The Vatican and Trastevere together make a strong second day: the Sistine Chapel in the morning, and the neighborhood south of the Tiber in the evening, which is the most lived-in part of the city and the most rewarding for a slow dinner. What I always tell people about the Uffizi in Florence: book the skip-the-line entry before you travel and arrive at opening. The Botticelli rooms before 10 a.m., with space to stand still and actually look, are one of the great museum experiences in Italy.
