Venice experiences four distinct seasons, but its maritime climate keeps winter temperatures relatively moderate, usually between 32°F and 46°F. As temperatures rise, so does the city’s humidity. For this reason, summer — when highs can reach around 82°F — can feel warm and crowded, making it a less comfortable time for extended city sightseeing. Spring and fall offer the best conditions for visiting Venice, with mild temperatures, up to six hours of sunshine, and only occasional rainfall.

Spring is a beautiful time to visit La Serenissima. Temperatures climb to around 68°F, and the city’s narrow lanes and canals shine under up to eight hours of daily sunshine. You should still expect occasional showers, but with a bit of luck, you can enjoy Venice before the heavy summer crowds arrive. Spring also brings some of the city’s most beloved annual events, making it an especially rewarding season to explore.

During the summer months from June to September, Venice can get quite hot. With up to nine hours of sunshine a day, temperatures approaching 86°F, periodic rain, and rising humidity, exploring the city can feel challenging at times. Even so, many travelers visit during this season to experience major events like Il Redentore, the Venice International Film Festival, or the Regata Storica. If you plan a summer trip to Venice, be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices.

Autumn is a wonderful season to explore the “city of a thousand bridges.” September and October are especially rewarding, with mild temperatures between 50°F and 75°F creating ideal conditions for a city trip. You can still enjoy up to six hours of sunshine a day, only occasional rainfall, and noticeably lower prices compared to summer. Fall also brings a full calendar of events, from the Regata di Burano to the Biennale and the Venice Marathon, giving you even more reasons to experience Venice at this time of year.

Thanks to the Adriatic’s maritime climate, winter temperatures in Venice remain relatively moderate. While the thermometer typically ranges between 32°F and 46°F, the city still enjoys up to five hours of sunshine a day. Rain is infrequent, which also helps keep humidity lower. If you visit Venice in winter, you can experience the spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks in St. Mark’s Square and the city’s world-famous Carnival in February. You may also benefit from lower prices during this quieter season.

Carnival: Between the end of February and the beginning of March, the Carnival in Venice delights visitors with traditional costumes, numerous traditions and lots of history.
Ballo Tiepolo: During the carnival season, numerous masked balls invite you to an unforgettable experience in Venice. One of them is the Ballo Tiepolo in Palazzo Pisani Moretta with a view of the Grand Canal.
Festival Incroci di Civilità: At the end of March, a unique literary festival takes place in Venice, where Italian and international authors present their works.
Ca' Foscari Short Film Festival: Enjoy the fantastic short film festival at the end of March.

Su e Zo per i Ponti: During this annual bridge run in April, participants can choose a route of about 3 or 5.5 miles from the Ponte della Paglia to St. Mark’s Square, crossing many of Venice’s iconic bridges along the way.
La Vogalonga: In May, up to 1,500 boats take part in this spectacular non-competitive rowing marathon. The course is nearly 19 miles, running from St. Mark’s Square to the outlying islands and back into the heart of the city.
Palio delle Repubbliche Marinare: Held in early June, this historic regatta brings together rowers to honor the maritime power Venice held during the Middle Ages. It’s a colorful, tradition-rich event celebrated each year.
Festa della Repubblica: Also in June, St. Mark’s Square hosts Venice’s Festa della Repubblica, featuring impressive military parades and celebrations marking Italy’s national holiday.

Festa del Redentore: On the third Saturday in July, the Venetians celebrate the Redentore with breathtaking fireworks over the city.
Venice International Film Festival: At the end of August, the international film festival provides ten days of entertainment in Venice.
Regata di Burano: Also in September, numerous rowing boats circumnavigate the small island of Burano in another regatta well worth seeing.
Biennale di Venezia: Every two years, Venice hosts one of the most important international art exhibitions in the castle gardens (Giardini di Castello). The event is always organized between June and November.

Venice Fashion Week: For ten days in October, up-and-coming designers showcase sustainable fashion and trends at various fashion shows in the city's palaces and galleries.
Venice Marathon: In October, the Venice Marathon is one of the city's most important sporting events.
Festa Madonna Della Salute: On November 21st of each year, the Madonna of Health is celebrated in Venice.
Ice rink on Campo San Polo: Every year in December, the ice rink on Campo San Polo creates a wintery atmosphere and a unique ambience.
New Year's Eve: A unique moment is the New Year's Eve fireworks display on St. Mark's Square on December 31st, which is celebrated by thousands of visitors.

The best time to visit Venice is during the spring months of April and May, as well as September through November in the fall. Mild temperatures between 46°F and 75°F make it easy to explore the city’s many landmarks. You’ll enjoy up to six hours of sunshine a day in both seasons and benefit from experiencing Venice in a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere outside the peak summer crowds.
These months are also ideal if you're traveling on a more limited budget. In April, you can join the annual Su e Zo per i Ponti walk and cross some of Venice’s most beautiful bridges. In September, the historic Regata Storica offers a unique glimpse into the city’s traditions. Because spring can bring occasional rain showers, be sure to pack the right layers for changing weather.
