Three nights in Sorrento rather than trying to stay on the coastal road is the logistical call that keeps the Amalfi chapter functional, and it's the accommodation decision I'd always make. The morning boat to Capri before the ferry crowds and the approach to Positano from the water are both achievable from Sorrento in a way they aren't from farther east along the corniche. Pompeii works best entering through Porta Marina before 9am and moving immediately toward the residential Regio VI district and the House of the Vettii before doubling back to the Forum; the domestic interiors in that quieter hour carry the site's human scale far more effectively than the civic monuments. For Rome on arrival, the Trastevere evening walk belongs at the end of the first day: the medieval street grid, the basilica facade lit after dark, and the trattoria terraces opening onto quiet streets after 8pm give you a version of the city no daytime monument visit reaches.
