The Bernina Express is the day I always build this itinerary toward. The UNESCO-listed red train crosses the Brusio spiral viaduct and reaches the Bernina Pass at 2,253 meters before descending to St. Moritz, and no road alternative comes close to replicating that sequence of landscape and engineering. For the Piedmont culinary excursion, a sit-down tasting at a family domaine in Barolo or Barbaresco territory earns more than covering multiple appellations quickly; the wine in its own landscape, with the nebbiolo vines on the hillside outside the window, is the version that stays with you. Lake Como from Varenna by ferry to Bellagio rather than by road from Como means the villa gardens arrive by water approach, and that lakefront composition is the image the excursion has been building toward.

Day 1 - 5
The vibrant metropolis of Milan is the capital of Italy’s Lombardy region in northern Italy. Always at the forefront of international fashion, Milan’s sleek, glamorous facade has earned it a reputation for superficiality and excessive consumerism. However, beneath the surface lies a treasure trove of historical and architectural wonders—from its magnificent Gothic churches, Baroque mansions, and Art Nouveau palazzos to the striking modern skyscrapers of the Porta Nuova financial district. Must-see landmarks include the spectacular Milan Cathedral (Duomo), the glass-vaulted Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and of course, La Scala—one of the world’s most renowned opera houses. Milan offers something for everyone: those in search of high-end designer shopping will be more than satisfied, as will visitors interested in fascinating historical sites and extraordinary architectural achievements.

Enjoy a private guided tour of Milan, led by your expert guide, and explore the city’s most iconic landmarks. Your experience begins with hotel pickup if your accommodation is located in the central area; otherwise, a convenient meeting point will be communicated. Start your adventure with a visit to the magnificent Duomo di Milano, where you will not only admire the stunning interior of this Gothic masterpiece but also have the chance to ascend to the terraces. With a ride in the elevator, you will reach the top for panoramic views of Milan, offering an unforgettable perspective of the city and the cathedral itself. The tour continues with external visits to the Sforza Castle, Colonne di San Lorenzo, and the famous Scala Opera House, among other important landmarks. Explore Milan’s rich history and culture as your guide shares fascinating insights along the way.

Four nights based in Milan with day trips to Piedmont for wine, Lake Como for the water, and St. Moritz by way of the Bernina Express for the Alps — Northern Italy's most refined pleasures covered from a single base, without repacking once.
The Bernina Express is the day I always mention first when talking through this itinerary. The line climbs from Tirano near Lake Como into the Swiss Alps, crosses the Landwasser Viaduct, passes the Morteratsch Glacier, and descends to St. Moritz across a landscape that changes character every fifteen minutes. It is one of the few train journeys in Europe where the route itself is unambiguously the experience. Book early — the panorama carriages sell out.
The Piedmont culinary day is the right complement. Barolo and Barbaresco country, a private cellar visit, and the truffles and tajarin of the Langhe hills produce an afternoon that earns a full day. What I always tell people: ask your guide to include a smaller producer alongside any of the well-known estates — the conversation at a family winery is more candid, and the wines are often as good.
What is the best time to travel to Northern Italy for wine, lakes, and the Alps? Spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) are ideal for combining Milan’s city sights, Piedmont’s vineyards, and Lake Como’s scenery. These months also bring clear views for the Bernina Express ride into the Swiss Alps.
Hotels in Milan and the lakes range from $55–$90 per night for budget stays, $90–$180 for mid-range, and $180–$270+ for boutique or luxury. Meals average $15–$30 in trattorias and $50–$100 for fine dining. Activities such as vineyard tastings in Piedmont start around $50, while a Bernina Express ticket costs about $70–$100.
Milan’s Duomo and La Scala, wine experiences in Piedmont, and lakeside villas around Como are unforgettable stops. The Bernina Express through the Alps adds a scenic train journey with sweeping mountain views. Private walking tours, vineyard visits, and lake cruises make the trip even richer.

Book early for Milan’s Last Supper and Bernina Express tickets. Stay in central Milan for quick access to museums and shopping, and choose lakeside towns like Bellagio or Varenna for easy ferry connections. In Piedmont, plan tastings with a driver or guided tour.

Italy trip
We are once again very satisfied with Tourlane and the collaboration with Ms. Calabrese. She provided me with detailed information and prepared and organized the Italy trip excellently. Happy to book again 😊
It was a very nice trip and overall we are very satisfied. The Tourlane navigation could be a bit more precise. All the hotels were very good 👍 It was a wonderful time that we would happily repeat again and again.
We were interested in a round trip through Italy and shortly after our inquiry we already received an appointment for a consultation. The conversation with our Italy expert, Lara Schmidt, was simply great. She not only took all our wishes into account, but also rightly advised against one or two locations because of the weather/season. Shortly afterwards we received our offer (route, hotels, rental car), and what can we say — we got a perfectly arranged trip that really included and even exceeded all our wishes. That’s why we confirmed the trip with Lara directly in the next call and are super excited. @Lara: A BIG THANK YOU for the great exchange — you do this with so much heart and en...
Lara has organized my IT Trip for summer with my family. She had some many great ideas and provided so much information about the different regions. I´m really looking forward! Thank you Lara :-)
