What Should You See on The Amalfi Coast?

Get inspired by the top things to do and see in Things to do and see on the Amalfi Coast — from iconic attractions to hidden spots you won't want to miss.

UNESCO World Heritage Site Pompeii

Luftaufnahme der Ruinen von Pompeij

Pompeii is one of the main attractions on the Amalfi Coast. This is because the historic city on the coast of the Gulf of Naples was completely buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Pompeii lay buried under a thick layer of volcanic ash for over 1,500 years.

But it is precisely because of this volcanic ash that the ancient ruins of Pompeii as well as numerous situations from the lives of the city's inhabitants can still be seen in detail today. So embark on a fascinating journey of discovery into the time of the Romans, Greeks and Etruscans and explore one of the best-preserved ruins on your own.

Old Town of Amalfi

Luftaufnahme der Stadt Amalfi

Anyone visiting the Amalfi Coast should not miss a trip to the small town of the same name. The historic old town of Amalfi in particular will delight you with its charming flair and the many cozy cafés and restaurants.

Follow Via Lorenzo d'Amalfi to explore the heart of the town on foot. Pay a visit to the pretty De Cape e Ciucci fountain. Take in the lively ambience of the small harbor. And fortify yourself with one of the region's tasty delicacies in one of Amalfi's small restaurants!

Duomo di Amalfi

Aufnahme des Dom von Amalfi

A special treasure in the heart of Amalfi is undoubtedly the beautiful cathedral. The medieval Duomo di Amalfi impresses from afar with its impressive Campanian façade and countless painted tiles.

So take some time to take in the grandiose façade before climbing the imposing staircase up to the entrance gate. Then explore the huge, baroque nave with its grandiose round arches and gilded ceiling elements. And don't miss the chance to take a look at the cloister of paradise and the crypt of St. Andrew.

Promenade of Amalfi

Aufnahme der Uferpromenade von Amalfi

Instead of a snow-white sandy beach, behind the Amalfi promenade you will find a dark, spacious beach that slopes gently into the turquoise blue sea. With the colorful houses and magnificent mountains of Amalfi behind it, holidaymakers can relax and enjoy the spectacular panorama.

Simply take a relaxing stroll along the water. Soak up the sun. Or refresh yourself in the crystal-clear Mediterranean Sea. There are also various worthwhile restaurants and cafés in the immediate vicinity where you can enjoy one of the local specialties while taking in the unforgettable view of the coast.

Cimitero Monumentale di Amalfi

Aufnahme des Cimentero Monumentale

At first glance, the Cimitero Monumentale di Amalfi looks like a small town that is waiting to be discovered. The cemetery is located directly above the town and can be easily reached on foot. Simply follow the winding alleyways of the old town uphill.

And once you reach the top, marvel at the many graves of former town residents in the impressive colonnade. Stroll between the ornate family tombs and impressive gravestones. And before returning to the old town, take a moment to enjoy the fabulous view of the beautiful Amalfi Coast and the small harbor.

Fontana De Cape e Ciucci in Amalfi

Aufname der Fontana De Cape e Ciucci in Amalfi

The small De Cape e Ciucci fountain in Piazza dello Spirito Santo has long been one of the city's most important sights. While donkeys were watered here in the 18th century as they passed through Amalfi from the surrounding mountain villages, today it is the countless small figures that make the fountain one of the city's highlights!

Miniature goatherds, angels and mountain dwellers create a unique backdrop on the moss-covered stones of the fountain. On closer inspection, you can recognize numerous historical events that have shaped more than just the Amalfi Coast.

Old Town of Positano

Aufnahme der Altstadt von Postiano

Positano is picturesquely situated on the Gulf of Salerno and is the gateway to the enchanting Amalfi Coast. Here you can explore the fantastic flair of the colorful old town as well as the beautiful beaches in front of the town. How about a day of swimming at Spiaggia Fornillo or a kayak tour to explore the picturesque town from the water?

Whether for a day trip or a longer stay, Positano should not be missed during your vacation on the Amalfi Coast. Enjoy the first-class local restaurants here. Experience the dolce vita. Or go on unforgettable hikes in the fantastic surroundings, such as along the Path of the Gods!

Sentiero degli Dei Hike

Aufnahme des Sentiero degli Dei Pfades

The Path of the Gods is one of the Amalfi Coast’s most iconic hikes—a nearly 5.5-mile nature trail perched high above the coastline, perfect for adventurers and nature lovers alike. Hike from Agerola to Positano (or vice versa) and soak in breathtaking views of the dramatic cliffs, the shimmering sea, and even the distant island of Capri.

