Nafplio is a picturesque little town on the eastern Peloponnese. Particularly striking here is the Palamidi castle complex, which was built by the Venetians in the 17th century. The ascent requires some effort with its 999 steps, but you will be rewarded with a great sight and a magnificent view.
With Akronafplia and Bourtzi, which is located on an island, Nafplio also has two other fortresses to visit.
Monemvasia impresses with its unique panorama and fascinating history. The town was an important fortress during the Byzantine Empire. Monemvasia was built on a rock jutting out into the sea.
In the upper town, you will find an unforgettable view and numerous ancient ruins, while the Byzantine church of Hagia Sofia is well preserved. In the lower town, you can stroll through enchanting medieval alleyways and try a glass of the town's delicious wine.
Parga is a wonderful seaside resort that also boasts magnificent architecture. While the scent of the surrounding lemon and orange plantations fills the air, set off to explore the castles and bays of Parga.
For example, visit the Venetian castle, built in 1,570 and located on a green hill. The small chapel on the offshore island of Panagia is also a great photo opportunity.
A city break in Greece can hardly be enjoyed in a hurry. To really experience the diversity of Athens, the charm of Thessaloniki and the historical splendor of cities such as Corinth or Rhodes, you should plan at least a week. Each city has its own treasures to discover.
In Greece, the best way to travel between cities is by bus or train, or by domestic flight for longer distances. The bus network is extensive and also connects smaller towns, while trains are a comfortable alternative for main routes. Ferries are ideal for island hopping.
For a city trip to Greece, you should pack light, airy clothing and comfortable shoes for the cobbled streets. Sunglasses and sun cream are essential to protect yourself from the strong Mediterranean sun. Don't forget your passport and, if necessary, important medication. A hat or cap offers additional protection from the sun.
A fascinating mix of ancient history and vibrant culture awaits you in Greece's cities. Visit historical sites, stroll through charming old towns and enjoy excellent Greek cuisine. For the adventurous, coastal towns offer excellent diving opportunities, while the diverse landscape promises ideal conditions for hiking.
Greek cities are generally considered safe for travelers. However, as in any big city, you should take care of your personal belongings and be careful in unfamiliar areas, especially at night. The hospitality of the locals and a relaxed atmosphere contribute to general safety.
Among the most expensive cities in Greece are Athens, the vibrant capital with its rich history, and Mykonos, known for its luxurious nightlife and picturesque beaches. Santorini, famous for its breathtaking sunsets and exclusive accommodation, is also one of the more expensive destinations.
The Greek capital Athens attracts visitors with its thousands of years of history. The most famous sight here, the Acropolis, is evidence of this. But there are also many other highlights, such as one of the most important archaeological museums in the world.
Chania awaits you in Crete. Enjoy an authentic Greek meal with a view of the medieval Venetian harbor, which is overlooked by a 16th century lighthouse. Then stroll through the pretty alleyways of the old town.
In Heraklion, the largest city in Crete, the archaeological museum is a must for history buffs. Also interesting are the traces of the Venetian era, such as the city walls, the harbor and the loggia. The ancient palace of Knossos is just a few minutes away.
The port city of Thessaloniki welcomes you with its landmark, the White Tower, built in 1,535. From there, you can stroll along the waterfront promenade, which is home to several of the city's many themed gardens. Thessaloniki also has many historical sites.
The port of Piraeus lies off the coast of Athens. Beautiful buildings such as the neoclassical city theater or the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity await you there. Next to the Archaeological Museum you will find an ancient theater that is more than 2,000 years old.
Corfu Town is characterized by cobblestone streets and pastel-coloured Venetian houses. The cityscape has been influenced by cultural influences from all over Europe. The two impressive fortresses from the 16th century, which offer a great view over the city, are a must-see.
Kavala is a wonderful place to combine sightseeing with beach relaxation. Top attractions include the castle, the harbor promenade and the well-preserved aqueduct. The sea in Kavala is ideal for swimming and water sports.
Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the present come together in Rhodes Town. Walk along the Byzantine city wall to the impressive 14th century Grand Master's Palace. This is connected to the archaeological museum by the iconic Knights' Street. Not far away is the bustling Socrates Street.
