Meteora earns more when you split the monasteries across morning and afternoon rather than rushing all six in a circuit: Great Meteoron and Varlaam in low morning valley light, then Roussanou when the first groups have cleared. Cape Sounion is better at morning than at sunset despite every recommendation to the contrary; you share the clifftop with far fewer people and the temple reads clearly without the late-afternoon crowd. For Mycenae, reach the Lion Gate before 9am and start at the Treasury of Atreus; it's almost always quiet at that hour, and the acoustic test at Epidaurus works best once the school groups have cleared the lower seats.

Day 1 - 5
Dominating the Attica region of Greece, the country’s capital, Athens, is one of the oldest cities in the world. For over two and a half centuries, the astonishing Greek temples and monuments of Athens have continued to intrigue and amaze visitors from around the world. This icon of western civilization seamlessly combines ancient history with modern architecture and a surprisingly lively atmosphere. This is particularly apparent in areas at the foot of the Acropolis, Anafiotika, Plaka, Monastiraki, and Thissio where visitors will find numerous extraordinary Neoclassical buildings, trendy and traditional cafes, and shops, and narrow winding streets with historical treasures at every turn. Once you have enjoyed a history and art fix, try some mouth-watering Greek cuisine at one of the city’s fine local restaurants before indulging in the insatiable nightlife at the chic cocktail bars and waterfront dance clubs.

Short on time but want to see everything that Athens has to offer? We know how to get you around all the ‘must see’ sites and sights. Our Athens city tour takes you to the most important sites of the historic capital. The Panathenaic Stadium was the site of the first Olympic Games of modern times in 1896. The Prime Minister's residence (ex. Royal Palace) is guarded by the Evzones in their colorful uniform. The Temple of Olympian Zeus,Hadrian's Arch, Parliament, and the memorial to the Unknown Soldier, the Academy, the University, the National Library, and Omonia Square. We make a short stop at each place. Of course, we can’t leave out the Acropolis, home to the Architectural Masterpieces of the Golden Age of Athens: The Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and ‘the harmony between material and spirit’, the monument that ‘puts the order in the mind’, the Parthenon and the Theatre of Dionysus'. Concluding the tour, we will visit the new Acropolis Museum and admire the wonders of the classical era.

Four nights in Athens with the Achilleas Hotel as your base gives this week considerably more range than a typical city break. The Acropolis, the museum, and the neighborhoods around Plaka and Monastiraki are the foundation — substantial enough on their own — but the three curated day trips are what give the itinerary its real reach.
Athens here works as a genuine base rather than just a starting point. The Cape Sounion sunset excursion is one of the most memorable single experiences available within easy reach of the city: the Temple of Poseidon at the edge of the promontory, with the Aegean below on three sides, is a different kind of ancient site than anything within the capital, and the light at that hour is worth the drive south on its own. The Peloponnese day — Epidaurus, Mycenae, and Nafplio — asks for an early start, but the ancient theater at Epidaurus and the citadel at Mycenae together form one of the most compelling single-day excursions in Greece. Meteora rounds out the week with landscapes and monasteries that exist on a scale entirely their own.
One tip I always pass along for Meteora: if you can visit on a weekday rather than a weekend, the difference in atmosphere at the monasteries is significant. The cliff-top settings are extraordinary regardless, but arriving when things are quieter allows the place to register at the level it genuinely deserves.
Custom holiday packages and trips that fit your budget
Itineraries built exactly to your needs
A personal English-speaking, native-European travel expert for every step
Full service assistance before, during, and after your trip
The most pleasant time to visit Athens for a city break and day trips is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) shoulder seasons. You will enjoy sunny, dry weather and avoid the intense summer heat, which makes walking around the Acropolis and the city's ancient sites much more comfortable.
Since this itinerary focuses solely on the city and its surrounding mainland day trips, costs are generally manageable. A budget-friendly trip starts at approximately $65 per day for basic expenses. For a mid-range, week-long trip to Greece, you should budget around $1,100, excluding international flights.
The core highlights include exploring the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the vibrant Plaka district. Must-do day trips include visiting the breathtaking cliff-top monasteries of Meteora, exploring the historical ruins of Mycenae and Epidaurus, and watching the sunset over the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion.
Always buy tickets for the Acropolis and other major sites online and in advance to avoid long queues, especially during peak season. Comfortable walking shoes are a must due to the uneven surfaces of historical sites, and we recommend starting your sightseeing early in the morning to beat both the heat and the crowds.

Island hopping Cyclades Islands
We took a trip with tourlane in May 2024. We came across tourlane by chance. We went island hopping in the Greek Cyclades with a flight and organized transfer from island to island by ferry and private transfer to the hotels. Everything was perfectly organized and planned.

Island hopping Greece
We had Tourlane plan a vacation with island hopping in Greece. Rental cars on every island, interesting hotels plus ferries and domestic flights. It was great how such a package was put together from our wishes. We are now looking forward to our vacation. Highly recommended.

Hello dear Tourlane Team!
Greece ISLAND HOPPING START: Athens, then we took the ferry to Paros, 4 days later to Naxos and finally 3 days to Santorini! You were so great! The island hopping went really well thanks to you! From cab, ferry to 3-star hotel, the whole organization! EVERYTHING TOP! And booking the trip was also super easy! I just want to say thank you, it was the best 14 days for a long time

Family trip to Greece
We planned and carried out a family trip with Tourane. The entire planning went smoothly and all our wishes were taken into account. What was particularly pleasant were the very well organized transfers and hotels. Everything went very smoothly so that we could concentrate on the family vacation experience. We will be happy to use the Tourlane service for future family trips.