Along the way, you’ll pass terraced vineyards, rugged landscapes, and the picturesque Lattari Hills. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and take in the unforgettable scenery. After your hike, treat yourself to a delicious meal at one of Positano’s fabulous seaside restaurants—a perfect reward for a day well spent.

Medieval Salerno

Aufnahme der Stadt Salerno

Salerno already made a name for itself in the Middle Ages with one of the first medical facilities in Europe. Today, however, it is above all the historic center of the city with its early medieval palaces and the impressive cathedral, the enchanting botanical garden and the beautiful beach promenade that attract visitors to Salerno.

The Lungomare Trieste, for example, was modeled on the Côte d'Azur and creates a unique ambience with its countless tamarisks. Salerno is also worth a visit to Arechi Castle, which offers visitors an unforgettable view of the coast and the Mediterranean.

Vesuvius

Luftaufnahme des Vukans Vesuv

As one of the only two active volcanoes on mainland Europe, Mount Vesuvius is a must-visit for active travelers and outdoor enthusiasts. Rising to nearly 4,200 feet, the volcano and its surrounding national park offer a variety of hiking trails for those ready to explore this legendary landscape.

Walk across cooled lava fields and take in sweeping views of the Amalfi Coast as you ascend. Once you reach the summit, don’t miss the chance to peer over the massive crater rim—an unforgettable reminder of the mountain’s powerful history.

Historic Old Town of Ravello

Aufnahme eines Gartens in Ravello an der Amalfiküste

In picturesque Ravello, the Amalfi Coast shows itself from one of its most beautiful sides. The romantic little town lies in the middle of the mountains and offers visitors an unforgettable view of the azure blue sea and the beautiful surroundings. If you take some time to explore the historic old town, you will also be enchanted by the winding, narrow streets of Ravello, the medieval palazzi and the richly decorated Arab-Byzantine cathedral.

Finally, a detour to the impressive Villa Rufolo with its enchanting garden will not only allow you to follow in the footsteps of Richard Wagner, but also simply enjoy the magical surroundings of the Amalfi Coast.

Island of Capri

Aufnahme des Meeres vor der Insel Capri

The beautiful island of Capri has captivated visitors since the time of Ancient Rome. Whether for hiking, cycling, swimming or snorkeling, the island has an unmistakable charm and also offers a whole host of attractions.

Explore the unique Augustus Gardens, for example. Stroll past the island's magnificent palazzi and spectacular gardens. Marvel at the fascinating Faraglioni cliffs, which drop steeply into the sea. Take an unforgettable boat tour around the popular vacation island. Or explore the Blue Grotto on a guided excursion.

Grotta Azzurra

Aufnahme des Eingages der Grotta Azzurra

The Blue Grotto is one of the most iconic attractions on the island of Capri. While the entrance to this natural sea cave is just about 5 feet high, inside you’ll find a stunning chamber that stretches over 165 feet long and nearly 100 feet wide, all bathed in an ethereal blue light.

You can reach the Grotta Azzurra by boat from Marina Grande or on foot. If you choose the land route, head to Anacapri, descend the steep staircase to the entrance, and hop into one of the small rowboats waiting to guide you into this spectacular world of shimmering blue.

Limoncello di Sorrento

Aufnahme der Stadt Sorrento

A visit to Sorrento should also not be missed during your trip to the Amalfi Coast. Discover the picture-book town on a long walk through the narrow streets and the impressive Corso Italia. Visit Piazza Tasso and the medieval monastery of Sorrento with its enchanting cloister.

Enjoy the breathtaking view over the Mediterranean! Or visit one of the local farms to find out more about local agriculture, winegrowing and the cultivation of the typical limoncello from Sorrento. Afterwards, you can feast in the old town of Sorrento or relax on a day at the beach.

Boat Tour Along The Coast

Aufnahme von Booten vor der Amalfiküste

If you want to see as much of the beautiful Amalfi Coast as possible or are not staying overnight in one of the towns along the Amalfi Coast, you can join a guided boat tour and experience the impressive coastline with its picturesque towns from the water. Benefit from the insider tips of an experienced guide to experience the highlights of this popular vacation region up close.

Stop off at some of the most popular places in the coastal region. Refresh yourself in the crystal-clear Mediterranean Sea and enjoy Italy's fantastic gastronomy over an unforgettable lunch or first-class dinner.
