What I always tell people about the Accademia Gallery: arrive at opening on a weekday and you will have the David room to yourself for the first twenty minutes. The statue is 17 feet tall and lit from above — its scale only registers when you are standing in front of it without a crowd blocking the sight lines. The Siena and San Gimignano excursion is the strongest day out of the city: Siena's Piazza del Campo and the medieval towers of San Gimignano rising on the ridge above the Val d'Elsa each have a visual quality that no description prepares you for. The Pisa and Lucca combination on the final day is a well-considered pairing — the Piazza dei Miracoli in the morning and Lucca's intact Renaissance walls, best cycled rather than walked, in the afternoon.
