What is a must-see in Tuscany?

Get inspired by the top things to do and see in Tuscany — from iconic attractions to hidden spots you won't want to miss.

Old Town of Florence

Panoramic view of the Piazza del Duomo and the old town of Florence, Italy

On a trip to Tuscany, a visit to the historic old town of Florence is a must. So don't miss the opportunity to experience one of the world's most important cultural capitals up close. Plan enough time to visit the city's countless museums, art galleries, including the Uffizi Gallery, and attractions such as the Palazzo Vecchio or the fabulous Boboli Gardens. Let the medieval alleyways guide you through the picturesque old town. Or use Florence as a starting point to visit other highlights of the region such as Siena, Pisa or San Gimignano.

Old Town of Siena

Picturesque view of Siena from above

Just 70 kilometers from the provincial capital of Florence, another Tuscan gem awaits you in Siena. However, even the journey to the picturesque city is worthwhile. To reach the lively student city, you will pass through some of the most beautiful countryside in Tuscany, full of olive groves, vineyards and charming villages. Once you arrive, the medieval city center with the huge semicircular Piazza del Campo, where the famous horse race Il Palio takes place, the historic quarters and the imposing Gothic cathedral are particularly impressive. The bell tower, which is over 100 meters high , and the city's countless historic buildings also provide a breathtaking backdrop. It is therefore not surprising that Siena is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Monastery Ruins of San Galgano

San Galgano: The old abbey of San Galgano is a wonderful example of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany. Chiusdino, Siena, Italy.

Just half an hour's drive from Siena, the remains of the Gothic monastery of San Galgano stand out in the landscape. Only on closer inspection do you notice that the medieval walls no longer have a roof. However, a visit to the beautiful ancient walls is all the more impressive. So take some time to explore one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country. And then take the opportunity to visit the nearby Cappella di Monte Siepi. The 12th century sword stuck in the rock here is said to have inspired the world-famous Arthurian legend.

San Gimignano

San Gimignano in Tuscany and the Italian countryside

Almost exactly halfway between Florence and Siena, an unforgettable panorama awaits you in San Gimignano. The medieval town is not only surrounded by a beautiful hilly landscape, but is also bursting with Italian flair. So don't hesitate to cross the imposing town walls to explore the winding alleyways of the town at your leisure. Visit the Piazza del Duomo. Or enjoy perhaps the best ice cream in the world at Gelateria Dondoli in Piazza della Cisterna. Even if you lose track of time and orientation with all that on offer, you will quickly find your way again with the help of the 13 huge towers of San Gimignano.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

Leaning Tower of Pisa

As one of Italy's most famous landmarks, the Leaning Tower of Pisa captivates thousands of travelers year after year. So don't miss out on a visit to the cathedral square with the world-famous tower. Climb the 294 sloping steps to the top to enjoy an unforgettable view over the city. And then set off to explore the other sights of Pisa. A visit to the beautiful Piazza dei Cavalieri or a relaxing stroll along the Arno in the early evening are particularly worthwhile.

Val d'Orcia

View of the Val d'Orcia, Tuscany, Italy

It is not without reason that the beautiful Orcia Valley is Tuscany's preferred flagship. After all, exceptionally beautiful hilly landscapes, charming mountain villages such as Montalcino, Pienza and San Quirico d'Orcia and the cypress trees typical of Italy provide a remarkable backdrop. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Val d'Orcia is considered a highlight above all by connoisseurs and wine connoisseurs. Whether at an agriturismo, on one of the many vineyards or in the authentic restaurants - there is hardly any way around La Dolce Vita here. So treat yourself to a glass of Brunello di Montalcino. And sample local delicacies such as olive oil, game or truffles.

Old town of Lucca

Aerial view of Lucca on a sunny afternoon, Tuscany, Italy

Once a major trading hub in medieval Europe, Lucca still enchants visitors today with its beautifully preserved old town and timeless charm. For a unique view of the city, head up to the top of its historic 40-foot city walls, which double as a scenic walking and biking path circling the entire center.

For an even higher perspective, climb the Palazzo Guinigi’s iconic tower—rising over 130 feet—where a rooftop garden rewards you with sweeping views across Lucca’s red-tiled rooftops. After exploring the city’s elegant piazzas and centuries-old façades, find a cozy spot at one of the many cafés or restaurants and soak in the lively rhythm of local life.

