The Cinque Terre full-day excursion from Milan is the day that tends to stay with people longest. The five villages on their cliffs above the Ligurian Sea, with the coastal path connecting them, are one of those Italian experiences that photographs suggest but don't fully explain. What I always tell people: take the train from Monterosso to Riomaggiore early in the morning and walk the path back northward — the light is coming from the right direction and the villages are still quiet.
Day 1–2: Rome
