The Antirrio ferry crossing is the moment this road trip changes character: twenty minutes on the water with the suspension bridge above and the Peloponnese opening ahead gives the mainland arc a natural hinge the motorway tunnel version simply doesn't provide. Thessaloniki's food scene deserves a proper evening; the Ladadika mezze tavernas and the Modiano market stalls are distinctly Macedonian rather than Athenian, and the difference is worth sitting down for. For Sithonia, drive the road south of Neos Marmaras toward Kalamitsi and Toroni: pine forest, small coves, almost no tourist infrastructure. The quietest stretch on the entire itinerary.

Day 1 - 3
Dominating the Attica region of Greece, the country’s capital, Athens, is one of the oldest cities in the world. For over two and a half centuries, the astonishing Greek temples and monuments of Athens have continued to intrigue and amaze visitors from around the world. This icon of western civilization seamlessly combines ancient history with modern architecture and a surprisingly lively atmosphere. This is particularly apparent in areas at the foot of the Acropolis, Anafiotika, Plaka, Monastiraki, and Thissio where visitors will find numerous extraordinary Neoclassical buildings, trendy and traditional cafes, and shops, and narrow winding streets with historical treasures at every turn. Once you have enjoyed a history and art fix, try some mouth-watering Greek cuisine at one of the city’s fine local restaurants before indulging in the insatiable nightlife at the chic cocktail bars and waterfront dance clubs.

Entrance Ticket for the Acropolis´Museum. Valid for the booked time slot +/- 15 minutes.
Day 4 - 5
The small, charming port town of Nafplio is situated on the Argolic Gulf in the northeast of the Peloponnese Peninsula, just one and a half hours by car from Greece’s capital, Athens. The town is known for its remarkably scenic location, overlooking a picturesque harbour and presided over by two medieval castles, including the spectacular Palamidi fortress. At the centre of Nafplio’s historical Old Town lies the large, marble-paved Syntagma Square, lined with quaint cafes and featuring the Arsenal, a stately building occupied by a fascinating museum. At the other end of the square, a historic mosque now occasionally functions as a cinema. Nafplio serves as a popular weekend getaway for Athenians eager to escape the big tourist crowds of the city and enjoy Nafplio’s excellent restaurants, boutique shops, impressive architecture, quayside cafes, fine beaches and old-world atmosphere.

The archaeological site of Epidaurus, located in the northeastern Peloponnese of Greece, was an important center of healing dedicated to the god Asclepius. It was renowned throughout the ancient world for its sanctuary and therapeutic practices. The site also features a magnificent theater, celebrated for its exceptional acoustics and harmonious design. Epidaurus reflects the ancient Greeks’ deep connection between medicine, spirituality, and the arts.
Day 6
Kalambaka is a town in Thessaly in northern Greece, primarily known as the gateway for visiting the nearby cliff-top monasteries of Meteora. This magnificent Greek Orthodox temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, looms over the modern town and provides a fascinating insight into Greek history of the 14th to 16th centuries. There are many monasteries to visit, and many house on-site museums showcasing religious art and other historical artefacts, such as ancient manuscripts. Key monasteries include Great Meteoron, St. Stephen and Holy Trinity, which offer the best views over the town and its surrounds. The area is also renowned for rock climbing, with 170 peaks and over 600 different bolted routes to choose from.

Situated in the shade of the rocks of Meteora, Dellas Boutique Hotel in Kastraki, Kalambaka is considered as an ideal destination for discerning travellers, who wish to enrich their experiences in a unique place. The property features rooms equipped with a telephone, flat-screen TV, safe box, air-conditioning, heating and mosquito nets. Other facilities at the property include a breakfast hall, lounge with satellite TV, Wi-Fi, a bar with Fireplace and private parking.
Day 7 - 8
The port city of Thessaloniki enjoys a waterfront location at the Thermaic Gulf of Macedonia in northern Greece. This tourist favourite offers a wealth of cultural sights, vibrant cafe culture and exciting nightlife. Explore the ancient archaeological sites, including the remarkably well-preserved Roman Agora in the heart of town, the Rotunda Monument and the Arch of Galerius, among many others. The iconic architectural style of the Byzantine empire is evident throughout the city, most notably at the Agios Demetrios church and the Byzantine Baths, both protected UNESCO World Heritage sites. The White Tower - the well-preserved 16th-century structure - is the city's most emblematic landmark. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is a must-visit, as is the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Find a mix of esteemed shops and fabulous boutiques in the shopping district surrounding Tsimiski Street, or enjoy the myriad restaurants, cafeterias and nightlife on the lively seafront promenade.