Historical Vinci

Vinci Italy

Follow in the footsteps of the polymath Leonardo da Vinci in Vinci and enjoy Tuscany a little off the beaten track. Without the usual tourist groups, you can experience this magical region from one of its most beautiful sides! Whether you visit the house where the artist was born, the permanent da Vinci exhibition in the medieval castle or one of the cozy trattorias - the idyllic village is sure to delight you. What's more, the surrounding area with its sensational vineyards and olive groves is perfect for unforgettable cycling or hiking tours.

Thermal springs of Saturnia

Saturnia Thermal Springs in Italy

Just under 60 miles south of Florence, the natural thermal springs of Saturnia offer the perfect place to relax and unwind in the heart of Tuscany. Don’t be put off by the strong scent of sulfur—the experience is well worth it. The scenic Gorello waterfalls flow into a series of terraced pools where you can soak in warm, mineral-rich water at a soothing 98.6°F.

Pick a cozy spot near the historic watermill and let the natural setting work its magic. You can even enjoy a nighttime dip under the stars. And if you’re looking for a longer escape, there’s a luxury wellness hotel located right next to the springs—ideal for turning your visit into a rejuvenating getaway.

Old Town of Pitigliano

Old town Pitigliano Tuscany, Italy

Pitigliano is just a stone's throw away from the Saturnia springs. The rust-brown town sits enthroned on an impressive tuff rock and exudes plenty of flair. Be sure to explore the fairytale old town of Pitigliano. Follow the winding, narrow alleyways to one of the lively squares and take some time to observe the colorful hustle and bustle. Finally, you can go on various excursions from Pitigliano to explore the surrounding area. Highlights not to be missed are the rocky town of Sorano or the mountain village of Sovana.

Fortress of Monteriggioni

Aerial view of the old Tuscan town of Monteriggioni

Travel back in time and visit the monumental fortress of Monteriggioni. While an impressive medieval festival brings times long past to life here in July, the majestic fortifications are worth a visit all year round. The imposing fortified towers and perfectly preserved medieval town center alone are enough to make visitors revel. A visit to Monteriggioni is also an excellent opportunity to explore the surrounding wine region. How about a relaxing stay in one of the charming agriturismo accommodations, for example?

Wine landscapes of Chianti

Green hills of the vineyard in the Chianti region, Tuscany, Italy

Chianti is not only known among wine connoisseurs as one of the best wine-growing regions in Italy . Active vacationers are also increasingly drawn to the beautiful region to explore the breathtaking wine landscapes, picturesque villages and medieval castles up close. Discover the heart of Tuscany. Visit traditional villages such as Radda or Greve by bike. Visit the Chianti Sculpture Park in Pievasciata. Take part in the grape harvest and treat yourself to a glass of the world-famous red wine. Or enjoy the historic procession in Panzano in spring.

Garfagnana mountain landscape

Bridge of the Devil or Ponte della Maddalena in Garfagnana. Tuscany, Italy

If you’re looking to head for the hills during your time in Tuscany, the Garfagnana mountain region in the north is the perfect escape. Reaching elevations of over 6,500 feet, this rugged landscape offers untouched nature, dense forests of chestnut, oak, and pine, and a scattering of hidden mountain villages waiting to be explored.

It’s a dream destination for hiking, but there’s more than just trails to discover. Explore the Grotta del Vento, an underground cave system that stretches nearly 3 miles, or take in the dramatic architecture of the Ponte della Maddalena, a centuries-old stone arch bridge that looks like something out of a storybook.

Island of Elba

Sant'Andrea on Elba (Tuscan Archipelago, Italy)

A visit to the beach should not be missed, especially during a summer vacation in Tuscany. So grab a towel and a pair of sunglasses and make your way to the beautiful island of Elba. Whether in lively Portoferraio or relaxed Rio Marina, the small island captivates with its unmistakable flair and dream beaches. Nevertheless, a visit to Elba is not just for swimming, snorkeling or soaking up the sun. Instead, you can also go on unforgettable hikes and bike rides, visit museums or explore the historic port of the island's capital.

Antiques Market in Arezzo

The Piazza Grande in Arezzo, Tuscany

If you want to combine culture, history and excellent gastronomy , you should head to Arezzo. The enchanting town near Siena is still considered an insider tip among Italy fans. However, the medieval charm, the beautiful patrician houses in the historic city center, first-class studios and galleries as well as the fantastic antiques market, which takes place once a month in the Piazza Grande, are already attracting a steady stream of visitors. Last but not least, you can enjoy first-class food in Arezzo and enjoy some Italian delicacies against the fantastic backdrop of the city!
