As the second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia has a lot to offer its many visitors. Lively coastal towns such as Cagliari or Alghero, dream beaches such as those on La Maddalena, luxurious coastal resorts such as Porto Cervo and unique natural treasures such as the enchanting Neptune Grotto, as well as exceptional hiking routes.
If you decide to travel to Sardinia, you can easily combine a beach, relaxation and active vacation. Here we show you which highlights you should not miss during your stay on this multifaceted island.
For many travelers, a vacation in Sardinia begins in the relaxed capital of Cagliari. Take the opportunity to explore the historic old town, the Roman amphitheater, the impressive Cathedral of Santa Maria di Castello or the Basilica of Nostra Signora di Bonaria.
If you also climb the wide staircase up to the Bastione di Saint Remy, you will be rewarded with a fabulous view of the azure blue sea and the small Poetto beach. You should also definitely plan a visit to the local markets to sample some of the best Sardinian specialties on the spot.
La Maddalena is an absolute highlight, especially for divers and snorkelers. The 62 small islands that make up La Maddalena are located exactly between Corsica and Sardinia and boast a breathtaking underwater world.
Plunge into the crystal-clear waters and explore the colorful corals up close. Or relax on one of the region's beautiful beaches. Afterwards, you can take your time to reflect on your new sensory impressions in one of La Maddalena's many cozy cafés.
The north-east of Sardinia is undoubtedly one of the most popular vacation regions and offers something for every taste. In particular, holidaymakers who want to experience Sardinian luxury up close alongside the beautiful sandy beaches and turquoise waters off the Costa Smeralda should visit Porto Cervo.
Enjoy the sight of the countless sailing boats and yachts in the harbor. Treat yourself to a glass of wine or one of the delicious local specialties in one of the many restaurants. Or simply take a relaxing stroll through the maritime seaside resort.
One of the most exciting coastal towns on the island awaits you on the north-west coast of Sardinia. The former Catalan enclave of Alghero not only boasts a beautiful medieval town center full of cosy cafés and small boutiques, but also an attractive mix of architectural culture and first-class arts and crafts.
Experience the unique atmosphere of Alghero. Marvel at the impressive city walls. Enjoy one of the typical fish and seafood dishes at the traditional harbor. Or visit the Anghelu Ruiu archaeological site (with sufficient sun protection) to learn more about the history and development of the region.
Not far from Alghero, the almost two-million-year-old Neptune Grotto delights visitors with its breathtaking stalactite formations. So it's no wonder that the steep cliffs of Capo Caccia have long been one of the most popular sights on the island.
So don't miss the opportunity to take a boat trip to the impressive stalactite cave when the sea is calm. Or climb down the 654 steps to the almost four-kilometre-long rock cave to experience the countless stalagmites and stalactites in the ancient grotto up close. An excursion to the Neptune's Grotto is also ideal for families with small children!
Would you like to combine a relaxing day at the beach with a unique hike? Then you should make your way to Cala Goloritze. This picturesque bay is a nature reserve and can only be reached on foot or by boat.
After a hike of just under 1.5 hours, a spectacular backdrop of small pebbles, turquoise blue sea and fantastic rock formations awaits you here, leaving you in no doubt as to why Cala Goloritze is one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia. This Sardinian paradise also impresses with its wonderful tranquillity, guaranteeing that vacation feeling.
The charming small town of Bosa is particularly popular with families with young children. While the coastal town in the north-west of Sardinia has plenty of flair, a cozy town center and fantastic surroundings, the sandy beach of Bosa is considered one of the best seaside resorts on the island.
Once you have had your fill of swimming and sunbathing here, you can enjoy a delicious meal and a glass of local wine in one of the many restaurants. Or you can hike to the old castle complex of Castello Malaspina for a wonderful view over the old town!
In Barumini, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Su Nuraxi invites you to discover and marvel. While experts estimate the date of origin of the impressive tower buildings and settlement ruins to be the late Bronze Age (1330 - 1250 BC), the imposing complex was only uncovered in the 1950s.
Today, Su Nuraxi is considered one of the most important archaeological excavation sites in Sardinia and allows visitors to marvel at the ruins and remains of a former settlement as well as be inspired by the almost 3,000-year-old craftsmanship on display here.
In addition to Su Nuraxi, Tharros is one of the most important archaeological sites in Sardinia.
The oldest finds of the ancient ruined city date back to the 13th century BC and offer visitors an exciting insight into the development history of the region, which was settled by the Romans as well as the Carthaginians, Byzantines and Vandals. So go on a journey through time and visit the remains of the ancient Acropolis to learn more about the city and its inhabitants.
Between Cagliari and Olbia, the inconspicuous fishing village of Arbatax attracts visitors with one of the most spectacular natural backdrops on the Mediterranean island. Although the surrounding mountain landscape and picturesque coastline create an enchanting panorama, it is above all the porphyry rocks that attract visitors to Arbatax.
Especially at sunset, the rugged volcanic rocks seem to glow red and cast the region in a dreamlike light. In particular, holidaymakers who want to explore Sardinia off the beaten track should not miss out on a visit to Arbatax.
At the northernmost tip of Sardinia is the picturesque Capo Testa peninsula, which invites you to enjoy a special kind of vacation. Let yourself be enchanted by the azure blue sea, the green meadows and the snow-white granite rocks.
Discover the beautiful beaches and unique bays for a fantastic summer vacation. Or explore the beautiful natural surroundings on long walks. How about a relaxed discovery tour to the old lighthouse, for example, to admire the centuries-old rock formations from above or to enjoy Sardinia's fantastic coastal landscape in peace and quiet?
Secluded beaches and untouched nature await you in the southwest of Sardinia, far from the crowds. While the region remains largely undeveloped for tourism, it’s one of the best places to experience Sardinia’s natural treasures up close.
Wander through sand dunes rising up to 130 feet high. Take long walks along miles of pristine sandy beaches. Or explore one of the nearby nature reserves and discover the rich flora and fauna that make Sardinia so special. However you choose to experience it, the Costa Verde reveals one of Sardinia’s most authentic and breathtaking sides.
In the south of Sardinia, the ancient town of Nora invites visitors on an unforgettable journey through time. While the southern part of the island is gradually sinking into the Mediterranean, today you can admire the remains of centuries-old Phoenician, Punic and Roman settlements.
Take a stroll through the ancient theater, for example, which was only uncovered in 1889. Visit the remains of the historic temple complex or marvel at the beautiful private villas with their unique mosaics, which make Nora a real gem.
Castelsardo is without doubt one of the most beautiful places in Sardinia. The breathtaking view of the Gulf of Asinara, the medieval town center with its countless staircases and narrow alleyways as well as its unmistakable flair make a visit to this northern Sardinian coastal town a very special experience.
So don't miss the opportunity to explore the town center at your leisure. Visit the Castello di Doria and the cathedral of Castelsardo and simply enjoy La Dolce Vita against this impressive backdrop.
Holidaymakers who want to explore more than just the wonderful towns and breathtaking coastal landscape in Sardinia should visit the beautiful Supramonte mountains.
Here, 38 fabulous hiking routes invite you to explore the island's unique nature. Or you can take the opportunity to explore the fantastic passes, gorges and peaks by mountain bike. Whatever you choose, the Supramonte mountains with the spectacular Orientale Sarda winding road or the Golgo plateau are a must for outdoor fans and active sports enthusiasts.
