Monte Sant'Angelo's sanctuary has been receiving pilgrims since the 5th century, and that antiquity is physically present in the cave chapel cut into the limestone of the Gargano hillside. The reason I designed this Rome-to-Gargano sequence as a deliberate arc is that the Vatican represents the institutional scale of Italian Catholic heritage, and the Gargano shows something older and more elemental, carved into rock rather than built around imperial ambition. For the Vatican, enter before 8am and structure your path so the Sistine Chapel comes last: the ceiling is close to undisturbed for the first twenty minutes.

Day 1 - 2
Experience Rome, the bustling capital of Italy. This city, rich with exciting history and culture, offers an unparalled mix of ancient explorations and modern living. Immerse yourself in the past and explore the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Vatican. Wander through other must-see destinations like The Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Pantheon. Experiencing the culinary scene is a delight, from traditional pasta to world-renowned Italian gelati. You can explore daily markets such as Campo de' Fiori for local ingredients and fresh food. A stay in Rome promises great experiences all year round, but it is advisable to take seasonality into account. While spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) offer pleasant weather and less crowds, summer (June–August) has a lively, spirited atmosphere — but can also be hot. No matter when you go, visiting Rome promises an unforgettable journey through the centuries. The unique combination of a rich historical past mixed into a thriving and vibrant modern community makes Italy's Eternal City one of the world's most intriguing and inspiring tourist destinations.

Take the tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel with no queue at all! No stress to access the Vatican: your professional guide will take you inside and accompany you in a memorable visit to one of the most important art collections worldwide. Admire the numerous halls of the museum, including the spiral staircase, the beautiful Raphael’s rooms and their famous paintings, before entering the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo’s masterpiece. On your way out from the Sistine Chapel, you will go inside St. Peter’s Basilica through an exclusive access skipping long lines. The tour wouldn’t be complete without a walk in St. Peter’s Square, the open space before the basilica, redesigned by G. L. Bernini, an architectural masterpiece of the Baroque age. Your day continues with a visit of Castel Sant’Angelo, originally built as the tomb of Roman Emperor Hadrian, was later converted into a military fortress, the Pope’s residence, a Renaissance-era prison, and then finally into a museum to preserve the history of Rome. Built in 135 AD, the castle now houses Hadrian’s tomb, Papal apartments, and several magnificent works of art including paintings, sculptures, pottery, frescoes, murals, and more. Choose this tour if you would like to enjoy a professional guided tour to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and Castel Sant’Angelo with skip the line access thanks to a special agreement we have. Tour ends at Castel Sant’Angelo area.
Starting time: 9:30 AM approx.
Day 3 - 4
Gargano, a vast highland sub-region on the ‘Spur’ of Italy’s boot, lies in the Foggia province of Apulia. Offering an alluring mix of breathtaking natural scenery, fascinating heritage and excellent seaside resorts, the area is a wonderful place to spend a holiday. Active types can look forward to hiking majestic mountains swathed in dense pine woodlands, olive picking among fertile groves, breathing in the magnificent ‘land of orchids’ and exploring the striking white limestone coastline, decorated with gorgeous soft-sanded beaches. Much of these landscapes fall under the watchful eye of the Gargano National Park. Delve into local culture with a visit to one of the numerous medieval towns, filled with extraordinary castles and cathedrals, or hop over to the indulgent tropical delights of the Tremiti Islands.

Two nights in Rome, two on the Gargano Peninsula, and a final night back in the capital — a trip that gives Italy's spiritual heritage genuine space rather than treating it as a footnote to the main sightseeing circuit. The Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica are well-served by the Rome section, and the Castel Sant'Angelo as a companion visit adds real historical texture. The views from the top across the Tiber and back toward St. Peter's are among the best in the city.
The Gargano is where this itinerary earns its distinctiveness. The peninsula on the Adriatic coast — Monte Sant'Angelo, the Sanctuary of San Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo, the forest of the Foresta Umbra — is one of the most significant pilgrimage regions in Italy and one of the least visited by international travelers. The landscape is remote, the atmosphere genuinely different from anywhere on the tourist circuit, and the coastline around the Gargano National Park is striking in its own right. My go-to recommendation: take an early morning walk through Vieste's old town before the day heats up — the white limestone lanes above the Adriatic are one of the more quietly beautiful things the region offers.
The best time to travel for a spiritual tour of Italy is during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. These seasons offer a perfect balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds, which is ideal for visiting sacred sites in Rome and Gargano.
On average, a week-long trip to Italy, excluding flights, is about $1,700 per person. This mid-range budget is a good estimate for a spiritual tour, covering a stay in a 4-star hotel and popular activities. A budget-friendly trip starts at approximately $115 per day.
A spiritual tour in Italy is a journey through sacred places and cultural treasures. Highlights include the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, and the religious traditions of the Gargano region. For activities, you can explore the ancient underground sites of Rome or take a walk to experience local markets.
Booking tickets for major religious sites like the Vatican Museums in advance is highly recommended to avoid long waits. When traveling between cities, using the train network can be a convenient option. To experience the local culture, visit a traditional market or try local specialties.

Italy trip
We are once again very satisfied with Tourlane and the collaboration with Ms. Calabrese. She provided me with detailed information and prepared and organized the Italy trip excellently. Happy to book again 😊
It was a very nice trip and overall we are very satisfied. The Tourlane navigation could be a bit more precise. All the hotels were very good 👍 It was a wonderful time that we would happily repeat again and again.
We were interested in a round trip through Italy and shortly after our inquiry we already received an appointment for a consultation. The conversation with our Italy expert, Lara Schmidt, was simply great. She not only took all our wishes into account, but also rightly advised against one or two locations because of the weather/season. Shortly afterwards we received our offer (route, hotels, rental car), and what can we say — we got a perfectly arranged trip that really included and even exceeded all our wishes. That’s why we confirmed the trip with Lara directly in the next call and are super excited. @Lara: A BIG THANK YOU for the great exchange — you do this with so much heart and en...
Lara has organized my IT Trip for summer with my family. She had some many great ideas and provided so much information about the different regions. I´m really looking forward! Thank you Lara :-)