Day 9 - 12
Situated in the Chalkidiki region of Northern Greece, the peninsula of Sithonia is sandwiched between the cosmopolitan city of Kassandra to the west and Mount Athos to the east. Also known as Longos, Sithonia is known for its wonderfully mild climate and offers a land of dramatic cliffs, pine forests, countless secluded coves, and over 100 pristine white-sand beaches lapped by crystal-clear turquoise waters. Visitors can enjoy a wide selection of fun-filled activities: rent a boat to explore remote and secluded beaches, cycle along the spectacular Sithonia Circuit, bike, or hike through Sithonia’s magnificent mountains. The crystalline waters of the Aegean Sea are perfect for diving, snorkelling and swimming. History and culture enthusiasts should make sure to visit the traditional villages of Parthenonas and Palia Nikiti.

Athens north through the Peloponnese, then up to Meteora, east to Thessaloniki, and finally the Sithonia coast in Chalkidiki — this route covers a version of Greece that most island-focused trips never touch. The mainland is more varied than its reputation suggests, and driving it yourself is the only way to feel that properly.
Three nights in Sithonia at the close is the right call. After ten days of ancient sites and Byzantine churches, arriving at the Amyntas Seafront Hotel on the Aegean coast with no fixed agenda is a well-earned finish.
Hotel: The Athenian Callirhoe Exclusive Hotel
Three nights at the Athenian Callirhoe in Koukaki gives you a well-positioned base south of the Acropolis hill. The walking tour and the Acropolis Museum on day one, the Cape Sounion sunset excursion on day two — the Temple of Poseidon above the sea at that hour is a very specific kind of memorable — and time in Plaka and Monastiraki on day three gives Athens its proper due before the driving begins.
Hotel: 3Sixty Hotel & Suites
Leave Athens early and the drive to Nafplio becomes a full day of archaeology. Mycenae's Lion Gate and the shaft graves put you in front of Bronze Age Greece in a way that no museum fully replicates. The theater at Epidaurus still demonstrates its acoustics on every visit: drop a coin in the center of the orchestra and listen from the upper seats. Nafplio at the end of that day is a genuine reward.
Hotel: Dellas Boutique Hotel
Meteora resists description. Monasteries built on top of freestanding rock columns above the Thessaly plain — the scale only becomes clear when you're standing at the base looking up. What I always tell people: visit two or three monasteries rather than all six. The experience is better when it isn't rushed. Stay for the sunset over the rocks from the viewpoint above Kalambaka.
Hotel: Anatolia Hotel
Thessaloniki is the most underrated city in Greece. The Byzantine churches — Hagia Sophia, the Rotunda, Hagios Demetrios — cover a chapter of Greek history that Athens doesn't. The Ladadika district and the waterfront have some of the best food in the country. Two nights is enough to walk the White Tower promenade, cover the main landmarks, and eat well enough to understand why Thessalonians are quietly convinced their city has it over Athens.
Hotel: Amyntas Seafront Hotel
Sithonia is the quietest and least developed of Chalkidiki's three coastal peninsulas, and that is precisely its appeal. The Amyntas Seafront Hotel sits directly on the water. Three nights here means you can spend one day doing nothing more directed than finding a beach and returning to it. The smaller coves along the eastern coast, reachable by unpaved road, are worth the effort — the water clarity is exceptional, and the pines come almost to the shoreline.
The optimal time for a road trip covering Athens, the Peloponnese, Meteora, Thessaloniki, and Chalkidiki is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). This allows you to explore ancient ruins and cities under pleasant weather conditions, avoiding the intense summer heat while still enjoying warm beaches in Chalkidiki.
Since this itinerary focuses on the Greek mainland, costs tend to be lower than extensive island hopping. A budget-friendly trip starts at approximately $65 per day, excluding the costs for the rental car, fuel, and tolls. For a more comfortable, mid-range experience, a week-long stay starts at around $1,100.
The highlights blend historical depth with spectacular scenery. Be sure to explore the ancient theater of Epidaurus near Nafplio, climb up to the dramatic, cliff-top Meteora monasteries, and enjoy the pristine, secluded beaches on the Sithonia Peninsula in Chalkidiki.
Always be prepared to pay tolls on the major highways, and make sure your rental car is suited for the longer distances and varying road types. When visiting sacred sites like the Meteora monasteries, always wear appropriate clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.

Island hopping Cyclades Islands
We took a trip with tourlane in May 2024. We came across tourlane by chance. We went island hopping in the Greek Cyclades with a flight and organized transfer from island to island by ferry and private transfer to the hotels. Everything was perfectly organized and planned.
