Milos sets the right tone for the whole island chain: the boat trip around the coastline covers sea caves, volcanic formations, and the Sarakiniko beach from the water at a scale no road offers, and it establishes a visual benchmark the Naxos and Paros legs keep building on. What distinguishes this Cyclades routing from most is that it leads with the least internationally known island and builds toward the most famous one, which means Santorini arrives as a conclusion rather than an opening act. The Naxos food tour earns most when you carry it directly into lunch at one of the market tavernas the guide introduces; the transition from walking tour to table is more natural than treating them as two separate morning experiences.

Continue past the Zappeion and the Temple of Olympian Zeus before arriving at the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, explore the Propylaea, the monumental entrance blending Doric and Ionic architecture, the small Temple of Athena Nike perched on a rocky outcrop protecting the citadel gate, and, of course, the Parthenon and the Erechtheion with its famous Porch of the Maidens.

The Meteora day trip from Athens is what separates this from a standard island-hopping circuit. Going north first — to monasteries balanced on rock columns above the Thessaly plain — and then returning to the coast gives the trip a different sense of Greece's range. The island sequence that follows moves well: Milos is distinctive and far less visited than the more famous Cycladic names, Naxos is authentic and generous in scale, Paros is relaxed, and Santorini closes on a high note.
Milos is the standout addition for anyone who has already done Mykonos and Santorini. The island's volcanic coastline produces some of the most varied formations in the Aegean — colored cliffs, sea caves, and the extraordinary white pumice landscape at Sarakiniko. A full day around the island by boat is the right way to take it in.
Hotel: The Athenian Callirhoe Exclusive Hotel
The Acropolis guided tour and the Cape Sounion afternoon excursion fill the first two days well. The Temple of Poseidon above the Aegean in late afternoon light is one of the more memorable single experiences within reach of Athens. The Meteora day trip takes a full day and an early start, but it earns both. Visiting two or three monasteries rather than all six gives the experience the pace it deserves.
Hotel: Melian Boutique Hotel & Spa
A full day around Milos by boat reveals the island's geology in a way that no land-based itinerary can match. The sea caves, the colored rock stacks, and Sarakiniko — which looks nothing like any other beach in the Mediterranean — are all accessible from the water. The local villages above the coast reward an evening drive.
Hotel: Porto Naxos Hotel
The sea kayak sunset trip around the Portara — the ancient marble gate standing at the entrance to the harbor — is one of the more distinctive ways to experience Naxos, and I always recommend it to first-time visitors. The food tour through Naxos Town covers the island's own cheeses, citrus liqueur, and volcanic potatoes. Naxos produces more of its own food than any other island in the Cyclades, and the tour makes that tangible.
Hotel: St. Andreas Sea Side Resort
The cruise around Antiparos and Despotiko gives you the coastline from the water. Naoussa on the north coast is the most characterful village on Paros and rewards an afternoon and evening at the harbor without any particular plan.
Hotel: Aressana Spa Hotel & Suites
Three nights in Fira gives the island proper room. The cruise with winery visit and Oia sunset is best placed on the second day. Santorini's volcanic-soil Assyrtiko — grown in low basket vines and producing a mineral character unlike anything else in the Cyclades — makes the winery stop more than a scenic detour. For the Oia sunset, take the path toward the Byzantine castle ruins rather than the main viewpoint; the crowd thins fast once you leave the obvious spot.
Hotel: The Athenian Callirhoe Exclusive Hotel
A final evening in Athens before departure. The Koukaki and Plaka neighborhoods, after days on the islands, feel like returning to a city you already know well enough to enjoy without a plan.
For this extensive itinerary that covers both the mainland and the islands, the shoulder seasons of late spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are ideal. You will enjoy excellent weather for exploring the ancient sites in Athens and the monasteries of Meteora, while the Cyclades islands will be warm with fewer crowds than in high summer.
The overall cost of this trip is highly dependent on your travel style, as it covers both the Greek mainland and more exclusive islands like Santorini. Generally, a comfortable, mid-range week-long trip to Greece starts at approximately $1,100, excluding international flights. Budgeting for higher costs in popular destinations like Santorini is recommended.
The key highlights of this journey include exploring the historical heart of Athens, culminating at the Acropolis, and witnessing the dramatic, cliff-top monasteries of Meteora. For the islands, don't miss a boat tour of Milos's sea caves and beaches, a wine tasting in Santorini, or trying watersports like kayaking on Naxos and Paros.
When visiting the monasteries of Meteora, be sure to wear clothing that respects the local customs, often requiring shoulders and knees to be covered. For island hopping, factor in potential ferry delays caused by high winds, especially during the Meltemi season, and always book your ferry tickets in advance, particularly for the longer journeys between Milos and the other Cyclades.

Island hopping Cyclades Islands
We took a trip with tourlane in May 2024. We came across tourlane by chance. We went island hopping in the Greek Cyclades with a flight and organized transfer from island to island by ferry and private transfer to the hotels. Everything was perfectly organized and planned.

Island hopping Greece

Hello dear Tourlane Team!

Family trip to Greece
We had Tourlane plan a vacation with island hopping in Greece. Rental cars on every island, interesting hotels plus ferries and domestic flights. It was great how such a package was put together from our wishes. We are now looking forward to our vacation. Highly recommended.
Greece ISLAND HOPPING START: Athens, then we took the ferry to Paros, 4 days later to Naxos and finally 3 days to Santorini! You were so great! The island hopping went really well thanks to you! From cab, ferry to 3-star hotel, the whole organization! EVERYTHING TOP! And booking the trip was also super easy! I just want to say thank you, it was the best 14 days for a long time
We planned and carried out a family trip with Tourane. The entire planning went smoothly and all our wishes were taken into account.
