant street life of the grand, historic Plaza Mayor, Madrid's central square, and spend a leisurely afternoon on the landscaped lawns at the Parque del Buen Retiro.

Flamenco, a lively mixture of dance, song and guitar, is the heart and soul of Spain. It has developed alongside the contrasting historical influences of Arab, Jewish and gypsy cultures. Ava Gardner or Hemingway, they all loved flamenco. In this show you will enjoy the best pure flamenco in a mythical place in Madrid. Experience how heart, soul and the artists' total dedication to their craft is what it's all about.
Day 3
Perched majestically on a hill above the plains of Castilla-La Mancha, overlooking the Tagus River, Toledo is an ancient city in central Spain’s province of the same name. Once dubbed the ‘city of the three cultures’ due to its successive Islamic, Hebrew and Christian occupants, the city now boasts an incredible legacy in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques, synagogues and traditional houses heaped into a cobble-stoned spiral. Beyond the impressive medieval walls, the maze of pedestrian streets is lined with artisan shops exhibiting pieces of jaw-dropping, masterful craft work, most notably glass pieces created using traditional glass blowing (which visitors can try themselves). The city is a prime culinary destination, as well as being home to a prolific number of museums, galleries and entertainment venues.

Day 4 - 5
Step into the historical grandeur of Salamanca, a city brimming with cultural and architectural brilliance in Castile and León. Known for its prestigious university, one of the oldest in the world, Salamanca boasts a rich tapestry of academic heritage influenced by scholars and students for centuries.
Marvel at the Plaza Mayor, one of Spain's most beautiful squares, lauded for its Baroque architecture and lively atmosphere. Wander through the streets to discover the stunning New and Old Cathedrals, whose intricate designs will leave you in awe.
Don’t miss the enchanting University of Salamanca with its ornate façade, a visual delight. Whether you’re exploring hidden corners or indulging in the city's delightful gastronomy, Salamanca radiates a warmth and wisdom that captivates every visitor, promising an unforgettable experience.

Day 6 - 7
Spain’s enormous central capital, Madrid, lies on the River Manzanares and is a city of contrasts. Madrid, Toledo, and Salamanca form a tight triangle of Spanish history, and the trains between them are fast and reliable. Two nights in Madrid to open, one in Toledo, two in Salamanca, and a return to Madrid for a final evening — the pacing is right and nothing feels forced.
What I always tell people about Salamanca: the Plaza Mayor at sunset is one of the finest public squares in Spain. The warm Castilian sandstone takes on a particular color in late afternoon that is worth timing your day around. Get a table at one of the restaurants on the square and stay until it gets dark.
Hotel: Hotel Villa Real
The Hotel Villa Real is on the Plaza de las Cortes, close to the Prado and the Cibeles fountain. Two nights is enough to cover the main landmarks and get a genuine feel for the neighborhoods. The tapas bars around La Latina in the evenings are worth building a night around.
Hotel: Parador de Toledo
The Parador de Toledo sits on the hillside opposite the old city. The view back across the Tajo gorge and the Toledo skyline from the terrace is one of the strongest arrival moments of the whole trip. The medieval streets, the Gothic cathedral, and the Alcázar fill a full day comfortably. One night here is enough — the city is best appreciated before the day visitors arrive in the morning.
Hotel: Hospes Palacio de San Esteban
The Hospes Palacio de San Esteban is a converted 16th-century convent close to the university and the old town. Two nights gives you the Plaza Mayor, the university buildings, and both cathedrals, with time left to simply sit in the city and let it settle. Salamanca has a calm confidence that rewards an unhurried stay.
Hotel: H10 Villa de la Reina
A final night at the H10 Villa de la Reina near the Paseo del Prado closes the trip in the capital. The optional flamenco show is a strong way to spend the last evening. The private airport transfer on departure day removes the final logistical decision of the trip.
The best time to travel to Madrid and Central Spain for a 7-day trip is during the spring (March–May) and fall (September–October). These seasons offer pleasant weather for exploring cities and monuments like the Palacio Real, while avoiding the extreme heat of summer.
On average, a week-long trip to Spain, excluding flights, costs about $1,400 per person. A mid-range budget of around $200 per day covers a stay in a 4-star hotel, dining at good restaurants, and a rental car. A budget-friendly trip starts at approximately $80 per day.
A trip to Madrid and Central Spain is a journey through history and art. Highlights include the Royal Palace in Madrid, Salamanca's Plaza Mayor, and the historic city of Toledo. For activities, you can take a tapas tour in Madrid with a local guide or explore the historic cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
