What I always tell people about the Athens to Santorini leg: take the speedboat transfer rather than the standard ferry. The ferry can run four to eight hours depending on the route, and arriving in Fira with the afternoon still ahead of you is well worth it.
The Porto Fira Suites sit directly on the caldera rim, and three nights there opens up time for a caldera walk, a visit to the volcanic-soil wineries around Pyrgos — where Assyrtiko grown in low basket vines produces a mineral character found nowhere else — and a sunset in Oia without any of it feeling rushed. For Oia, position yourself on the path toward the Byzantine castle rather than the crowded main viewpoint. The view is the same, and the experience is entirely different.
